Cal v. UCLA (Day 1) - Women:

------------

Cal W Swim said:

We're underway vs. UCLA and already have a record to report. E Riley, Gantriis, Garcia and Ivey lower the Spieker and Cal dual-meet record in the 200 free relay to 1:27.57.

Alicia Wilson with a big 200 IM - 1:53.58. That's a new pool record, Cal dual-meet record and the #2 time in the country this year!

Ayla Spitz posts a 4:39.86 in the 500 free for the #8 time in the country. And for those scoring at home, that's three races and three Cal dual-meet records so far.

Ema Rajic with another sub-59 100 breast, winning the race in 58.91.

Isabelle Stadden keeps the Bears rolling, taking the 200 back in 1:51.17.

There goes the record book again ... Isabel Ivey breaks Abbey Weitzeil's pool and dual-meet records in the 100 free, touching in 47.53.

Down goes another Cal dual-meet record! Rachel Klinker wins the 200 fly 1:53.51 for the fifth fastest in the country this year.

Briana Thai with a victory for the Bears on the 1-meter board at 291.98.

Cal closes out the day with a win in the 400 medley relay - Stadden, Harrison, Garcia and Gantriis go 3:32.40. We'll be back to close out the 2-day meet tomorrow morning.

Cal v. UCLA (Day 2) - Women:

Time to finish strong against the Bruins. For those with the Meet Mobile app, live results are now available to follow Cal vs. UCLA.

We're underway on a sunny Sunday morning at Spieker, and the Bears win the opening 200 medley relay. Stadden, Rajic, Gantriis, Garcia get to the wall in 1:36.33.

We've got our first pool record of the morning! Sarah DiMeco goes 16:13.97 in the 1650 free - the 13th fastest time in the country this year.

Eloise Riley gets her hand to the wall first in the 50 free, clocking 22.28.

Isabel Ivey takes the 100 back in 51.86.

Ema Rajic pulls away to win the 200 breast in 2:13.09.

Robin Neumann posts a season-best 1:44.01 to lead a Cal sweep of the 200 free - the #5 time in the country this year.

Isabel Ivey picks up the 100 fly win to go with her 100 back victory, finishing in 52.27.

Alicia Wilson adds her name to the record book, swimming a Spieker-record 4:06.64 to claim the 400 IM.

Finishing with a flourish: Neumann, Gantriis, Riley, Ivey post a pool and Cal dual-meet record in the 400 free relay (3:12.79).

That's all from Spieker for the day..

What happened to frosh Nicole Oliva (200 free-500 free)? She swam in the non-scoring Stanford meets but now her name has disappeared from the roster. She performed reasonably well, too. She's Filipina and attended St Francis HS in Mountain View.

I also noticed the exact same thing happened to frosh male free-styler (500), David Calvin. He did finish last in a race vs Stanford so I guess that is more understandable but he is no longer a member of the men's team.

GO BEARS!

As Postseason Looms, Re-Ranking the Top-25 NCAA Women

=========

25. Robin Neumann, Senior, Cal

2021 times: 100 free, 48.66; 200 free, 1:44.01

Even with the loss of sprinter Abbey Weitzeil, Cal still has a good team capable of a top four finish at NCAAs, and senior Robin Neumann has played a big role in that. In limited action this semester, she is ranked in the top eight in the 200 free and will play a big role on Berkeley's relays that could take some people by surprise.

=========

18. Isabelle Stadden, Freshman, California

2021 Times: 100 back, 51.24; 200 back, 1:49.77

Stadden has made her Cal debut this semester with the second-fastest time in the nation in the 200 back. Cal has a rich history in this event, with NCAA champions Natalie Coughlin, Helen Silver, Missy Franklin, Elizabeth Pelton and Kathleen Baker donning the blue and gold for coach Teri McKeever. Stadden could be another in a long line of backstrokers in Berkeley.

=========

11. Alicia Wilson, Junior, California

2021 times: 200 IM, 1:53.58; 400 IM, 4:04.10

Wilson is ranked second nationally in both IM events and is a big reason why the Golden Bears are again favorites for another top three finish at NCAAs. Wilson is well ahead of where she was last year and could score some big points come NCAAs in six weeks.

=========

4. Isabel Ivey, Junior, California

2021 times: 200 IM, 1:55.08; 100 fly, 51.77; 100 back, 51.52; 100 free, 47.53

Ivey is one of the more versatile swimmers in the NCAA and has been a key piece to Cal's relays moving forward without American record holder Abbey Weitzeil. Ivey has already proven to be a force in a number of events this season, putting up nationally top ten ranked times in four events with the 100 free as perhaps her best shot at a national title.

