Katie McLaughlin, Abbey Weitzeil and Robin Neumann show off their 200 free hardwareWeitzeil, Bilquist, Relay Add To Win TotalBears Keep It Rolling at Pac-12 ChampionshipsFEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Golden Bears kept it rolling on the third night of the Pac-12 Championships Friday, picking up three more victories to raise the Cal team total to seven titles through 14 events.
Junior
Abbey Weitzeil captured the 200-yard freestyle,
Amy Bilquist snared the 100-yard backstroke crown, and the Bears capped off the evening with a win in the 400-yard medley relay.
Weitzeil claimed her second individual title of the meet following her win in the 50 free Thursday. In the 200, she burst out front and kept her stroke smooth through the final wall. Weitzeil's time of 1:41.97 puts her behind only Missy Franklin and Dana Vollmer in the event in school history, and it stands as the third fastest in the country this season.
Weitzeil was joined on the podium by
Katie McLaughlin, who took second in 1:43.04, and
Robin Neumann, who was third in 1:43.25.
Isabel Ivey finished off Cal's A finalists by taking eighth in 1:46.03.
In the 100 back, Bilquist engaged in a close battle with Stanford's Taylor Ruck from the start. Bilquist edged out to a 0.03 advantage at the midway point and her dive into the wall at the finish handed her a win by six one-hundredths of a second. Her time of 50.46 was a personal best and ranks as the second fastest in the country so far this year.
The Bears had two other A finalists in the race with junior
Keaton Blovad earning a spot on the podium with a third-place finish in a lifetime-best 51.34, which puts her eighth on Cal's all-time list, and sophomore
Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou taking sixth in 52.51 for another personal best.
While Cal didn't pull off a victory in the 100 butterfly, the Bears did the next best thing, finishing second and third in the race. McLaughlin was the runner-up in a PR 50.67 (No. 5 in Cal history) and
Isabel Ivey took third in 51.15.
Maddie Murphy won the B final in 52.39.
In the 100 breaststroke, Cal's
Ema Rajic and
Ali Harrison both broke a minute and likely secured their trips to the NCAA meet. Rajic, a freshman, swam a PR 59.68 to claim first place in the B final (9th overall). Her time gives her the No. 4 slot in Cal history in the event. Harrison was right behind in 59.79.
In addition,
Sarah Darcel, in the opening event of the session, placed third in the 400 individual medley in a season-best 4:05.55.
Phoebe LaMay led the Bears on the 3-meter springboard in 10th place (258.75) and
Briana Thai was 11th (258.40).
The Bears closed out the session with a three-second win in the 400 medley relay, and their time of 3:26.41 rates as the fastest in the nation. Bilquist led off, followed by Rajic, McLaughlin and Weitzeil, who gave Cal its fourth Pac-12 relay title in four tries at the meet.
"Obviously, we had a really, really great night," head coach
Teri McKeever said. "We had a lot of good energy, and, hopefully, tomorrow, we can get the job done in the morning so we can finish off the meet productively.
Stanford continues to lead the team race with 1,154 points, with Cal in a solid second place with 964.5 points. USC (724), Arizona State (644) and Arizona (576) round out the top five.
The Pac-12 Championships conclude Saturday with prelims at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Network beginning at 6:30 p.m.
