Recruits on Day 3 of 2017 Winter Nationals (Prelims):

Full Recap: https://swimswam.com/u-s-winter-nationals-day-3-prelims-live-recap/

400 IM:
- Claire Tuggle (2022): 4:18.27, 10T

None of our 2019 recruits swam this, but great swim from Claire!

100 fly:
- Alexa Cuomo (2019, #32 Nat, #4 VA): 52.89, 6th
- Phoebe Bacon (2020, #7 Nat, #2 VA): 53.94, 10T
- Olivia Bray (2020, #4 Nat, #1 VA): 54.03, 12th
- Victoria (Torri) Huske (2021): 54.10, 14th
- Lauryn Johnson (2019, #80 Nat, #3 NY): 55.39, 24th
- Whittney Hamilton (2019, #74 Nat, #6 VA): 55.69, 28th

Solid performances.

200 free:
- Isabel Ivey (2019, #2 Nat, #1 FL): 1:44.75, 2nd
- Miranda Heckman (2019, #10 Nat, #2 CA): 1:46.95, 8th
- Caroline Kulp (2019, #18 Nat, #2 VA): 1:48.67, 18th
- Madelyn Donohoe (2019, #6 Nat, #1 VA): 1:48.94, 20th
- Johanna Jorgenson (2020, #43 Nat, #3 MI): 1:49.06, 21st
- Claire Tuggle (2022): 1:49.44, 23rd

Good swim for Isabel, second only behind Comerford. Miranda Heckman also gets into the final with a new PB.

100 breast:
- Anna Keating (2020, #36 Nat, #4 VA): 1:01.87, 16th
- Jordan Morgan (2021/2022?): 1:01.21, 12th

2 second drop from Jordan Morgan, who swims for Santa Clara Swim Club (someone on our team has probably come from there, anyone know who?), 2021 or 2022 prospect.

100 back:
- Isabel Ivey (2019, #2 Nat, #1 FL): 52.27, 1st
- Phoebe Bacon (2020, #7 Nat, #2 VA): 52.79, 4th
- Olivia Bray (2020, #4 Nat, #1 VA): 53.86, 10th

Dang, Ivey really stepping up her back game, and I really cannot tell what her second best stroke is after freestyle. So very versatile, and split faster than Olympian Olivia Smoliga on the second 50 (27.00 vs. 27.24)! Nice 0.1 drop from Phoebe as well.

Not sure why CS has her ranked under Virginia, but I'm pretty sure she lives in MD and trains with Bruce Gemmell at the MD NCAP sites. Also, she attends Ledecky's alma matter, Stone Ridge, which is in Maryland.

Phoebe lives in Herndon, VA, right by Dulles Airport. Healthy daily commute to Bethesda. Gemmell coached Ledecky and his son swam at Georgia. I'd give the edge to LSJU or Georgia over Cal for Phoebe.

That's a significant PB for Izzie! Former best was a 53.83 from Florida States back in Feb 2017...

Makes sense, and I agree w/ her going to LSJU (why Georgia, though?) b/c of Ledecky's influence. However, fellow NCAP swimmers Seliskar and Cassidy are both going to Cal, plus Cal is known for its influence, so she'd probably consider it, at the very least. However, if LSJU is going after Regan, they may not need her in backstroke on relays...idk

- Claire Tuggle (2022): 1:49.64, 24th

Great swim by Ivey, only a tenth off her best.

100 breast:
- Jordan Morgan (2021/2022): 1:01.41, 14th
- Anna Keating (2020, #36 Nat, #4 VA): 1:01.42, 15th

- Alexa Cuomo (2019, #32 Nat, #4 VA): 51.10, 30th
- Claire Tuggle (2022): 51.52, 31st

Izzie putting herself in a good position for tonight's finals. I think that many of the swimmers are tired tonight, which may be the reason for the times that aren't as fast as previous days.