I believe senior IMer Sarah Darcel has yet to swim for Cal this season and may remain in Canada. I believe Dave Durden is working to allow several current seniors to swim next year and I assume Teri has similar plans. But allocating money to the returning seniors creates funding issues for future classes. For the men, if the top seniors return, the men have an excellent chance at winning at NCAAs in 2022. I do not believe that is the case for Teri's crew.

Hmmm, was wondering that about Nicole too... IDK if she's focussing on making the Philippines national team for Tokyo, perhaps??

Sophie & Ashlyn aren't listed on the 2020-2021 roster either - their social media bios are presently still displaying "Cal Swimming" - perhaps they are concentrating on their academics at this point?

TBH not quite sure if 5th year seniors make a lot of sense from the funding end of things, as Teri & Dani will be bringing in a pretty massive class of 14 froskis next season, tho having a mid-sprint free stud like Robin compete an extra year in the blue & gold does sound like a relatively attractive option!

Agree that the women will have a better shot at claiming the national team title @ 2021 NCAAs than the following year, with a current temporarily wobbly Furdette team thanks to some key deferrals (Hoos are still the big favourites here).

Come next season, LSJU will be bolstered by WR ace Regan Smith, Taylor Ruck (if they don't turn pro ) & #6 Lillie Nordmann ... not to mention #2 Torri Huske, #4 Amy Tang & #8 Samantha Tadder from the 2021 recruiting class.

UVa will be adding #1 stud Gretchen Walsh (who had visited Cal on an official) amongst other notables...

Both Men & Women's Relays are all more than safely in for 2021 NCAAs, thanks to having at least one of our relays go under the 'A' cut invite time! (i.e. just need 1 relay A cut to get all the other relays in).

Indeed 3 relays on the Women's side have already achieved that mark (400 FR, 200 FR, 200 MR), along with a high B cut time in the 400 MR (note that the 800 FR haven't been contested as yet this season).

These relay times to date aren't all that far off last season's bests from 2020 Pac-12s & the 2019 Minnesota Invite, which is quite an encouraging sign seeing that we don't have the luxury of American Record holder Dubs on anchor for the sprint free legs anymore!

Izzy & Alicia have notably been lights out, then there's Isabelle claiming the lead role for Backstroke U (does nicely free up Ivey for fly relay duty), Ema continuing to drop further down into new territory & establishing additional Cal Breast records, with frosh Emily adapting smoothly to the little pool & on an encouragingly swift track to establishing herself as Bears' sprint ace, Eloise shaping up brilliantly in that same dept, and Elise developing her potential via those promising sprint free splits from last weekend's meets!

Keep in mind that the fastest 400 MR raced by Bears this season came from the more than solid squad of Isa, Ali, Elise & Emily - if Ema & Izzy were inserted into the middle legs of this relay, Cal could conceivably drop a further 4 to 5+ seconds...

PAC-12 WILL TAKE 2021 MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS TO HOUSTON

The 2021 Pac-12 conference is planning to host their men's and women's swimming championships at the University of Houston in 2021. The original and regular host, the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington, has remained closed, as it has been since last March.

The diving championships will be held in Arizona.

The current leading plan would have the men's meet follow immediately after the women's meet, rather than the traditional consecutive-weekends. That decision is expected to be shored up this week.

The Pac-12 previously was deep in talks to host the meet in San Antonio, but that wound up falling through late in the process.

PAC-12 COACHES SET DATES FOR 2021 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pac-12 women's swimming championships will run from February 24-27 and the men's championships will run from February 28-March 3, the conference's coaches decided this week.

There will be no spectators allowed, including parents, though coaches are working on a live stream option to watch the meet.

The women's meet will be followed by a Last Chance event the morning of February 28 before the men's meet begins that evening.

Both meets are planning to follow their typical three-and-a-half day format with the 800 free relay and 200 medley relays in a timed-finals day 1 evening session, followed by the remainder of the typical championship schedule.

PAC-12 COACHES SET DATES FOR 2021 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pac-12 women's swimming championships will run from February 24-27 and the men's championships will run from February 28-March 3, the conference's coaches decided this week.

NCAA WILL ONLY REDUCE D1 CHAMPIONSHIP SIZE IF LESS THAN 50% OF TEAMS COMPETE

The plans indicate that the NCAA plans to host all Division I winter & spring championships, including swimming and diving and women's water polo, regardless of how many institutions are participating. This comes in wake of the Division III committee canceling all winter sport championships, including swimming and diving, because of low participation numbers.

