KV = 2

Several swim websites will publish analyses of returning points in the coming days and Bears will be in good shape relative to everyone but that big ass Taco Bell. Even with a relay DQ, 70+ points is a big cushion over A&M. Farida will be a big loss, but even her relay legs can be replaced.

A&M, Texas, Georgia, and 'SC are talented, but they're not overtaking the Bears. Meehan's a great guy/coach, but he readily acknowledges with no Lia Neal, they probably don't get Manuel and Ledecky. Neal did take an official visit to Cal.

This once proud program has hit run bottom. Didn't one time Bear Sophia Batchelor transfer there? Their guys (Dressel, Rooney, & etc) should do much better. They did come in 2nd in the SEC.

I realize that the seven swimmers coming in the next recruit class will not be able to replace the four seniors graduating... Can someone provide reasonable expectations for the newbies for next season? I did notice that four of 'em (Dannie
Dilsaver, Ali Harrison, Natalie Tuck & Alexa Skorus-Neely) specialize in the breast stroke. The other three are Robin Neumann, Elizabeth Bailey & Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou. Which ones might fill some holes and have some impact?

I also believe that I saw mention of another new swimmer being added to the team: was it a transfer, someone out due to academics or a walk-on. Does anyone know to whom I refer or maybe i'm getting senile. I'll turn age 68 this month. thank you all

Maddie Murphy vs. the Swimswam top 10 high school recruits.

Maddie 20 + 1st place relay
1. Meghan Small 18
2. Beata Nelson 0
3. Becca Mann 2
4. Stanzi Moesley 0
5. Claire Adams 20
6. Katie Drabot 3
7. Veronica Burchill 4
8. Allie Szekely 6
9. Grace Ogelsby 2
10. Lindsey Horejsi 23
14. Megan Byrnes 25

Hmmm, so the actual winner is distance swimmer Megan Byrnes of the Furd. I still think that Claire Adams has huge potential, and I would include Meghan Small in that group too.

Thanks tedbear for compiling those stats, v. interesting...

Does reinforce what we've been commenting here for quite some time bout Madds having been grossly under-rated at the time!

To be fair, Maddie's development did undergo a bit of an impressive surge in her HS senior year, at the North Coast Section finals in May of 2016 (i.e. after SwimSwam's Top 20 list was published), where she broke the NCS record in the 50 free, 100 fly, 100 free (relay leadoff), and 200 free relay in the anchor spot.

CIF-NCS Championships Saturday Finals

50 Free 1. Maddie Murphy (Carondelet) 22.49*
100 Fly 1. Maddie Murphy (Carondelet) 52.15*

200 Free Relay 1. Carondelet 1:33.28* (Maddie Murphy 21.99 anchor)
400 Free Relay 1. Carondelet 3:23.79 (Maddie Murphy 48.62* leadoff)

* = NCS Record!

http://cifncs.org/sports/swimming_&_diving/files/swimming%20records.pdf

Side note: Maddie's times today are all PBs (had never broken the 50 sec barrier in the 100 free previously?) , and would have ranked her 5th fastest in the 50 free, 100 free & 100 fly amongst the women's team last season.

https://admin.xosn.com/attachments1/535435.pdf

But it was really as a Golden Bear that froski Murphy's times really took off this season, culminating in her studly scoring prowess, not to mention invaluable contribution to the team @ NCAAs last week

Now aren't we all glad that instead of either of these 2 recruiting scenarios:

Have already discussed Moriah (Pleasanton Seahawks) & Chenoa (Davis), but another low-risk, high-upside local that tedbear had included in his OP post is Maddie Murphy from Orinda (Crow Canyon Sharks), whose sprint free & fly prowess would always come in handy with some more development.

For reference, here's a list of how the very best of the 2016 freshie class fared @ 2017 NCAAs for the various schools - only A finals scorers in individual events considered here:

Way to go Amy!!!! Let's work on those underwaters though.

tedbear;842822111 said:

Interesting to hear both Thleen and Katie both say that they are better at long course, which is probably also true for Abbey and Amy. If Amy had Thleen's underwaters and turns, I think she would be the one of the premier backstrokers in the world. We are talking Katina Hosszu good! Amy also got PBs in both her 50 and 100 frees.

