Eddie Hart's Olympic story brings to mind the wild 1970 NCAA T&F Championships in which he starred. The record books show Cal finished 10th but in reality, our Bears won that championship only to be stripped of the title because of eligibility issues relating to our other sprint (and football) star, Isaac Curtis. I was there and watched Eddie and Isaac go 1-2 in the 100 and 1-3 (I think) in the 200, win the 400 relay, and get unexpected points in Paul vault and triple jump. Cal's pony-tailed half miler, John Drew, was dq'ed or the margin of victory would have been higher. Very exciting to be in Des Moines for this and very disappointing to be stripped of the title. But Eddie Hart was the fastest human alive at that time and was/1s a great Golden Bear!