200 breast:
- Laura Goettler (2020, #47 Nat, #5 PA): 2:13.88, 15th
- Anna Keating (2020, #36 Nat, #4 VA): 2:14.70, 18th

Just looked at potential 2019/2020 recruits, and there are some from the state of Texas that I don't believe have been discussed on here yet, but could make an impact on recruiting (may or may not be biased because I am a Texan ):

2019:
Kaitlynn Sims (#1 TX): Distance freestyler, club teammates with 2018 furd Lucie...
Lindsay Looney (#2 Tx): 2017 National Junior Team, flyer/IMer
Ashlyn Fiorilli (#3 TX): 2017 World Junior Team member, flyer
Emma Wheal (#4 TX): high school teammate of Georgia signee Dakota Luther, sprint freestyle, back, fly
Ella Collins (#5): trains club with Dakota Luther, big time sprinter

2020:
Lillie Nordmann (Lucie's sister, #1 TX): Big time flyer, solid relay freestyler
Emma Sticklen (#5 TX): Same with Lillie, extends ranges into backstroke and IM, sprinter (has also had huge improvement curve in almost every single event)
Carson Kaufmann (#3 TX): Distance freestyle

Others in the 2020 class aren't as strong as the three aforementioned, but overall, in the future, these should be names that we can all also keep an eye on as we roll into the next several recruiting cycles.

Lillie & Ashlyn have both received mentions on this board (if perhaps only briefly), and I've heard of Lindsay, but the other names are def. new to me...appreciate the heads up!

Anyway several of the promising recruits discussed on these pages will be competing at 2017 Speedo Winter Junior Championships starting Wed, so no time to relax before the next wave of SCY swimming commences (not that we're complaining too vocally mind you hehe).

In fact a slew of 2018 recruits will be participating as well, including Baby Bear Elise Garcia.

Some notable splits on first night of relays at the Winter Junior Championships.

------

14-YEAR OLD GRETCHEN WALSH BLASTS 21.01 RELAY SPLIT AT EASTS-DAY 1

------

2017 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS WEST (LIVE RECAP)

------

Not sure if Gretchen's truly astonishing 21.01 anchor split on that 200 Medley relay is 100% accurate if you look at the recorded time for her clubmate's fly leg (a relatively pedestrian 25.75), but the only faster split in this event at last year's NCAAs (from a flying start) was Farida's 20.91 anchor leg! Extremely swift regardless of age or level!! The younger Walsh sibling also contributed a decent 1:46.17 leg on her 800 Free relay.

Alex had a great back leadoff on this relay (24.17 - compare that to Amy's 24.14 from the UGA Fall Invite). Then went on to anchor NAC's winning longer relay in 1:44.15...faster than Abbey & Robin's splits over the weekend, not far off Amy's 1:43.97...also handily beats 2018 sapling Morgan's 1:45.90 effort here.

Kate D had the quickest fly split in the A final, a 23.69.

Caitlin Brooks led off with a nice 24.87 on back, with her Gator Swim Club teammate Talia Bates contributing a swift 23.75 on fly.

Lillie Nordmann (1:45.19) did really well over at the West meet. Zoie Hartman fared better in her 200 Free split (1:46.12) than her 50 Breast split (29.92).

Oh and someone please feel welcome to fill in the details of all the other noteworthy swims that I haven't mentioned here...

ALEX WALSH STEALING THE SHOW AT SPEEDO WINTER JUNIORS EAST

A bit of a disclaimer first on the seemingly lopsided (but well-deserved) praise for the Walshes here haha...was cognisant that there were tons of outstanding performances & PRs accomplished by several other promising 2019-2022 recruits on our radar, but I'm focussing on the headline grabbers for now

For a more balanced perspective, please refer to this writeup:
THE TOP 8 IN EACH EVENT FROM DAY 3 OF 2017 WINTER JUNIORS COMBINED

Incidentally, Alex's tough winning double* tonight, a 58.19 PB in the 100 Breast followed swiftly by a 51.45 PB in the 100 Back, would have been good for #3 & #12 respectively @ 2017 NCAAs!

