400 IM: Horns put a whopping four up in the A-final. Grieshop gets in, but Gonzalez unfortunately gets pushed down to the B-final. No second swim for Jhong or Kopp. Yikes.

100 fly: Cal comes up big with Hoffer leading the way into tonight's A-final (44.24).

200 free: Julian grabs another A-final swim for the Bears in the 200 free.

100 breast: Reece gets an A-final swim, as does Corbeau.

100 back: Great swim from Destin (44.5) to take second seed for tonight. Mefford inches in for 8th, but Carr barely makes a second swim back at 16th.

So far, Texas has 4/0, 1/1, 3/1, 1/0, and 1/2 in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 1 breast, and 1 back (10/4).
Cal has 1/1, 1/0, 1/0, 1/0, and 2/1 in the same (6/2).

On paper, expected to be a weaker morning for the Bears, but definitely some serious momentum coming back from Texas. Not sure if they've clinched the meet with today's prelims and the performance from divers

That prelims lifetime best of *44.5* from Lasco is really impressive, considering that his previous 100 Back record was a 45.21 (Nov 2020 Dual @ Furd), with Destin's pre-Cal best being a 45.93 from 2018!

Now ranks as #2 on the school's All-Time Top 10 list, behind only Murph's 43.49 from 2016.

Mefford's *45.04* PB from this morning's heats also claims 5th fastest in school history, just one spot down from Shield's 44.86 in 2012. Bryce's old best was a 45.38 accomplished @ 2021 Pac-12 & 2019 NCAA.

Horns take a 1-2 finish for big points, then grab first in the 400 MR by 0.5s over Cal (3:00.23 to 3:00.73).
That being said, Lasco, Whitley, Hoffer, and Seeliger lower the school record, so a pretty solid swim.

Didn't get to see the finals session last night, but did notice from the published results that the front half of Destin's leadoff swim in the 400 Medley Relay was much slower than usual relative to his 100 Back prelims, with the back half splits panning out pretty similar:

400 MR (leadoff): *45.28* (r:+0.66/22.35/22.93)
100 BK (prelims): *44.55* (r:+0.66/21.74/22.81)

Just speculating if Lasco had experienced an issue with his wedge, or perhaps slipped at the start of the relay??

All "what-if" territory naturally lol, but that 0.73 sec differential alone for Lasco would have won the relay for our Bears over the Horns, and lowered their relay school record even further!

Hoffer's *44.24* in the 100 Fly is a new school record, superseding Shield's 44.59 from 2013! His old best = 44.85 (2020 Pac-12).

Julian's *1:31.95* 200 Free prelims time represents his 2nd fastest ever. Trenton's lifetime best = 1:31.41 (2021 NCAA, 800FR leadoff), which ranks #2 in Cal history, after Seli's 1:30.14 from 2019.

Note: Shields does have a faster 43.84 to his credit, but that was achieved in 2016, and so would be ineligible for inclusion in the Cal books.

2021 NCAA MEN'S DAY 3 UPS/DOWNS: TEXAS EARNS 10 A-FINAL SWIMS, FOUR IN THE IM

Entering this morning's prelims, the Longhorns set up a dominant night with 14 returning swims, 10 up and 4 down. Cal (6/2), Georgia (4/2), and Florida (4/1) were all not even close to matching Texas' depth in the pool.

With the evening Texas set up, the Longhorns will score in all five individual events, including more than 55 projected points in two events (400 IM/200 FR). Meanwhile, Cal won't score more than 40 points in a single event. In total, the Longhorns are expected to pick up 170 points in the pool before 3-meter diving and the 200 medley relay. Cal has the second-most with 104 points, which can result in a 39-point deficit to Texas after leading the first two days.

SCORED PRELIMS + CURRENT SCORES
Not including: 3-meter diving, 200 medley relay
1. TEXAS: 373.0
2. California: 334.0
3. Florida: 230.0

Cal should defeat Texas in the 200 Medley Relay tonight. Bears have a faster swimmer in every stroke. Louisville looks like they might be the toughest competition in this race.

