On Valentine's Day Sofia a Valentine's day video to her YouTube subscribers, a romantic song in Spanish. She is multi-lingual; I only understand her posts in English; at this time the Russian versions might not be suitable for sensitive right wing ears. She was born more than a decade after the Soviet (Russian) tyranny ended. Until after Valentine's Day, she was enjoying the freedom of an independent Ukraine, with 142 thousand YouTube subscribers around the world. Now she is not posting music videos, singing, yodeling, etc...

Now she is posting the "Truth" as she sees it from hey eyes on the ground under attack. Not CNN or MSNBC or Faux News, just the victim's perspective. The latest post:

Her first post on the War:

She is wrapping herself in the Ukrainian flag/colors; very attractive blue and gold.

California should temporarily adopt these colors as a show of solidarity.

Hey guys! With my little 2 brothers and my parents we are performing a mashap of 2 emotional ukrainian songs "When The War Will End" and "I Wanna Be Where You Are" (original by Okean Elzy). I hope the world will stop this war soon. I hope you enjoy performance from The Protsenko Family.

Very nice performance by the Protsenko family. I have stumbled across a video or two of Karolina Protsenko performing and she's an incredible violinist. Very animated on stage. I hadn't seen her performing with her family.

The current war in Ukraine has reminded me of a young girl I had seen on The Voice Kids Ukraine in 2019. She also was covering a song by Okean Elzy, "Not Your War". This was recorded in the wake of the earlier invasion of Ukraine by Russia and it deeply affected the audience. Daneliya Tuleshova (who's from Kazakhstan) was 10 years old when she performed this and went on to be the winner of The Voice Kids Ukraine that season. She later appeared on America's Got Talent and made it to the finals. Her future appears very bright. I'll post the version of "Not Your War" with English subtitles and superimposed war movie footage. I don't generally prefer the war footage version, but it's appropriate right now.

Hopefully she's only lost power or internet service and not something worse. However, as an experiment, I was able to connect my VPN to the server in the Ukraine yesterday and it worked, though rather slowly. I disconnected after a few minutes as I didn't want to prevent anyone over there from getting on the internet. They need it far more than I do right now.

FWIW the Guelder Rose Viburnums, also known as the Snowball Bush (Viburnum opulus)

Is considered an invasive plant in the Eastern US and planting is discouraged.

Sofia has been quiet for a few days, supporters start to worry., then today this video makes it's way to California

As an explanation: Mentions of the viburnum or kalyna can be found throughout Ukrainian folklore such as songs, decorative art, Ukrainian embroidery, and poetry. Its symbolic roots can be traced to the Slavic paganism of millennia ago. According to a legend, kalyna was associated with the birth of the Universe, the so-called Fire Trinity: the Sun, the Moon, and the Star.[12][13] Its berries symbolize one's home and native land, blood, and family roots. Kalyna is often depicted on Ukrainian embroidery: ritual cloths and shirts. In Slavic paganism kalyna also represents the beauty of a young lady, which rhymes well in the Ukrainian language: ka-ly-na div-chy-na.[14][15][16] The song Chervona Kalyna was the anthem of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, and a berry cluster is today an insignia of the Ukrainian Army
