CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMPION MIA KRAGH VERBALLY COMMITS TO CAL (2021)

California High School State Champion Mia Kragh has verbally committed to the Cal Golden Bears as a member of the class of 2021. Kragh is SwimSwam's 16th-ranked recruit in the class.

The Cal women, who were the runners-up at last year's NCAA Championship meet, have gotten off to a slow start in recruiting the current class of high school juniors as compared to some of their top-10 counterparts, but are catching up quickly thanks to the commitments of Kragh and McKenna Stone.

In May, as a sophomore, Kragh won the California State Championship in the 100 yard fly, swimming a 52.26 in the race. Along with Stone, this gives Cal the defending California and Illinois high school state champions in that event.

After the sprint butterflies, Kragh's next-best events are the sprint freestyles. She ranked among the top 30 15 & unders nationally last season in the 100 free (50.08) and 50 free (23.11).

She really made big leaps as a high school sophomore to really push her into the elite class of recruiting that would be invited to commit this early to a program like Cal. As a freshman, her best time in the 100 fly was 57.86. As a sophomore, and into the start of her junior season, she's been faster than that swim 12 times already, cutting a total of 5-and-a-half seconds from her best.

She saw a similar drop in 2019 in long course, improving her time in the 100 meter fly from 1:05.18 to 1:00.68 and an Olympic Trials cut. That Trials cut came just 3 weeks ago at the Kevin Perry Senior Invite.

Best Times in Yards:
  • 50 free - 23.11
  • 100 free - 50.08
  • 200 free - 1:48.89
  • 100 fly - 52.26
  • 200 fly - 2:10.20
Cal has a big class of 2020 coming in with a lot of very good backstrokers, but it is a class that is limited on great butterfliers. Isabel Ivey is holding that group in-tact until she graduates, but the addition of Kragh and Stone to the roster on 1 season of overlap with Ivey is an important addition for the long-term health of the program. Cal's biggest need in this class now, as it seems to perpetually be, is a breaststroker to take over after the graduation of Ema Rajic (also scheduled for 2021).

Kragh swims for Rancho San Dieguito Aquatics and Torrey Pines High School.

THE FIRST 100 VERBAL COMMITMENTS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2021

It's not even Thanksgiving in fact Signing Day for the class of 2020 was only two weeks ago but already we have written 100 articles on the verbal commitments from the high school class of 2021.

Because of changes to the recruiting schedule instituted by the NCAA over the last two years, prospective student-athletes are now able to take official visits to campuses beginning in September of their junior year. Therefore, they are making verbal commitments much earlier than in years past.

With 100 names in our database so far, we have written about 16 of the girls and 16 of the boys from our way too early lists of top-20 recruits from the class of 2021.

Our biggest need now is an elite sprinter to anchor the medley and free relays, and help replace the loss of the greatest sprinter in school history, Abbey. If she happens to be the best backstroker, and second best flyer in her class, then it's all a bonus. #goldenticket

Another impactful flyer if we were to scout north of the border would be Gigi Sasseville (#26 Nat, #2 ON) who holds a promising sprint fly best of 59.76.

Seeing that Cal has already landed the *3rd fastest sprint flyer* on Swimswam's Top 20 rankings for the 2021 recruiting class in #16 Mia Kragh (#45 Nat, #1 CA), reckon there wasn't really an urgent need for Teri to add another speedy butterflier other than for depth, esp as an in-state commit (Mia) would free up more of the scholly budget for further talented additions as opposed to an international get (Gigi). {EDIT: well, unless the recruit's initials are GW lol }

Gigi's LCM to SCY conversion -> 59.76 to 53.00 according to World Juniors Finalist Genevieve "Gigi" Sasseville Verbally Commits to USC for 2021, so Mia's 53.32 isn't that far off Gigi's converted PB of 53 sec in the 100 Fly, minus the uncertainty surrounding an international's ability to translate her long course prowess smoothly & quickly to the little pool.

MK also brings to the table a promising upside in her sprint frees, which incidentally also happen to be swifter than Gig's converted times in the 50 & 100.

For example, the progression curve from Kragh's 2017 to 2019 seasons = 25.05 -> 23.11 (50 Free), 54.20 -> 50.08 (100 Free), 1:59.81 -> 1:48.89 (200 Free).

For reference, the only sprint flyers faster than Mia on SS' Top 20 list are the top 2 in the class: #1 Gretchen Walsh (52.23, in her 3rd best stroke!) & #2 Torri Huske (51.29)!