In celebration of the Walsh sisters' record-breaking performances thus far (with one more day of racing to go), here's a throwback to an old post from 2016 that hopefully will come to pass (er, even if Alex was erroneously reckoned to be possibly in the 2019 class there lol):

UrsusArctosCalifornicus said:

Alex Walsh (2019 recruit?) is a big Missy fan, so a pretty good chance that the older Walsh sister would seriously consider Cal - if Teri's interested in recruiting her...along with Penny (in tedbear's wildest fantasy :p) and perhaps Kate Douglass (also looks up to Missy) in that recruiting class... but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves quite yet lol

However, it seems as though Ivey is really good friends with Cassidy, which always ups our chances.

Took a good look at Isabel Ivey's insta, and she's following both our men and women's account (a good sign) and the Gators (no dip; she swims for their club team IMO); also following Missy and some of the NJT men who are freshmen at Cal this year.

As of right now, we have no indication that she's leaning toward Stanford, and UF is our only real competition as she is based out of the Gator Swim Club in Gainesville.

Hmmm, reckon we need to add the Horns to Izzie's shopping list now...

Still, pretty confident that Bears presently remain as one of the frontrunners vying for Izzy's favour

As always, I'd urge a spot of caution with regards to "taking things at their face value" when it comes to social media...

Certainly these posts can be a valuable source for ascertaining a recruit's potential collegiate leanings at a particular point in time, and definitely a useful tool for tracking their official & unofficial visits - but IMHO shouldn't really be relied upon as the sole indicator of things to come, but rather just one of various data points & pieces when trying to figure out the puzzle & overall picture...

HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA AFFECT COLLEGE RECRUITING?

swimmer19

Has anyone been aware that 2020 recruit Ella Ristic switched from MVN to Nova this past season? According to results at Juniors West, it now shows that she's representing Nova now.

I don't believe that it should affect our recruiting, though, because current sophomore Courtney was also based out of that club.

2017 WINTER JUNIORS EAST: DAY 4 FINALS LIVE RECAP

Wow, Alex busted out yet another PB of 1:51.42 in winning the 200 Back (old PR = 1:52.07, from the 2015 edition of this meet).

Regan has been a bit faster in this, her speciality, event - 1:51.30, from the USA College Challenge back in Oct.

Their times are 2018 NCAA 'A' cuts, would have placed 2nd in the B final @ 2017 NCAAs, ahead of Claire Adams' 1:51.50.

But "only" ranked #6 Cal all-time if the duo were to become Baby Bears right now, such are the exalted standards of "Backstroke U" haha:

1. Elizabeth Pelton ...........1:47.84.......2013
2. Missy Franklin .............1:47.91.......2015
3. Kathleen Baker .............1:48.33.......2017
4. Natalie Coughlin ...........1:49.52.......2002
5. Amy Bilquist ...............1:49.90.......2016

6. Melanie Klaren .............1:51.83.......2015

Both Reese and Cassidy are at the 2017 NCAP Invite, as well as 2019 recruit Katelyn Mack and 2020 recruit Phoebe Bacon, as well as the Grace and Caroline Sheble of NOVA (2021 recruits?)

Day 2:
https://swimswam.com/14yo-grace-sheble-blasts-409-00-400im-ncap-invite-day-2/
"Amongst an impressive field, 14-year-old Grace Sheble put up a historic performance in the girls' 400IM on Friday at the 2017 NCAP Invitational. She split 57.09/1:04.68/1:09.91/57.32 for a final time of 4:09.00. She now is the second fastest 13-14 swimmer ever in the event, with Katie Hoff being the only girl to ever go under 4:09. Meghan Lynch took second in a still-quick 4:16.24, followed by Caroline Sheble in 4:24.75."

"Phoebe Bacon, 15, won the open girls' 100 fly in 53.26, followed by 18-year-old Cassidy Bayer in 53.55. Also under 54 was 15-year-old Abby Harter in 53.75. Reece Whitley topped the boys' race in 48.26, followed by Steven Thalblum in 48.53, and Philip Manoff in 48.73."

Day 3:

"NCAP swimmer, U.S. National Teamer, and Cal commit Cassidy Bayer picked up her first win of the 2017 NCAP Invitational with a 1:56.08. That's her best time in over 18 months. Bayer opened in a 54.43, and then split 1:01.65 on the back-half: a bit of a fade by her standards, implying that this probably isn't a taper meet for her."

"Durocher's first win of the day came in the 200 fly, where he put in a 1:46.18 for his first victory of the meet. Not far behind him was Whitley in 1:46.42 his best time in the event by more than two seconds. Whitley has been known as a breaststroker for most of his career, but this season he's shown monstrous improvements in the IM and especially butterfly events. In the last 3 months alone, he's gone best times in the 200 IM (1:43.55), 400 IM (3:44.71), 100 fly (48.23), 200 fly, 200 free (1:38.20), and has generally multiplied his value for Cal next season.

All of that comes while not losing a step in his breaststroke: he swam best times of 51.81 and 1:51.43 in the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes at last weekend's US Winter Nationals as well."

Durocher is a UGA commit for 2018.

Recently noticed that there seemed to be a pretty big shift in ranking numbers on CS for our 2019 recruits, so I decided to do a breakdown of the swimmers through rank #25. For the freestylers, I broke it down into sprinters, mid-distance, and distance because if the ranges. If they're a 500 freestyler, I placed them in mid-distance if their 200 is better than their 1650, and vice versa. Also I'm not including international swimmers, sorry! I'm procrastinating on real work lol

Some quick notes:
- Florida (4), California (5), Virginia (3), Texas (3) have the most depth, with California having their #5 swimmer still being top 25 nationally.
- Not that many sprinters, but a considerable amount of distance swimmers
- Backstrokers in this class (Berkoff, Brooks) have high improvement curves from when I last went over backstrokers (both dropped time at Juniors)
- Lots of flyers, though none of the caliber of the fly-heavy 2018 class

2019 recruits - a breakdown
All-Around:

Isabel Ivey (#1 Nat, #1 FL) - Gator Swim Club
- esp. good at 100-200 free & 2IM, strong back, breast, fly

Chloe Clark (#17 Nat, #3 CA) - Sierra Marlins Swim Team
- great IMs, great 100 back and free, 1:02 breast; only "weakness" is fly (55 sec 100 fly)

Sprint Free (50-100):
https://instagr.am/p/BYE-TXmA91h(right)
Kate Douglass (#4 Nat, #1 NY) - Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club
- great 50/100, some back/breast/IM as well

Katie Mack (#22 Nat, #3 VA) - Nation's Capital Swim Club
- great 50, solid 100/200 free, strong backstroker (53/1:56) & 100 flyer (54), solid IMs, esp. 400 IM (4:17, which is impressive, esp. for a sprinter)
- imo, she should be ranked higher b/c of the lack of sprinters in this class, plus her versatility of sprints

Mid-Distance Free (200-500):

Miranda Heckman (#11 Nat, #2 CA) - Pleasanton Seahawks
- great 200 and 500, her 1650 is solid

(left)
Caroline Kulp (#19 Nat, #2 VA) - Virginia Gators
- didn't know where to put her, but the mid-distance events seem like her strongest
- great 200/500, solid 1650, 200 fly & 400 IM, but intriginely, split 28.8 on the breaststroke portion of a NAG winning 200 medley relay (1:05 100 breast)

Distance Free (500-1650):
https://instagr.am/p/BcORPsCDahU (left)
Madelyn Donohoe (#6 Nat, #1 VA) - The Fish
- mostly just 500-1650, solid 200

(middle)
Kaitlynn Simms (#7 Nat, #1 TX) - Magnolia Aquatic Club
- same as Donohoe, slightly slower 1650, good 400 IM

Back:

Caitlin Brooks (#8 Nat, #2 FL) - Gator Swim Club
- really soared up in rankings (she was #20 at the end of Nov.)
- really just a backstroker, but her improvement curve has been very high

Katharine Berkoff (#9 Nat, #1 MT) - Missoula Aquatic Club
- performed really well @ Juniors West this weekend
- sub 52 100 back + 1:52 200 back

Alexandra Crisera (#21 Nat, #4 CA) - Southern California Swimming
- great 100 back & solid 200 back/free

Ayla Spitz (#25 Nat, #5 CA) - Irvine NovaAquatics
- solid backstroke (53/1:57), sub 2 minute 200 IM, solid 100/200 frees

Breast:

Zoie Hartman (#5 Nat, #1 CA) - Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks
- also good 50 free & solid 100/200 free
- sub 2:09 in 200 breast! (2:08)

Emily Weiss (#12 Nat, #1 IN) - Cardinal Community Swim Club *VERBALLY COMMITTED TO INDIANA*
- less range than Hartman, but incredible 100 (58.7)

https://instagr.am/p/BciWiVIFFXX (left)
Ashley McCauley (#23 Nat, #1 NC) - Marlins of Raleigh
- sub 2:10 breaststroker, 1:01 100 breaststroker, solid 400 IM

Fly:

Coleen Gillian (#10 Nat, #1 CO) - Fort Collins Area Swim Team
- putting her here b/c I have no idea where to put her & she swam fly on her team's medley relay lol
- projects as great breastrokers (1:00.4) and flyer (53.0); solid IMs as well

Mary Smutny (#15 Nat, #3 FL) - AquaKids Sharks Swim Team
- best all-around flyer in this class, solid 100/200/500 frees as well

Lindsey Looney (#16 Nat, #2 TX) - Metroplex Aquatics
- slightly slower 100/200 fly than Smutny, a solid 400 IM

Ashlyn Fiorilli (#18 Nat, #3 TX) - Texas Ford Aquatics
- 54/1:57 flyer, great distance free & 400 IM (basically one of those 200yd + swimmers)

(right)
Sarah DiMeco (#20 Nat, #1 WA) - Issaquah Swim Team
- 55/1:57 flyer, solid distance free

IM:

(right)
Ella Nelson (#13 Nat, #1 TN) - Nashville Aquatic Club
- also a sub 2:10 breaststroker, but better all-around IMer

Kelly Pash (#14 Nat, #2 IN) - Carmel Swim Club
- slightly faster than Nelson in both IMs, but also has solid 50/100/200 frees

Kathleen Golding (#24 Nat, #4 FL) - South Florida Aquatic Club
- 1:59/4:14 IMer, solid 100 fly (54) & 100/200/500 frees

Crikey, bearz012, what an massively smashing piece of research that's clearly presented! Really liking your categorisations and the pictorial style quite a bit

Will have to take some time to read up on all the details of your recommendations - but what is now obvious is that from now on, you're clearly the frontrunner, nay the only logical, nominee to start up the 2019 recruiting thread lol

btw most of us will be quite chuffed by someone being brill enough to finally stop someone like me from denudating this supposedly "2018 recruits" topic with off-topic 2019 & 2020 chatter

Well done again, bearz012...do look very much forward to all the scintillating 2019 conversations to come - elsewhere

Berkeley pros, Murphy, Prenot, Pebley, Shields, Vollmer, and Adrian, as well as Zheng Quah (any reason why?) are on the psych sheet as well. Lots of college teams as well (A&M, NC State, Texas, Louisville), pros (Georgia, Texas, Arizona) and international swimmers (Canada, China, Great Britain) will be there as well. Looking to be a stacked event and we'll see how the Swim Squads work.

I found some information regarding the one uncommitted recruit we are waiting for word on: Sarah Grinalds.

Grinalds, Ludlowe swim past Warde

"Warde is always an awesome meet, there's so much competition," said Grinalds, who has visited Texas, Virginia, Florida, Harvard and Princeton and expects to make her college choice within the next month. "The energy was great today. The place was shaking. I am upset that I missed so much time, but now that I'm back, I feel like I almost never left. Everyone's been great to have me back swimming again."

This article was posted on Oct. 26th, 2017.

Well, it looks like she won't be expected here at Cal (unless something magical happens).

Note: That 1:46.92 in the 200 Free was a personal best for our baby Bear! Cass' prev PB was a 1:47.63 from the 2017 NCAP Invite last Dec.

Bayer's 53.07 represents her 4th best 100 Fly lifetime. PR remains 52.78 from the 2015 edition of the NCAP Invite.

Cassidy had also contributed the fastest split (23.25) of her squad on the 200 Free relay.
