Wow - Cal takes the first set 28-26. Cal had first chance at 24-23, then fought off a set point down 25-24 (well, not much fight as Utah served into the net), then Cal's second chance at 26-25, but ultimately prevailed on a Utah attack error.
Forte with 6 kills on 8 attacks and one error.
Dani Drews for Utah leads all with 9 kills on 18 attacks with one error.

Set Two: Passing issues have returned and attacks are going high and long.
Cal down 5-2.

Receiving errors passing errors and Cal is down 9-4. Time out.
Yes, I saw Rennie limping slightly. It doesn't look like much of a brace on her (right?) knee. But, hard to tell on the stream on the computer.

Down 11-5, Crosson with a challenge to make it 11-6 and Cal closes to 12-10 forcing a Utah timeout. Huizenga starting to show up.

Bears tie it up at 14 and actually took at 15-14 lead but Utah with 4 straight. This is just a street fight.

Cal took a time out but are still in a daze. Now down 23-15 and the fight seems to have gone out of them

and Cal loses second set 25-15.
Time to regroup.

Here's a symptom - Forte still with 6 kills for the match.
Cal hit negative for Set Two. Atypical - even giving Utah credit.

Drews with 31 attacks out of 84 for Utah and 13 kills.
Mircovic leads Bears with only 24 attacks
Can Bears stop Drews - because Utah really depends upon her.

Utah has one block through two sets? wow.

Cal jumped out to 5-2 lead. But now it's tied at 6

Cal now up 12-7. An ace here - a block there - some better receiving.
But, lots of set left to play

4 more for Bears and Drews can't connect from back row. Haynes and Anderson with some strong swings. Utah calls its last time out of the set.

MM with a big kill. Huizenga with a big kill. Cal with a 22-11 lead.

Anderson closes it out 25-15 - and it wasn't that close.

Cal hit 400 for set three. Utah 100 - which was a vast improvement for Utah to finish with.

Drews up to 17 kills. MM with 11 kills but only 5 digs.....
Utah did find a second hitter to go with Drews in Oblad - but Utah didn't have a single block in set three. Cal with 8 blocks for the match so far.

Set Four - Bears come out strong - a little nip and tuck but from I think 7-6, it is now 12-6 and Utah calls time.
MM up to 15 kills. Huizenga with a vicious kill down the line. Cal hitting 538 in the set so far.

Bears out to 18-11, but Utah won't go away. And they close it to 18-14.
Utah has two blocks this set - 3 for the match (they average 3 per set!)
Cal with 10 blocks.

bears. Sigh. That big lead has all but disappeared. It's now 19-18 Cal.

and now Utah takes the lead 20-19. Bears just look - not lost - but just not smooth. Utah serves are causing problems.
Cal calls time again.
Time to dig down Bears and fight back.

Utah with another ace out of the time out.

wow. Cal loses 25-21. It was two different halves of the set. 13-2 run.
I think Cal has only gone five sets once this year.
Just inexplicable to lose when up 18-11 - even against a good team like Utah.

Bears have played 2.5 good sets. So, we will see which Bears team comes out for set five.

I watched most of the fourth set to watch Cal finish it. I must be bad luck because the Utes outscored the Bears 13-2 to even the match 2-2. I'll NOT watch the fifth set for the good of the team. GO BEARS!

At the side switch, Cal leads 8-5. Forte with a couple of monster kills. But, we know from set four that no Cal lead is safe.

Tough rally on the next point ended by Haynes to get Cal up 9-5. Drews slipped. And Utah calls time? Yes, they do.

Bears keep going to Haynes - her dings don't land but big swings do and Cal leads 13-6!

And Mima from the back court sends it down and Bears WIN! 15-6.

Mima finishes with 18 kills (341) and 11 digs. Also 2 service aces.
Forte with 13 kills - 435
Haynes with 11 kills - 242
Anderson with 9 kills and 5 blocks.
Huizenga with 7 kills but only 148.

Bears hit 478 in the fifth set - no errors. 262 for the match.
Cal had 11 blocks for the match.

Utah led by Drews with 25(!) kills, 12 digs, 5 service aces and hit 306. Just wow.
(Berkeley) Oblad (how is she not a Bear with that name?) had 11 kills and hit 308.
Utah hit 183 for the match.
oh, Utah did get up to 6 blocks for the match after having only 1 through first three sets.

So, lots of good things for the Bears -including great fortitude and bounce back. Obviously, some not so good habits giving up huge runs in second and fourth sets.

But, a match against cellar dweller Colorado is next.

I wonder what the attendance was. It looked meh on the Pac12 Network feed, but they showed only one side. The Cal Band was there - which is great. (EDIT: found it on live stats 1172 which is not too bad - but it's not the 4k that watched the Stanfurd match)

This team deserves more support - (yeah, I'm not going to the games, because, well, i'm not exactly in the neighborhood - but we did drive up to Fort Collins for those early matches)

Great fortitude to hang on for victory! I lied-I did watch the dominant fifth set. Cal now 16-1! GO BEARS!

Just back from a 12 day trip back east. Saw the bears beat Arizona on my computer in Chicago. Hope to go to the Colorado game live. Couldn't stay awake last night to finish the game.