TOP 8 U.S. JUNIOR WOMEN TO WATCH AT THE 2019 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

ISABELLE STADDEN

Whereas Bacon is a little bit ahead of Stadden in the 100 (59.02 to 59.69), Stadden has the edge in the 200 with a lifetime best of 2:08.16. Her seed time of 2:08.39 puts her third behind leader Lisa Bratton and Alex Walsh, though; she and Walsh went head-to-head at the 2019 Pan American Games in the 200 back, with Walsh edging her for gold, but Stadden dropped a lifetime best 2:08.16 to win the event at the 2019 Pro Swim Series - Greensboro. We're really witnessing an absurd spike in women's backstroke talent, a discipline in which the United States already has a dominant and star-studded history.
SwimSwam said:

GRETCHEN WALSH

The younger sister of Alex, Gretchen Walsh is looking more and more primed to snag at least a 4100 free relay spot on the 2020 Olympic Team. A fast-rising sprinter, this summer she put together performances that put her that much closer to being an important part of Team USA next year. After going 21.82/47.49 in the 50/100 free in yards this spring, she dropped LCM bests of 24.71 and 53.74 in those two events. She's seeded third in the 50 and fifth in the 100, but when considering Americans, she's #2 in the 50 and #3 in the 100. Her fly and back have come along, too, so her 100s there may be very impressive as well.

Goes without saying that Berkeley visitor Gretchen Walsh (anchoring on the free leg), in tandem with 2020 Baby Bear Isabelle Stadden (leading off on back), would constitute rather phenomenal bookends to Cal's future medley relays...if I can be permitted to dream a mite...

TOP 8 U.S. JUNIOR WOMEN TO WATCH AT THE 2019 U.S. OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

CLAIRE CURZAN
Claire Curzan was one of several youngsters to really break out in long course over the summer. She comes in as a phenomenal butterflier and backstroker, and at age 15, she's seeded sixth in the 100 fly (57.87) and eighth in both backstrokes (1:00.00/2:10.16). While her butterfly progression has been well-documented, Curzan is currently sitting 7th and 12th in the 100 and 200 back 15-16 historical rankings, respectively, and she's still 15. Her underwaters are immaculate, and given her age, more improvements here would make her Olympic team chances that much more realistic (especially given the uncertainty behind Kelsi Dahlia in the 100 fly).
.
JUSTINA KOZAN
The 15-year-old Kozan, yet another butterfly standout, is better at the 200. Her time of 2:09.68 seeds her 12th, though it's 17-year-old Lillie Nordmann and 15-year-old Charlotte Hook who are seeded fourth and sixth, respectively, with impressive 2:07's. Kozan, who is also a great sprint freestyler, was perhaps most outstanding in the 200 IM last summer. She won the 2019 World Junior title in the 200 IM with a 2:11.55, a time that seeds her fourth at this meet, just behind Alex Walsh. Kozan is a machine, and she will be racing the 100/200 free, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM this week.

OTHER TOP JUNIORS EXPECTED TO RACE THIS WEEK:

Claire Tuggle (15)
Charlotte Hook (15)
Rye Ulett (15)
Natalie Mannion (15)
Kennedy Noble (15)

No doubt a mite premature at this stage to speculate on the 2022 class lol,..but here's a preview of some of the notable talents mentioned by Swimswam above, all waiting in the recruiting wings... :p

a) SoCal standout Justina Kozan (#2 Nat, #1 CA), who has shown an interest in Cal amongst other programmes (doesn't hurt that her coach @ Brea is none other than Cal swim alum Jimmy Johnson :p), would represent a worthy successor to Izzy on the fly leg (along with Mia) with her current best of 52.42, which surely will drop quite a bit more by the time she starts college.

Justina's times:

100 Fly - 52.42
200 Fly - 1:56.44 ->1:54.75 @ 2019 Winter Juniors! (update)
200 IM - 1:56.31
200 Free - 1:45.77 ->1:45.15 @ 2019 Winter Juniors! (update)
100 Back - 54.12
200 Back - 1:55.74

b) As for Claire Curzan (#1 Nat, #1 NC) - well just consider these SCY stats of hers, with 2 more seasons to improve upon - wow!!!

100 Fly - 50.64
100 Free - 47.67
50 Free - 21.89 -> 21.77 @ 2019 Winter Juniors! (update)
100 Back - 51.23
200 Back - 1:52.76

c) And then there's mid-distance freestyle ace Claire Tuggle (#3 Nat, #2 CA)...had reportedly moved from Clovis to DART (Chenoa's club)?

Jessica Davis (#120 Nat, #9 CA) => Cal

Welcome to the Cal family, Jessica!