Did someone place a "hex" on Cal's 400IM performers in both mens & womens events? Our female 2nd place finisher in the 200 IM finished 22nd in the 400IM prelims and the men's #2 performer in the 200 IM last night placed 10th this morning in the 400IM prelims, too. What happened to these great junior swimmers? GO BEARS!

Yeah I have pretty much lost hope of catching Texas. It's to be expected; we basically went into the meet with 10 swimmers with any possibility of scoring. Texas has 20 athletes. Bears needed to be perfect, either hitting or bettering best times across the board, and while they've been very good they haven't been perfect. Texas was close to perfect today, and that means there's essentially no chance.
Looking to enjoy the rest of the meet and focus on the highlights; Hoffer's potential perfect individual meet, Lasco having a historic freshman season, Mefford going out on a high note, hopefully winning the 400FR Whitley getting close to the 200 breast record. Also excited to see what Casas, Finke, and McHugh can do. Wish the Bears were more competitive, but it will be nice to watch without the stress.

400 IM: Little bit of a knife twist there Hugo wins the B-final in 3:36.73, which actually would've won the entire event. Finke scorches his freestyle (3:36.90) to come back on C. Foster for 1st, and Grieshop grabs 3rd behind.

Ouch, but lesson learned for next year... let's hope!

100 fly: Two individuals, two wins. Hoffer brings a second gold home in 44.25, 0.01s slower than this morning.

200 free: Smith (UF) wins in 1:30.10 over Kibler (1:30.39), and Julian lowers his PB again to 1:31.55. Texas leading by over 30 at this point, but a pretty strong finals session so far from Cal.

100 breast: Reece swims 51.03 for bronze, behind McHugh (50.1) and Hillis from Minnesota/Florida respectively. UT's Corbeau takes sixth (50.62) in matching his prelims time.

100 back: Carr takes third in the B-final, 45.32, to move up from his 16th seed. Bronze behind freshman Chaney (UF) and Staka (Texas); Katz (Texas) also 6th in the heat. Lasco takes bronze in the A-final, matching his 2 IM result, while Jiang takes fourth. Mefford 8th in 45.52.

Lasco drops another 0.06 for a new PB, 44.49 from his 44.55 earlier this morning. Go Bears!

The key for Cal tomorrow is the 200 back event. The Bears possess 5 of the top 11 times in the field and could score highly here. Due to the diving points for Texas, it appears nearly impossible for Cal to catch the Longhorns.
The Bears have a shot at capturing the swimming results but when S & D are added together-it looks like runnerup this year at the NCAAs. Finish strong! GO BEARS!

Yeadon, Greishop and Kopp in the 1,650 it will be fun to see how the distance group performs. Hopes high there. Got a feeling Gonzalez scores well in 200 Breastliked his 1:00.9 breast split in the 400 IM and how he responded well to his prelim adversity. Lasco has put his mark on future teams!! Hope Julian closes the deal in the 200 Fly- that would be special. Frosh flyer Rose probably super ready to finally get it on!!!

How Do the Texas Longhorns Have the Edge at NCAA Championships?

After almost falling out of national title contention at the end of Thursday night, Texas was again the favorite to capture a championship by noon on Friday.

... All that is to say Texas did not swim to their maximum potential Friday night. The Longhorns had been mostly lackluster on Thursday, too, prior to their blistering medley relay triumph. Heading into the final day, Texas has won two relays and one diving event but not a single individual swimming event.

And yet, Texas is still winning this meet, with a 42-point lead over rival California.

How is that possible? And has anyone ever won an NCAA team title without winning any individual swimming events?

Texas Longhorns Fueled by Depth

For the first question, the answer is pretty straightforward: insane depth.

... This Texas team, however, has a run of very good swimmers in every event without having anyone that stands out above all else.

So no, it's not a team full of superstars, but it's a team full of very good swimmers. If all swimmers were to swim to their seeds in Saturday's competition, Texas would end up with a six-point advantage over Cal. That does not include platform diving, where Texas is likely to get another big boost. Of course, a lot can change and will change. Remember, it was Texas' 69-point overperformance in Friday's swimming prelims that put the Longhorns into the driver's seat for the national championship.

