It might not have been a great season in terms of winning a team title, but the Bears won 4 individual titles and 2 relay titles (with a potential 3rd if not for the DQ). That would be fine in most years if many more swimmers had scored. Still, I think many hit personal bests at this meet. (Maybe UAC can update the previous list....)
Have me hands really full this morning, but will do my best to try putting up some sort of Personal Best-by-Event list later...likely not until after the
Men's 800 Free Relay has concluded this afternoon! :p
Meanwhile, here are some stats for how our

I realize that the seven swimmers coming in the next recruit class will not be able to replace the four seniors graduating... Can someone provide reasonable expectations for the newbies for next season? I did notice that four of 'em (Dannie
Dilsaver, Ali Harrison, Natalie Tuck & Alexa Skorus-Neely) specialize in the breast stroke. The other three are Robin Neumann, Elizabeth Bailey & Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou. Which ones might fill some holes and have some impact?
I also believe that I saw mention of another new swimmer being added to the team: was it a transfer, someone out due to academics or a walk-on. Does anyone know to whom I refer or maybe i'm getting senile. I'll turn age 68 this month. thank you all
GO BEARS!
I'll make a note of including the incoming baby :bear: class in that forthcoming/promised lifetime bests list
Hmmm, completely in the dark at my end with regards to an addition to the women's swimming team - anyone heard any rumours or have confirmation of this by any chance?

Several swim websites will publish analyses of returning points in the coming days and Bears will be in good shape relative to everyone but that big ass Taco Bell. Even with a relay DQ, 70+ points is a big cushion over A&M. Farida will be a big loss, but even her relay legs can be replaced.
A&M, Texas, Georgia, and 'SC are talented, but they're not overtaking the Bears. Meehan's a great guy/coach, but he readily acknowledges with no Lia Neal, they probably don't get Manuel and Ledecky. Neal did take an official visit to Cal.

Brynes can score individually, but not contribute on relays. Will be interesting to look at the scoring break down by class among the top ten teams. Bears have strong rising juniors and sophs. Furdettes don't have enough sprint and stroke depth in the pipeline below their rising senior class.
I feel that
Farida's loss will be quite a significant one unfortunately. Osman's such a modest unsung hero and always been massively underappreciated for all her contributions to the team. Not only for her sprint prowess in her individuals, but for Farida's invaluable relay value where her speed & versatility enables a breadth of options for Teri & co.
The room to manoeuvre in terms of the Bears' relay lineups will be noticeably curtailed in our Egyptian princess' absence - for example, can we afford to keep
Abbey on breast in the shorter Medley relay next year if no one else can step up to deliver a studly free anchor leg? How about the 400 Medley Relay which is further complicated with
Marina out of the picture? Put
Amy on back,
Thleen on breast,
Noemie on fly, and
Abbey on free perhaps??
Don't really see any of the incoming froskis having a realistic shot of helping out on the relays, at least in their freshie year...other than possibly
Robin on the 800 Free relay, if she's able to adapt to the short course format quickly and works on her walls, not to mention adjusting to new teammates, coaching & school environments, and a new country to boot...rather big ifs TBH!
Despite their big loss in the case of Lia Neal, the furdette juggernaut is so overstocked with studs in all but one area (breast) and reaping the fruits of yet another #1 recruiting class (by far) that I'm afraid they may dominate to a greater degree next season. To think that the IMs & Distance which were big holes down at the Farm just a short while ago have now become one of the Card's deepest strengths!
At least LSJU didn't succeed in recruiting an elite sprint breaststroker like Mags or Nikol! Fortunately for us, Grace Zhao, whilst undeniably one of the best breast recruits (of a relatively weak class), doesn't appear to represent a significant upgrade over Kim Williams without further development.
Our best shot at a title will prob. come the following year, as Stanfurd will say buh bye to Janet Hu & Ally Howe amongst other key players then. Already well-known for their being top-end stroke specialists, this elite furdette duo has been even more indispensable in terms of the versatility they bring to 4 of the 5 Cardinal relays, thanks to their mean Free sprinting ability and interchangeable skills in the Back & Fly.
However reckon we will have much more to lose the next year after then, with the original
Dream Team all graduating other than Abbey.

So it's really critical that we turn the recruiting around ASAP and build a killer cadre which is commensurate with the premier standards/reputation & rich history/tradition of the school, starting with the 2018 prospects!
Already known is Meehan vigorously pursuing the cream of that crop (Taylor Ruck, Grace Ariola, Elise Garcia, Anya Goeders, Sam Shelton, etc.):

... with Salo vying for Eva Merrell, Cassidy Bayer, Sam Shelton & Swedish Olympian Sophie Hansson, amongst others, for his Trojanettes.
We'll need to counter all of that by working hard on Eva, Taylor, Zoe, Lucie, Dakota, Morgan, Amalie, Julia...also Madison Homovich or Erica Sullivan, Grace Countie, Izzi Henig, Ema Rajic, Halladay Kinsey, Jessica Epps or Mikki Thompson, MSH (as per
tedbear's Canuck scouting hehe) and the rest of the crew...perhaps even go for an international studette of our own like Norway's Marte Lvberg...