Developing backstroker from locally (Carondelet HS).

Same club as Maddie Murphy & fellow 2021 commit Jacob Soderlund (Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks)

Crow Canyon's Jessica Davis Verbally Commits to Cal's Class of 2025

Backstroker Jessica Davis of Lafayette, Calif. has opted to remain in-state for her college career and has given her verbal commitment to the Golden Bears for the fall of 2021.

Davis does her club swimming with Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 100 back with the Summer Nationals standard in the 200 back. She raced both backstroke events at Juniors this past summer after finishing 29th in the 200m back at Phillips 66 Nationals. Last winter, she earned three best times at Juniors West before going on to win the 100/200 back combo at Far Westerns.

A current junior at Carondelet High School, Davis is a four-time CIF North Coast Section Championship finalist. The NISCA All-American placed eighth in the 100 back at the CIF State Championships during her sophomore season after taking sixth in the event as a freshman.

She told Swimming World:
Quote:

"I'm super excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at UC Berkeley! Thank you so much to my family, teammates and coaches for supporting me. GO BEARS!!"
Her best times include:
  • 50 back - 25.86
  • 100 back - 54.53
  • 200 back - 1:59.04
Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go, Davis will add valuable depth to a long history of Golden Bear backstroke success. She has consistently dropped time each season, shaving off three seconds in the 100 back and four seconds in the 200 back over the past two years. She would've placed in the C-final of both backstroke events at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships and will join Mia Kragh and McKenna Stone as a member of Cal's class of 2025.

2021 Baby Bear Jessica Davis lowered her 100 Back best of 54.53 to 54.47 this evening, leading off Crow Canyon's 400 Medley Relay squad to a 6th place finish.

Jessica had also achieved a new lifetime best of 25.77 in her 50 Back last night (prev PB = 25.86), as the leadoff leg of CCCS' 3rd place 200 Medley Relay team.

    ANNIKA MCENROE MAKES VERBAL COMMITMENT TO CAL FOR 2021-22

    Spartanburg, South Carolina's Annika McEnroe, an Honorable Mention on our Way Too Early List of Top 20 Girls in the high school class of 2021, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for 2021-22. That puts her in a class of 2025 with Jessica Davis, McKenna Stone, and #16 Mia Kragh.

    McEnroe swims year-round for Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club. Outside of high school she specializes more in the longer-range breaststroke, fly, and IM events. She earned 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials cuts in the 200m breast (2:31.53) and 400m IM (4:51.76) this summer at Speedo Junior Nationals.

    At 2019 YMCA National Short Course Championships in April, McEnroe updated her lifetime bests in the 200 breast, 100/200 fly, and 200/400 IM, earning Summer Juniors cuts in all her events.

    McEnroe's best SCY times are already within scoring range for Cal at the conference level. She would have made the B finals of the 200 breast, 200 fly, and 400 IM, and the C finals of the 100 fly and 200 IM last season.

    Top SCY times:
    • 200 breast 2:12.43
    • 100 breast 1:04.28
    • 400 IM 4:12.94

    • 100 fly 53.99

    Junior National Bronze Medalist Annika McEnroe Verbally Commits to Cal for 2021

    McEnroe does her club swimming with Y-Spartaquatics/Greater Spartanburg YMCA and owns seven Junior National or faster standards.

    A current junior at Spartanburg High School, McEnroe is a six-time South Carolina 5A State Championship finalist. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100 back and 100 fly as a junior after taking second in both of those events during her sophomore season.

    She most recently finaled in the 200m breast at the Toyota U.S. Open last month and earned four silver medals at the South Carolina Championships last winter.

    This past summer, she achieved 100% best times at Junior Nationals where she placed third in the 200m breast and fifth in the 400m IM.

    Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Golden Bears, McEnroe will add valuable depth to their breaststroke and IM group.

    She has already achieved the 2019-20 NCAA 'B' standard in both the 200 breast and 400 IM as well.

    Should Skyler, whose ranking has since been bumped up to (#70 Nat, #4 CA) following her spectacular time drops of 1:01.93 -> 1:00.55 (100 Br) & 2:17.00 -> 2:14.29 (200 Br) @ 2019 Winter Juniors West, make a decision to commit elsewhere (3 official visits - USC, UT, Bama, along with an unofficial to UCLA...UPDATE -> recent trip to UNC, and has now committed to the Tar Heels), there's another fast-rising breast talent who hasn't yet commit in the class that I reckon would be worth a serious look, assuming the usual good team & academics fit criteria are in play, along with mutual interest.