Meanwhile, Cal overperformed by 38 points in the Friday AM action, only to be overshadowed by Texas, but the Golden Bears have their best day on Saturday, with three national championship favorites (Hoffer in the 100 free, Reece Whitley in the 200 breast and Trenton Julian in the 200 fly) plus three of the top four seeds in the 200 back. A long way to go indeed.

Think Cal may be out of the title hunt now, unfortunately, but hoping all swims go great tonight. Should still shape up to be a strong session with all of the Bears in finals. Hoping Hoffer gets his three peat, Reece and Julian win their respective 200s, and also looking forward to the Bear showing in the 200 back. Everyone has had a strong meet, but Texas depth and divers pushed this in their favor (though, it's certainly not over till it's over!).

Eating some of my words here (unless I can call myself prescient)... that 2-3-4 finish in the 200 back! Exceptional. Lasco nearly pulling off the win over Casas, 1:35.99 to sneak under 1:36 and re-cement his fastest freshman ever status in the backstrokes and 2 IM. Casas 0.02s over Murphy's AR... what an incredible race to watch.

100 free: Hoffer wins his third event of the meet (believe him and Casas are among pretty hallowed company in the triple wins at one meet). 40.89 to take 0.01s off his morning swim, PB, and school record! Texas' Krueger and Kibler tie for second, 41.59, and Seeliger grabs fourth to sandwich the podium.

200 breast: Whitley upset by McHugh here. Cal takes 2-3 with Whitley and Gonzalez.

Tough lost for Bears. Looking forward to the Olympics Swimming Trial when the finals will be flooded with Cal caps just like it was 5 years ago.

Almost every year, UT has #1 recruiting class in swimming, yet they won only 2 out of 19 swim-events and then had to rely on diving to win the championship. It does not look like a success to me. Yet people spoke ill of McKeever when she got a couple of #1 swim-classes.

Rankings pulled from TOP 20 NCAA SWIMMING RECRUITS IN THE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2021:

Cal has #6 Jack Alexy,, #14 Trent Frandson, and "Best of the Rest" mentions Kai Crews and Gabriel Jett.

From this same list, Texas has #2 Anthony Grimm, #4 Tim Connery, #15 Luke Hobson, and BOTR Nathan Quarterman.
NC State makes a serious charge in picking up five with #1 Aiden Hayes, #7 Sam Hoover, #11 David Curtiss, #12 Arsenio Bustos, and #18 Garrett Boone. Curtiss is probably even higher than his no. eleven ranking belies due to big LCM and SCY swims this year.

On the "un-ranked" note, other Cal commits are Evan Petty, Jacob Soderlund, Michael McGillivray, Robin Hanson, Sean Swift, and Ziyad Saleem.

Strong on freestyle and backstroke in this class -- Hanson is a big international get -- though I believe Swift/Soderlund are breaststroke/IM leads, but as debated here, not sure on who will step in to fill Hoff's shoes on the fly leg of relays.

Early look at 2021 Men's Swimming Recruiting

Thanks, swan! The ten member 2021 recruit class appears formidable and will go a long way toward filling spots left open by the eight graduating seniors. What is your best guess on which swimmer might fill the butterfly void for individual events plus Hoffer's medley relay legs? GO BEARS!
I ain't swan, but I can weigh in. The incoming class is talented but very freestyle heavy. Assuming none of hoffer, Julian, or B. Mefford stick around for a fifth year the best remaining 100 butterflier this year would be Jensen, but he has had a disappointing freshman year and right now doesn't look like a great option.
Only incoming swimmer that seems like a flier at all is Jett, but he tends towards 200, same as Rose. Could see either of those guys coming down for the 400MR (more likely Rose, since we know he's already good for a 1:42 200, but Jett is rapidly improving), but probably not the 200MR. Hanson also has a 54.14 in season 100 LCM fly best, which is hard to project but might translate to him being the guy.
For the 200MR, most likely option is that one of the sprinters switches over, as often happens; I guess Seeliger is most likely being the fastest overall. Wildcard for both is Lasco; his best is only a 48 but it was from an in season meet and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was actually the best. However unless someone like Saleem has a big drop it's probably still worth it to keep him on backstroke. I guess my prediction as of now is Seeliger 200MR (not very optimistic here, hoping for a 20.low-ish) and Rose or Hanson for the 400MR (more optimistic; seeing some untapped 100 fly potential, especially for Rose if he focuses more on it or--unlikely but we can hope--hasn't been fully tapered this year and still has a big drop coming in his 200).
I don't have much to add to BRBear's fine analysis. The last two classes have been very light on sprint Fly, with Matt Jensen's 46.58 PB in the 100 Fly swam in high school the best in not only the last two classes, but also has not been bested by a 2021 recruit. But as BRB noted, Matt had a pretty rough first year.
Most of the sound bites from interviews with the current seniors sure make it sound as they will all be moving on, but obviously our best solution would be for at least one stud flyer to decide to continue to train with Durden while working on a graduate certificate. We shall see.