In individual sports, like swimming & diving, if at least 50% of Division I sponsoring institutions are competing, the field size will remain at normal levels and the standard number of student-athletes will be invited. In Division I swimming & diving, that means 270 men and 322 women.

According to the latest NCAA data, 132 Division I institutions sponsor men's swimming & diving, while 193 sponsor women's swimming & diving. This means that at least 66 men's institutions and at least 97 women's institutions must be participating for the field to remain in-tact.

At present, 104 men's swimming teams and 143 women's swimming teams have results marked as eligible for NCAA Championship selection in the official NCAA results database. While we don't know for certain that all of these teams will be competing 30 days prior to the deadline, this appears to put Division I swimming & diving well clear of the threshold for full NCAA Championship participation, with room to spare.

2020-2021 NCAA WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING POWER RANKS: FEBRUARY EDITION

It's our last round of power rankings before conference meet season and we've got a theme of this month's ranks: One big question for each team heading into conference championships.

Less than a year removed from a canceled NCAA Championships, will teams approach conference meets differently?

Previous Ranks:
#25: UCLA BRUINS (+)
How well can the Bruins hold up their current Swimulator projection of 34 relay points? That includes the nation's 8th-ranked 400 free relay - but it's very difficult to project how much the current relay rankings will be shaken up after a pandemic season with limited competition opportunities. Breaststroker Claire Grover probably booked an NCAA invite with a 59.91 breaststroke last month, faster than she went in all of 2020.
#24: AUBURN TIGERS (-)
#23: NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (-1)
#22: ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS (-2)
#21: WISCONSIN BADGERS (-)
#20: UNC TAR HEELS (-2)
#19: USC TROJANS (+4)
Will Marta Ciesla get back to her best times in sprint free? Ciesla was a few tenths off career-bests last year, and that was without an NCAA meet. The Pac-12 is probably the biggest mystery of any conference right now, because they've had so few meets to show their stuff. We know the breaststrokes are in good hands with Kaitlyn Dobler and Isabella Odgers, but USC needs their kingpin sprinter to pull the relays together.
#18: TEXAS A&M AGGIES (-1)
#17: LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (-2)
#16: VIRGINIA TECH H2OKIES (+3)
#15: INDIANA HOOSIERS (+1)
#14: OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (-)
#13: FLORIDA GATORS (-)
#12: MISSOURI TIGERS (-1)
#11: NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS (+1)

#10: KENTUCKY WILDCATS (-)
Can the Wildcats drum up one or two more sprinters to support Riley Gaines on the relays? Freshman Megan Drumm has been a pleasant surprise so far. Kentucky just has to develop one or two more relay legs.

#9: ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (-)
Will Cora Dupre regain her freshman phenom form from Indiana, giving the Alabama relays a huge boost?

#8: TEXAS LONGHORNS (-)
Can the Texas women be as good in the post-season as they have been in the regular season? (Note: this big question copy/pasted from every power rankings in the past decade).

#7: STANFORD CARDINAL (-1)
Who from Stanford is going to show up? We haven't seen, for example, Lucie Nordmann at all this season. With a brief intermission in their parade of stars (Neal, Manuel, Ledecky, Ruck, Smith), Stanford is going to have to rely on its incredible depth more than ever.

#6: GEORGIA BULLDOGS (+1)
How game-changing can Zoie Hartman be? Obscured behind the eye-popping swims and versatilty of #1-ranked recruit Kate Douglass last year, #2 Hartman was a do-everything star in her own right. Did you know Hartman went 58.2/2:06.2 in the breaststrokes and 1:53.0 in the IM at SECs last year, but also split 22.2/47.4/1:42.2 on free relays? Just how much better would she have been by NCAAs?

#5: MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (-)
How many points will the relays score? Michigan is currently 16th in the Swimulator, but with zero projected relay points. For reference, the Wolverines were projected for 104 relay points last year and scored 156 relay points in 2019.

#4: TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (-)
We know Mona McSharry is a legitimate NCAA title contender in breaststroke. But how good can she be as a sprint freestyler on Tennessee's fully-reloaded relays? McSharry has been 22.3 and 49.4 so far this year, helping to ease the loss of Erika Brown to graduation.