    Alicia Henry (#87 Nat, #2 GA) from Dynamo (Junior Elizabeth Bailey hails from the same swim club) had thrown down a noteworthy 1:00.20 pool record at the 2020 Speedo Eastern Classic just this past weekend (SwimSwam report in the embedded link), which is faster than Skyler's newly minted 100 Breast PB!

    Incidentally, Henry's lifetime best in this event is probably faster than any of SwimSwam's Top 20 recruits here: WAY TOO EARLY NCAA RECRUIT RANKS: GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2021...

    That #87 National ranking of Alicia's doesn't reflect her latest achievement (College Swimming still lists Henry's previous best of 1:00.69 from 2019 Winter Juniors East), although her 200 Breast PR of 2:15.36 is recorded there.

    Reckon Alicia 's sprint breast speed would complement 2021 Baby Bear Annika McEnroe's distance breast chops quite nicely. Although presently not quite as versatile as Annika who's quite solid in her 200 Fly & 400 IM in addition, Henry's sprint prowess would be invaluable in our medley relays and she would be a natural successor to Ema Rajic following some more development, IMO.
    • UPDATE -> Alicia's 1:00.20 has now been added to CS' database, which bumps her National ranking from #87 up to #64 as of 25 Jan 2020.
    • UPDATE -> Henry attended the dual v. Zona yesterday @ Spieker, along with half a dozen other 2021 prospects - details of this latest group of Cal visitors will be forthcoming on bearz012's list: Which 2021 Recruits are Visiting Which Schools?
    Other talented breaststroke prospects closer to home would include local Shelby Suppiger (#69 Nat, #3 CA) from Crow Canyon who has already notched a swift 2:12.41 in her 200 Br (solid 1:01.31 in her 100)...as well as PASA's Melanie Julia (#75 Nat, #5 CA) with a strong 1:00.80 & 2:13.80 to her name, repping France on the international level.

    2021 Baby Bear Stephanie Akakabota appears to have raw talent & speed in spades, with massive upside & potential in her sprints that may have slipped under some people's radar.

    Akakabota's improvement curve in the *50 Free* from 26.60 (2017) -> 23.90 (2018) -> 22.46 (2019) is really intriguing (*100 Free* will need more work), and gives hope that she may develop into a pure sprint hammer anchoring Bears' relays under Teri's & Dani's able guidance.

    In fact, a quick glance at this Swimswam ranking, WAY TOO EARLY NCAA RECRUIT RANKS: GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2021, suggests that only 3 recruits from the class (#1 Gretchen Walsh - 21.82, #2 Torri Huske - 21.95, #13 Amy Tang - 22.06) have been swifter than Stephanie's 22.46 in this event, according to CollegeSwimming's database!

    =======
    • UPDATE -> CS results were revised today, bumping their previously reported 22.46 for Stephanie's 50 Free PB down to 23.12, in line with what's recorded on USA Swimming's database.
    =======

    Being academically oriented (interest in robotic engineering) and exhibiting mad skillz in the arts (performing the piano @ Carnegie Hall not once but twice) sure doesn't hurt either, and fits in brilliantly with Cal W Swim's reputation of recruiting well rounded prospects who are as adept out of the pool as they are in it.

    DOUBLE WINTER JUNIORS A-FINALIST SHELBY SUPPIGER COMMITS TO CAL

    Suppiger trains with the Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks and attends Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California - less than 15 miles from the Cal campus. Crow Canyon's head coach Ethan Hall is married to Cal swimming legend Natalie Coughlin.

    Suppiger is primarily a breaststroker and finished in the A-final in both the 100 and 200 yard breaststrokes at December's Speedo Winter Junior Championships - West meet. She finished 4th in the 200 breast and 7th in the 100 breast.

    She also took 3rd in the 200 IM at the 2019 California State Championship meet as a sophomore and 7th in the 100 breast.

    In long course, Suppiger's best times of 1:11.72 and 2:37.41 in the breaststrokes, and 2:22.54 in the 200 IM, are all Summer Juniors cuts.

    Best Times in Yards:
    • 50 free - 23.62
    • 100 free - 51.13
    • 100 breast - 1:01.31
    • 200 breast - 2:12.41
    • 200 IM - 2:01.15
    • 400 IM - 4:29.35
    The success of sophomore Ema Rajic notwithstanding, depth in the breaststroke group has been an ongoing issue for the defending NCAA runners-up Cal over the last few years.

    Last year, for example, Stanford, USC, and Arizona State all out-scored Cal at the Pac-12 championships in the 100 breaststroke; the gap was more pronounced in the 200, where Stanford scored 115 points and Cal just 38.