TBH, I've never reckoned Amy's underwaters to be that deficient in the past. True, not at the Natalie/Cindy/Bootsie/Lizzie level, or at Janet Hu/Ally Howe's (partly the reason why that furdette pair fares much better in the little pool than in long course), but Bilquist hasn't to my observation been all that competitively handicapped in that department up until this year's Pac-12s & NCAAs.

Hmmm, wonder if it has anything to do with her ongoing stress fracture health issue as Amy has been seen sporting OBear's fave boot at duals this season and also @ Pac-12s? That would def have a significant impact on how much force can be safely applied when pushing off the walls, and would affect the backstroke races more than the freestyle ones where Amy has been having much better results.

As we have seen with Farida, you don't need to have the world's best or longest/deepest underwaters in the sprint frees...the breakout and how quickly one can get up to speed after each wall is just as important, esp in SCY where there's less than half the distance between walls...

NCAA D1 WOMEN TIME CHANGE VS SEED AT NATIONALS

As expected from the points change data, the best performing teams were Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas A&M. None of the other top schools dropped time on average. Stanford added .31%, California added .3%, Georgia added .2%, and Texas added .16%. The worst performing big teams were both from Los Angeles. USC added an average of 1.33% and UCLA added 1.23%. The field as a whole added time in line with the historical average.

California | Li, Celina | 400 Individual Medley | +3.34% | 4:06.76 | 4:15.00

Thanks for the analysis, tedbear.

Off that list, originally thought Stanzi would be a star with upside and that Mann would have helped Cal the most (500/1650, 400 IM, 800 Free). Bakersfield is hardly Egypt, but thought Stanzi would benefit from a coaching/facility upgrade similar to Farida.

Maddie's a star and could swim 4 relays and score in 3 events for the Bears. Adams and Small can also score individually and contribute on relays.

Brynes can score individually, but not contribute on relays. Will be interesting to look at the scoring break down by class among the top ten teams. Bears have strong rising juniors and sophs. Furdettes don't have enough sprint and stroke depth in the pipeline below their rising senior class.

Valerie Hull of Cal went with a sparkly California gold.

Cal's Kristin Vreldeveld went with a less-sparkly, shinier gold to represent the Bears.

Abbey Weitzeil of Cal went with a silver that matched her cap.

And, to our eyes, Cal's Katie McLaughlin won the nail game with a classy two-tone black and silver.

Nine Bears Named All-Americans

Cal won six events at the NCAA Championships, including the 200 free relay (Tim Binning photo).

Coming off a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships that included six event titles this past week, nine Golden Bears have been named All-Americans by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.

Eight Cal swimmers were chosen to the first team based on placing among the top eight in either relay or individual race. The list features:

Kathleen Baker
Amy Bilquist
Katie McLaughlin
Maddie Murphy
Farida Osman
Noemie Thomas
Kristen Vredeveld
Abbey Weitzeil

In addition, Marina Garcia was selected honorable mention for her 12th-place showing in the 200 breaststroke.

Baker was elected as the CSCAA Swimmer of the Year following victories in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100 backstroke and the 200 back, becoming the third Bear to win three races at one NCAA meet. She is the sixth Cal swimmer to be so honored, following Natalie Coughlin (2001, '02, '03), Dana Vollmer (2009), Caitlin Leverenz (2012), Elizabeth Pelton (2013) and Missy Franklin (2015).

In addition to Baker, other Cal event winners were Osman in the 100 butterfly, the 200 free relay (Weitzeil, Murphy, Bilquist and Osman) and the 200 medley relay (Baker, Weitzeil, Thomas and Osman).

It might not have been a great season in terms of winning a team title, but the Bears won 4 individual titles and 2 relay titles (with a potential 3rd if not for the DQ). That would be fine in most years if many more swimmers had scored. Still, I think many hit personal bests at this meet. (Maybe UAC can update the previous list....)

Have me hands really full this morning, but will do my best to try putting up some sort of Personal Best-by-Event list later...likely not until after the Men's 800 Free Relay has concluded this afternoon! :p

I feel that Farida's loss will be quite a significant one unfortunately. Osman's such a modest unsung hero and always been massively underappreciated for all her contributions to the team. Not only for her sprint prowess in her individuals, but for Farida's invaluable relay value where her speed & versatility enables a breadth of options for Teri & co.

The room to manoeuvre in terms of the Bears' relay lineups will be noticeably curtailed in our Egyptian princess' absence - for example, can we afford to keep Abbey on breast in the shorter Medley relay next year if no one else can step up to deliver a studly free anchor leg? How about the 400 Medley Relay which is further complicated with Marina out of the picture? Put Amy on back, Thleen on breast, Noemie on fly, and Abbey on free perhaps??