#3: NC STATE WOLFPACK (-)
As a freshman, highly-touted backstroker Katharine Berkoff didn't hit personal bests in the 100 or 200 back, suggesting she might have been saving a full taper for an NCAA meet that never happened. With Berkoff already hitting her career-best 100 back and near a career-best 200 back this year, the question is whether we're about to see an explosion of two years speed - and if so, exactly how fast could Berkoff (50.4/1:50.1) go?

#2: CAL GOLDEN BEARS (-)
The Pac-12 has had limited competition opportunties, but Cal has pretty much answered any questions with a deluge of fast swims over the past month. Izzy Ivey's event lineup remains an intriguing question. She went 200 IM/100 fly/100 back last year, but is also the #2-ranked 100 freestyler in the nation this year. Does she try to avoid Maggie MacNeil in the fly and chase an event title elsewhere? If the team battle is at all tight, could Cal try to use Ivey to battle Virginia's Kate Douglass anywhere - maybe the 100 free or 100 fly? Pac-12s might offer some hints - or it might be purely misdirection.

#1: VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (-)
What will the Cavaliers do with Kate Douglass on day 4 of NCAAs? She's the top 100 freestyler and 200 breaststroker in the nation, and both by a wide margin. But UVA is already deep in the 200 breast. Do they chase a headline-grabbing event with 5 potential A finalists in the 200 breast (Douglass, Walsh, Nelson, Keating, Wenger), but risk their own swimmers bumping each other into the B final? Or do they spread out their talent, using Douglass to counter Cal's strong 100 free crowd?

SWIMULATOR SNAPSHOT: TOP THE SAME, BUT MOVEMENT BELOW BEFORE CONFERENCE CHAMPS

Just as on the men's side, the top two women's teams are the same as when we last looked at the Swimulator, and once again, Cal has surged, this time by an even larger margin.

With some additional racing over the last few weeks, the Golden Bears have gone from a projected 168 points and a 9th-place finish to 366.5 points and a 3rd-place finish.

The USC women jumped from unranked to 16th, thanks again to some great races against Cal, highlighted by an epic duel between USC's Kaitlyn Dobler and Cal's Ema Rajic two weeks ago.

Isabel Ivey Named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week

Junior Set 6 Pool And Dual-Meet Records In Meets Against USC, UCLA

Cal's Isabel Ivey, USC's Harry Homans Named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Week

California junior Isabel Ivey and USC sophomore Harry Homans were named Pac-12 Swimmers of the Week on Tuesday.

Ivey set a Cal dual-meet record of 51.12 seconds in the 100 backstroke in a meet with Stanford, the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season. She added a Cal dual-meet best of 47.24 in the 100 freestyle, an event where she holds the second-fastest time in the nation. She also won the 100 butterfly in 51.68. Ivey is ranked in the top 10 nationally in four events (including sixth in the 200 individual medley and seventh in the 100 fly).

Ivey also was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week two weeks ago.

Bears solidify undefeated season in final meet against Stanford

It had been six years since Cal women's swim and dive last claimed victory over No. 10 Stanford, but the casual fan wouldn't have guessed that given the commanding fashion in which the Bears throttled their archrival over the weekend.

"It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I got a best time without being fully rested," DiMeco said. "Obviously, there was a lot at stake, and I had the whole team behind me, so it was the perfect opportunity to get a best time."

"I wasn't expecting to go a best time. I dropped two best times very quickly," Ivey said.

"I have learned that even though I am competing against other people, I am competing against myself. I have learned to be confident in myself and learn the dives. Overall, we have been doing pretty well, and we are enjoying having fun," Thai said.

"The meet went really well, and they embraced another chance to race," Korman said. "It was a full team effort. Obviously, we had a lot of event winners, but it came down to everybody scoring, and this shows how close we are as a team this year, and that's what we are going to need going into Pac-12s and NCAA meets coming up."

Well UVa's strutting their stuff with already a new NCAA/American record from their 1st race last night (200 MR), with a star-studded cast led by uber-versatile ace Kate Douglass.

The Hoos are certainly cementing their undeniable position as the team to beat this year, and indeed for the next several cycles (courtesy of their top recruiting class of 2021, spearheaded by #1 Gretchen Walsh)...

Bears will counter with a very sizeable incoming class which may lack the household names of their Hoo & Furdette counterparts, but will have the potential to add some depth & balance to Cal - so bearing that in mind:

Note: One massive by-product of the NCAA's announced change to timed finals for all relays (instead of just the 800 Free relay traditionally) will be some extra breathing room & rest for our top swimmers - thanks to no longer having to contest for a favourable final heats berth @ morning prelims (even if deep teams like Cal may well have a very capable B relay team waiting in the wings to tackle morning heats!).