    Suppiger is in a similar spot in the 100 to where Cal's current top 2 breaststrokers, Ema Rajic and Ali Harrison, were as juniors in high school.

    Suppiger's best time in the 200 breaststroke would rank 2nd on Cal's team this season. She would have scored in B finals in both the 100 and 200 breastrokes at the Pac-12 championships last season.

    Of the team's top 4 current breaststrokers, only Rajic will still be a member of the varsity team at Cal when Suppiger arrives.

    SwimSwam jumping on the train to tout Stephanie's insane improvement track:

    FROM 29.0 TO 23.1 IN 50 FREE IN 2 YEARS, STEPHANIE AKAKABOTA COMMITS TO CAL

    At this point in her career, in the pool, Akakabota will be a project for Cal head coach Teri McKeever, who was the 2012 U.S. Olympic women's team head coach. Akakabota is a pure sprint freestyler: her best time in the 100 back, for example is just 1:19, the 100 breast is 1:29, and she has no official times in the 100 fly in the SWIMS database.
    But whats she has shown is incredible growth as an athlete, and that's what makes her an enticing prospect for a team like Cal. She didn't go under 29 seconds in the 50 free until she was almost 14 years old. Now, 2 years later, she's knocking at the door of 22 seconds in yards, and last summer was a runner-up at a USA Swimming Futures Championships in the 50 meter free in 26.22.

    COOK SWEEPS 1A-4A SPRINT RECORDS WITH 23.0/49.8 AT OREGON GIRLS' 1A-4A STATES

    In the 100 free, Catlin Gabel's Lizzy Cook swam to a dominant 49.81, clipping her best and taking down the 1A-4A Record. Cook, a junior, was less than 4 tenths away from the overall State Record, which stands at a 49.46 done by Centennial's Jamie Stone in 2016.

    Cook swept the 1A-4A Records in the sprints, as she also won the 50 free in 23.09, just hundredths shy of her best from Winter Juniors. She anchored the 200 medley relay in 22.69, the fastest of the field as Catlin Gabel took 2nd. She also anchored the 400 free relay (3:39.84) to victory with a field-best 50.31.

    • UPDATE =>
    1:00.8 BREASTSTROKER MELANIE JULIA OF PASA VERBALS TO CAL FOR 2021

    A French national living and attending high school in California, Julia is one of the top French juniors in breaststroke. At the 2019 French Junior National Champs last spring, she placed fourth in the 50 and 100 breast and eighth in the 200 breast.

    As a freshman at Gunn High School, Julia was runner-up in the 100 breast (1:02.17) at the 2018 CIF Central Section Championships. She went on to take fifth (1:02.26) at the CIF State Championships. Last season, she won the Central Section title in 1:01.03, then swam to a runner-up finish at State (1:01.44). Most recently, she hit best times to nab fifth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 breast at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships - West.

    The class of 2025 has a good mix of breaststroke talent, though. Julia joins Top 20 HM Annika McEnroe, Ella Mazurek, Jessica Davis, McKenna Stone, Elizabeth Cook, Stephanie Akakabota, Shelby Suppiger and #16 Mia Kragh in Cal's class of 2025. Of this group, Suppiger is 1:01.3/2:12.4, McEnroe is 1:03.2/2:12.4 and Stone is 1:03.1 in the 100.

    Definitely would have missed this tidbit about future Bear Mia Kragh (#16 in '21 class) if I didn't click on this article, but:

    MICHAEL ANDREW SWIMS LIFETIME BEST IN 100 YARD FLY AT CARLSBAD SECTIONALS

    A lifetime best of 52.01 for Rancho San Dieguito 16-year old Mia Kragh opened up the swimming on Friday evening at the Alga Norte Aquatics Center for the 2020 Carlsbad Sectional meet.

    That swim undercut by a quarter-of-a-second her previous best time, done at the 2019 California State Championship meet where she won the state title. It also cruises well under the 53.32 that she did at this meet last season for the Cal commit.

    Heading into the pending start of California High School season, teenage swimmers across the state have a trickier balance to weigh than most of the country: as the last State Championship meet in the country, qualified swimmers have to balance the state meet against the U.S. Olympic Trials that come about 6 weeks later. With a long course best of 1:00.68 in the 100 fly, Kragh has a trickier balance than most: she is within reach of the 59.87 that it took to qualify for a second swim in 2016, but also has a state title to defend.

    Samantha Pearson, who will swim for Cal's rivals Stanford next all, took 2nd in 52.51. Primarily a sprint freestyler, in total Pearson whacked her previous best time of 54.35 on Friday.