Don't really see any of the incoming froskis having a realistic shot of helping out on the relays, at least in their freshie year...other than possibly Robin on the 800 Free relay, if she's able to adapt to the short course format quickly and works on her walls, not to mention adjusting to new teammates, coaching & school environments, and a new country to boot...rather big ifs TBH!

Despite their big loss in the case of Lia Neal, the furdette juggernaut is so overstocked with studs in all but one area (breast) and reaping the fruits of yet another #1 recruiting class (by far) that I'm afraid they may dominate to a greater degree next season. To think that the IMs & Distance which were big holes down at the Farm just a short while ago have now become one of the Card's deepest strengths!

At least LSJU didn't succeed in recruiting an elite sprint breaststroker like Mags or Nikol! Fortunately for us, Grace Zhao, whilst undeniably one of the best breast recruits (of a relatively weak class), doesn't appear to represent a significant upgrade over Kim Williams without further development.

Our best shot at a title will prob. come the following year, as Stanfurd will say buh bye to Janet Hu & Ally Howe amongst other key players then. Already well-known for their being top-end stroke specialists, this elite furdette duo has been even more indispensable in terms of the versatility they bring to 4 of the 5 Cardinal relays, thanks to their mean Free sprinting ability and interchangeable skills in the Back & Fly.

However reckon we will have much more to lose the next year after then, with the original Dream Team all graduating other than Abbey.

So it's really critical that we turn the recruiting around ASAP and build a killer cadre which is commensurate with the premier standards/reputation & rich history/tradition of the school, starting with the 2018 prospects!

Already known is Meehan vigorously pursuing the cream of that crop (Taylor Ruck, Grace Ariola, Elise Garcia, Anya Goeders, Sam Shelton, etc.):

... with Salo vying for Eva Merrell, Cassidy Bayer, Sam Shelton & Swedish Olympian Sophie Hansson, amongst others, for his Trojanettes.

We'll need to counter all of that by working hard on Eva, Taylor, Zoe, Lucie, Dakota, Morgan, Amalie, Julia...also Madison Homovich or Erica Sullivan, Grace Countie, Izzi Henig, Ema Rajic, Halladay Kinsey, Jessica Epps or Mikki Thompson, MSH (as per tedbear's Canuck scouting hehe) and the rest of the crew...perhaps even go for an international studette of our own like Norway's Marte Lvberg...

Well as promised, here's a rough list of Personal Bests done by our women that had achieved (or got fairly close to) a 2017 NCAA 'B' cut, measured against hypothetical qualification & scoring potential at this year's very fast edition of the NCAA Div I Championships if these lifetime bests had actually been swum in last week's finals. Excluded our seniors (Farida, KV, Marina, Celina) as we are looking ahead to next year with this list.

Putting this together was a bit of a headache as it involved manually looking up times for each entry, hence I didn't research every single swim & event for each of our Golden Bears, i.e. this is an incomplete data set at best!

Did relax the 'B' cut inclusion criteria considerably for the incoming frosh class... Note that several of these Baby Bears have yet to participate in their rested SCY meet for this season (in particular the in-state recruits since the CA sectionals & State Champs equiv. aren't typically scheduled until May), so may improve their times further once these championship meets have taken place. Also seem to recall that Dannie didn't race her HS states this year, not certain if it was an injury-related issue or something else...

UPDATE: Threw in the furdette juggernaut's #1 ranked 2017 recruiting class, so that we can better assess the events & areas where they could widen the gap on us, or conversely lose a bit of ground, @ 2018 NCAAs...

That is a lot of work! Thanks UAC!

Yup Microbear85, you are correct. And that is why 2018 recruiting is so crucial. Our next big window to win a Natty is when Dream Team are seniors and the future Class of 2018 are frosh.

Good stuff, UAC-thanks!

Only quibble I have is 2018 relays. With the Dream Team, Noemie, Maddie, and Robin, Teri still will have more than enough depth to be top three in all five relays with legs to spare.

Only questions are breast legs on the medleys. Choose from Abbey, KB, Maija, Keaton, or Ali. Latter three have work to do, but ideally one of them would emerge. Abbey and KB are more devastating on other medley legs.