What's Next for Cal?

So where does Cal go from here? Obviously, there's an Olympic season coming up with many Golden Bears postgrad swimmers expected to qualify for the Olympic team and several members of the college team expected to be in contention. But next year, Cal loses a lotHoffer, Julian, Grieshop, Mefford, Carr, Yeadon and Biondi. Some of that group could choose to take advantage of the NCAA extension on eligibility, but if not, that's six individual scorers and one critical relay piece.

Cal brings back just five scorers in Lasco, Whitley, Gonzalez, Seeliger and sophomore Colby Mefford, younger brother of Bryce and the 13th-place finisher in the 200 back on Saturday. That's a daunting rebuild looming, but Durden could not have achieved 11 straight top two finishes at the NCAA championships without some brilliant coaching, so Cal will undoubtedly be back.

Indeed, the Golden Bears have a nine-man recruiting class coming to Berkeley in the fall, including talented New Jersey sprinter and backstroker Jack Alexy, Swedish freestyler and World Junior Championships runner-up Robin Hanson and Iowa freestyler Trent Frandson. Some from that group may make an impact on the national level as soon as next season.

But for now, California fans should be proud of their Golden Bears, an outstanding team that just happened to come up against this Texas squad. Make no mistake: Texas won this championship far more than Cal lost it.

More analysis here: 2021 NCAA MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SCORING BREAKDOWN

In short, the senior class (as we know) is leaving a huge hole, scoring far and away the most points of any class from any team at the meet.

Need the current sophomores to step up next year- C. Mefford, Louser, Petrides, and others (Laueffer, Somerset, etc.) to drop time and qualify. Otherwise, strong performances from juniors (Reece, Hugo) and freshmen (certainly excellent for Destin!). We'll have to see how Dave & team puzzle out the multitude of relay holes that will be left open as well.

A quick peek at the table below yields some interesting stats - Cal's 568 points that earned Bears runner-up status this year actually has surpassed every single team's score from *2005* NCAAs onwards, bar none! (i.e. including all the championship winning teams in that 17-year period)

Frustrating for us here to note that there have been 2 other occasions (2018 & 2010) where Bears had blazed out more swimming points than the Horns, only to see our arch-rival claim the national team title thanks to their diving points.

This year saw a deep Texas team do it without winning a single individual swimming event (in all fairness, they did come out on top in 2 relays + 1 diving event) ... also to UT's credit, all 20 of Eddie Reese's NCAA crew scored, which is quite a testimony to their depth. In comparison 3 of the 15 strong Bears squad didn't quite make it to finals (Jr Jhong, So Somerset & Fr Kopp).

Cal Finishes As NCAA Runner-Up

Bears Earn Top-Two Finish At NCAA Championships For 11th Consecutive Meet

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A total team effort powered California to a tremendous final session and 568 points, but the Golden Bears came up just short with a runner-up finish at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

By placing second, Cal earned a top-two finish at the NCAA Championships for the 11th consecutive meet dating back to 2010. The Bears' 568 points were the most ever by a runner-up at the national meet, surpassing Stanford's 501 from the 2002 championships, and were more than Cal scored in its 2019 title (560). Texas won the 2021 title with 595 points, 83 of which came from diving events.

Pardon me, in my bearly concealed subjectivity/zeal to highlight the point above lol, just would like to post a wee addendum or rather correction to the above, namely "with the exception of Texas' 595 winning score this year" & "in that 16-year period"...

To make up for this, here are some videos of the races from the final night:
