Newsom has great political instincts. If you look at some of the "controversial" positions he's taken over the years, almost all of them have turned out shrewd in hindsight. I haven't studied him exhaustively so there may be some outliers.

Given the fact that he's a prominent politician who has shown himself to be shrewd and has all of the historical characteristics from "central casting" I think he's got a pretty good chance to be POTUS some day. I think he would wipe the floor with Trump in 2024.

The only reason we are having a recall is because it's easy to do so. This has nothing to do with Newsom and in the unlikely event he's recalled and replaced with some idiot, he will immediately launch a recall petition and when that's done he will be governor again. It would take time, as this one has, but it would be a foregone conclusion. Remember - Jon Cox lost by 24 points in 2018 and would probably "win" the recall election with less than a third of the vote.

The lockdowns due to the pandemic have hit California hard, people have reasons to vote him out that they didn't have before.