The staggering of lanes (open water on both sides) and the increase in the number of heats should also help to produce some excitingly swift times imo.

NCAA CONFIRMS DRAMATIC CHANGES TO D1 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR 2021
The biggest news is that the relay events will be swum as timed finals with one empty lane between each relay in an attempt to mitigate the number of swimmers crowded behind the blocks for each race.

Since the proposal was initially reported by SwimSwam here, many college coaches have spoken up in favor of the plan as it reduces the load on top swimmers, who historically have had as many as 14 swims over 7 sessions of competition.

The change will also even the field against the top teams that have enough depth to put relays into the A final without using all of their best swimmers.

The 800 free relay is traditionally raced as a timed final on the meet's first day, with other races being swum as prelims-finals events.

The NCAA in making the announcement of changes also confirmed that all sessions, including prelims, will be streamed on ESPN3.

Isabel Ivey Powers Cal 'On a Mission' into Pac-12 Championships

Through all of the upheaval that the pandemic caused, Ivey returned to Cal and has put together a stellar junior season. She won three events in the final dual meet of the season to lead the Golden Bears past rival Stanford for the first time in six years. She was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week.

"We were on a mission when we got on the bus to go across the bay. We were so excited," Ivey said. "There was never a quiet moment on our side of the deck. We relied on each other. We had to remind each other what we were there to do."

"We had such great leaders before with big shoes to fill. We have the experience going to NCAAs and we hold each other accountable really well," Ivey said.

That leads the Golden Bears into the Pac-12 Championships.

"I feel like we have a really good chance to win Pac-12s this year," Ivey said.

"Every meet that has happened, individual swims are getting faster," Isabel Ivey said. "People are swimming with more passion and gratitude. That is what mindset is. I would love to go a best time, but I am just to thankful to have an opportunity to race and be on deck with my team."

PAC-12 WILL TAKE 2021 MEN'S & WOMEN'S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS TO HOUSTON

-----------

PAC-12 COACHES SET DATES FOR 2021 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

STANFORD'S BROOKE FORDE WILL SWIM 400 IM/200 FREE DOUBLE AT PAC 12s (PSYCHS)
The Cal women, likewise, only have about 20 swimmers that they're bringing to the meet. In some events, that means the full 24-place scoring system won't be reached at this year's championship (like the 400 IM, where there are only 22 entries without scratches).

Another versatile swimmer, Cal junior Alicia Wilson, holds top-8 times in the Pac-12 this season in a whopping 7 championship events, but has whittled her Pac-12s schedule down to just 3: the 200 IM on day 2 as the top seed, a big head-to-head battle with Forde in the 400 IM on day 3, and the 200 back on day 4.

There's still ambiguity in the schedules of some top swimmers. Cal junior Izzy Ivey, for example, has 5 individual entries: 200 IM, 50 free, 100 fly, 100 back, and 100 free. With top 2 seeds in all 5 events, she has lots of options.

Cal's Ayla Spitz, Sarah Dimeco, and Robin Neumann, plus USC's Isabelle Odgers also have 4 entries in highly-seeded events.

2021 PAC-12 WOMEN'S FAN GUIDE: THIS YEAR LOOKS PRETTY GOLDEN

The Cal Golden Bears look very strong this year, favored to put a stop to the Stanford win streak and then go up against the Cardinal and Virginia for the NCAA title in March.

STARS

Cal - Isabel Ivey (junior everything), Robin Neumann (senior freestyler), Isabelle Stadden (freshman backstroker), Ema Rajic (junior breaststroker), Emily Gantriis (freshman sprinter), Alicia Wilson (junior IM/backstroker), Ayla Spitz (sophomore free/backstroker) - In their big win over Stanford recently, Cal's strength really shone through. Several of these stars will be contesting for conference crowns in more than one event, and in a year where the NCAA is a bit thinner in sprint free, freshman Emily Gantriis joining powerhouses Robin Neumann, Eloise Riley and Isabel Ivey is huge.

SHOWDOWNS

200 BREAST
Meanwhile, Cal junior Ema Rajic threw down a lifetime best 2:07.16 at the Stanford Invitational in November, losing to Raab by a mere hundredth. She was just tenth in this race at the 2020 Pac-12s, unable to crack 2:11, but she looks much-improved this season.