Assuming reasonable adjustment to SCYs, Robin can contribute on the 800 and 400 Free relays as a froskie. 200 Free Relay is not out of the question, but more than a little depth there.

Chenoa's already ahead of schedule as an NCAA qualifier, but fully expect her to score individually and potentially swim an 800 leg sooner rather than later.

Went ahead and added some PBs for the 2017 furdette recruits to the list in the preceding posts. As a (painful :p) reminder, this was the 2nd #1 class in a row for our arch-rivals down on the Farm, boasting four of SwimSwam's Top 10 + one in their Top 20 ranking. Meehan had also poached Grace, Ashley & Katie G (the trio had made official trips to Cal prior to committing to LSJU :cry.

At any rate, the inclusion of these incoming in the "best times" lists above should help make it easier to compare their in-the-pool strengths & weaknesses relative to our incoming baby :bear:s and get a firmer handle on what to expect for the 2017-2018 swimming season.

Natalie Tuck, Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou, Ali Harrison

At a quick glance, a number of the 2017 saplings thankfully haven't managed to hit any new Personal Best times this season as yet (Ashley Volpenhein, Lauren Pitzer, Katie Glavinovich who is now rated @ #96 compared to her prev #64 spot).

However, Grace Zhao & Lauren Green have made steady improvements... Indeed, Zhao's 2:09.21 from Dec would have scored in the 200 Breast B final @ 2017 NCAAs!

Hannah Kukurugya with some nice drops in several of her events (100 Fly, 200 & 400 IM) hence her collegeswimming ranking having shot up from last year's #21 to its current #12 slot.

Hannah Kukurugya, Brooke Forde, Ashley Volpenhein

Most impressive (alarming for us lol) is Brooke Forde busting out PBs left & right in almost every one of her events as of late (and Yahoo Pat's daughter can swim fast in a whole bunch of events to boot!). At the present count, her lifetime best times would have scored in the A final of this year's NCAAs (200 IM, 400 IM), B final (500 Free, 200 Free, 200 Breast), not to mention also earning an invite in the 200 Fly! Brooke is now ranked the #1 recruit of her class by collegeswimming.
#1: Stanford Cardinal

It appears to me that the men's team with the 8 new recruits will have less weaknesses and more depth heading into next season than the women's team. After the departure of Ryan Murphy, the men would seem to have less stars than the women's team, too. The women's team appears to have had two subpar recruit classes back-to-back (7 new swimmers enter in the fall) and must rely for most of their points from their fab four (Kathleen Baker, Abbey Weitzeil, Amy Bilquist & Katie McLaughlin)...Both Cal teams finished second in NCAAs so it will interesting to see if they can sustain their high levels of respective performance going forward... Did anyone provide an evaluation of the women's incoming recruit class like that provided for the men's new class? GO BEARS!

Well, we'll have to wait until late June or thereabouts for SwimSwam's comprehensive "2017 Women’s NCAA Recruiting Classes" rankings.

The following is just my quick take based on the "NCAA scoring potential according to PBs" charts several posts back on this thread. Hopefully the experts here will chime in with their expert observations & analyses for a better in-depth evaluation...

To put it bluntly without any sugar-coating, it would appear that our incoming domestic baby :bear:s won't likely emerge as NCAA scorers in their freshie year :bawl: (would be very happy to be proven wrong in this regard tho!)

Now Robin does represent our best scoring chance out of all the frosh, albeit we should be cognisant that our international may be a bit of a wild card when it comes to SCY (with Marina's & Yvette's collegiate careers in mind!).

Mainly in the 200 Free, and possibly the 100 Free - * if * our Dutch Olympian is able to make the transition quickly to the little pool plus to a new training environment & coaches/teammates, and at the same time to adjust smoothly to the challenges of the classroom @ Cal and to living in the US in general. Neumann should also provide Teri & Ian with more options in the free relays.

IMO Sophie may at least get a chance to qualify for NCs in the 100 Back if she ends up developing ahead of schedule, maybe additionally in the 100 Fly after working with the likes of Noemie, Maddie & Katie... But Krivokapic-Zhou isn't realistically projected as a scorer in her debut season.

Our glaring holes in distance (Chenoa will remain as Bears' only serious candidate), longer IM (zero NCAA qualifiers) and both breast events at the championship level won't apparently be mitigated by the incoming class...

OTOH, baby furdettes are anticpated to secure NCAA scoring positions in their freshman year in multiple events:
200 IM (Forde)
400 IM (Forde)
200 Breast (Forde & Zhao).
Also in the 500 Free & 200 Free if their #1 recruit takes on these events instead of her expected races.

Not to mention a possibility of earning NCAA invites in these:
500 Free (Pitzer)
200 IM (Kuks, maybe Zhao)
50 Free (Volpenhein, Pitzer, Green, perhaps even Zhao)
400 IM (Kuks potentially)
100 Fly (Green, Kuks, Forde)
200 Free (Pitzer)
100 Breast (Zhao)
100 Free (Pitzer, Volpenhein)
200 Fly (Kuks, Forde)
These 2017 saplings will also deliver some depth to their 50 & 100 Free sprints at the conference & dual level, which will be helpful to Meehan & Tracy with Lia Neal's departure and with Hu & Howe typically better utilised in the Back & Fly individuals. LSJU's 100 fly, breasts, 200 free will also be bolstered in terms of mid-level depth.

The 100 & 200 backstroke is one area where our latest bear cub commits should reign over the mini s, since Sophie > Glavinovich according to current stats. Looking like no sprint breast upgrades down on the Farm either, so Bears will have a chance against the furdette juggernaut next year in the medley relays, assuming the void left by Farida's graduation will be filled by somebody.

At any rate, this thread may serve as a (painful for some :p) reminder of our (somewhat tumultuous lol) rollercoaster ride for the 2017 recruiting year:

Oh, not to forget the 2016 recruiting year...groan  (which actually turned out much stronger than originally rated for our :bear:s, showcased by Madds' studly ascendency, nicely backed by Chenoa's encouraging development and Keaton's solid contributions)

2017 W. NCAA ANALYSIS: STANFORD RETURNING 308 INDIVIDUAL NCAA POINTS

Although an exciting women's NCAA championship just wrapped up a few weeks ago, it's never too early to start looking at next year and how the teams will stack up against each other. It's no surprise that every year teams have to say goodbye to their seniors, but the real question is how will losing these experienced swimmers effect next year?

For teams like Michigan and Southern California, it only means they'll come back with an older, more experienced team since the Wolverines did not have any senior swimmers compete at NCAA's and USC will only lose 6 points scored by Kierra Smith.

Minnesota will take the biggest hit as they lose 87 points from their seniors, but the majority of those points came from their two senior divers.

Georgia and Virginia will take a hit as they both lose 83 points. ... The sprint program for the Bulldogs will have to find more depth as they lose two top 8 50 freestylers with Smoliga (who finished second) and Van Landeghem (who finished eighth). Georgia will still return 169 points with strong sophomore and junior classes. Virginia takes an even bigger hit as they are only returning 66 points of their 149 total points.

California looks to come back with yet another strong showing returning 310 points and losing 56 senior points between Farida Osman (who won the 100 butterfly), Marina Garcia Urzainqui and Kristen Vredeveld.

As for the defending champions there's something to be said for the depth that head coach Greg Meehan has built for Stanford. While it will be hard to lose Lia Neal as someone that the team could consistently rely on, Stanford will still return nearly 200 points more than any other school. They put on a dominant performance finishing the meet with 526.50 points and will be returning 494.50 of those points. ... The Cardinal will return 308.5 individual points next season. That's almost twice as many returning points as anybody else in the country will get back. It's also 100 points more than any team scored individually, including seniors, at NCAAs last season.

TEAM | SENIOR POINTS | NON-SENIOR INDIVIDUAL POINTS | RETURNING POINTS (INCLUDING RELAYS) | SENIOR RELAY SWIMS

Texas | 67 | 83 | 185 | 9
Louisville | 25 | 51.5 | 169.5 | 4
NC State | 62 | 36 | 132 | 9
Indiana | 19 | 98 | 166 | 3
Southern Cal | 6 | 64 | 170 | 5

Michigan | 6 | 95 | 153 | 0

494 returning points?!? Yikes. That's a slam dunk NCAA title. Furdettes need to replace Neal on relays (Pitzer or Drabot) and Forde will score, so Teri needs to keep her powder dry and hold scholly $s for the 2018 class since 200 point scorers don't exist.

Tread water in second and hope Manuel graduates on time and leaves with Hu and Howe. That would give the Bears a title shot in 2019 with the right recruiting class. Favorites if Ledecky bailed too.