100 BACK
Cal has one of the most mythical backstroke legacies in the country, and since 2011, only Cal or Stanford swimmers have won this event at the Pac-12 Championships. Amy Bilquist took the victory for the Golden Bears in 2019, ending a three-year Stanford streak, and Isabel Ivey continued for Cal with a 2020 win (51.06).

This year, no other teams pose much of a threat to Cal's backstroke group. Instead, it'll be an intra-Bear, same-name (ish) showdown between defending champ Ivey and freshman Isabelle Stadden.

Ivey has been 51.5/51.8/51.1 in the 100 back in her three performances this season, remarkably consistent between November, January and February meets. She holds a lifetime best of 50.42 from a fourth-place effort at the 2019 NCAA Championships, a meet that came shortly after she graduated high school a semester early to join the Bears that spring. Ivey was 51.73 in November 2018, so her drops from one semester at Cal were pretty dramatic.

Stadden, on the other hand, has excelled in long course before joining the Bears. A blue-chip backstroke recruit in a sea of blue-chip backstroke recruits, Stadden holds an LCM best of 59.69 from the 2019 Pan American Games, while her yards best is a 51.23 from the 2019 NCSA Spring Championships her junior year of high school.

Stadden hit a lifetime best 1:49.77 in the 200 back at the Stanford Invitational in November, while she hit a best in the 200 free (1:49.12) at Cal's dual meet with UCLA in January. Ivey's the favorite, but Stadden's newness is on her side, and her experience to-date suggests she can make things interesting.

200 FREE RELAY
This season, no Pac-12 woman has been under 22 seconds yet in the flat-start 50 free. Cal freshman Emily Gantriis and Cal sophomore Eloise Riley are 1-2 in the event, though, at 22.14 and 22.22, respectively. Cal also leads the conference with a 1:27.57 from their dual meet with UCLA.

Between Gantriis, Riley, Elise Garcia (#4 in the conference right now at 22.33) and some fourth swimmer (Ivey might be on the other four relays, but she was 21.5 anchoring the relay against UCLA), Cal looks really strong. Stadden has already split a 21.8 this season, too, while a freestyler like Ayla Spitz or Robin Neumann, or a versatile talent like Alicia Wilson, might also slot in. Cal will likely have four legs under 22 here, although they don't have the hammer of an Abbey Weitzeil or Amy Bilquist this year.

Stanford beat Cal's Ivey-less 200 free relay in their February dual, 1:28.77 to 1:29.19, with a team of Anya Goeders (22.48), Emma Wheal (21.90), Lauren Green (22.19) and Lauren Pitzer (22.20). Freshman Janelle Rudolph wasn't on the Stanford relay against Cal, but she was 22.29 in high school and had a big 47.7 relay leg at the Washington HS Championships in 2019, so she might be the wildcard for the Cardinal.

If Ivey does stick with the other four relays, this could be an interesting race; with Ivey in, though, Stanford and USC don't have that kind of a hammer split right now (Ivey anchored Cal to the win with a 21.4 last season), and Cal will be favored.

SWIMSWAM PREDICTIONS

Cal looks to have this in the bag with their Swimulator projection, and we can't argue with that. The Golden Bears have certainly been the best Pac-12 team this year, and they look to be in the NCAA title hunt with Virginia in March.

Cal has all of its bases covered, individually, and a strong sprint core means their relays will be formidable, too. Stanford is never a team to show their whole hand until the very end of the season, but several major redshirts hits at their depth and keep this team from posing too serious a threat. The Cardinal have plenty of swims to be excited about, though, and their stable of divers should keep the Cal win margin more down-to-earth.

FINAL PREDICTIONS

Leading Storylines For This Week's Power 5 Conference Championships (Psych Sheets)

    Meet Info:
    • Who: Psych Sheet
    • Finals will begin at 6:00 p.m. (Central) each night
    • Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. (Central)

What does Cal's championship lineup look like?

The Golden Bears are currently ranked #1 in the country and haven't won a national title since 2015.

Racing opportunities have been limited for the Golden Bears this season as they have not left the state of California to compete since last year.

After watching Virginia do what they did last week, what does Cal have in response?

We haven't seen them swim a three and a half day championship meet in suits yet so there is a bit of an unknown.

And oh by the way, the three-time defending national champs Stanford will also be at the meet.

finals are 4 pm PST, correct?

If Ivey doesn't anchor the 200 free relay, Furd could pull an upset. How many races can a swimmer participate in?
Cal swept the 50free, the100free and grabbed 1st & 3rd in the 200 free vs Stanford but lost the final relay event of the dual meet. I was stunned. On paper-it should have been an easy victory. GO BEARS!
