What does he want? The A's have gone 806-715 over the last 10 years (a .530 winning percentage) and made the playoffs 6 times. That's hardly second rate though I agree it's not the best. Aside from the Warriors, I don't think any Bay Area franchise is significantly better. Generally, the A's have been very competitive despite having a limited payroll.

They do desperately need a new stadium. 55 years is long enough for the Coliseum. It's always been a dump anyway.

He's right about the current ownership being terrible though. I'm sure there are plenty of other rich people in the Bay Area who would love to buy in to MLB and wouldn't run the franchise so cheaply.

Being an A's fan is tough, because ownership clearly doesnt care.
They manage the team like a commodity based business.
He's right. It's untenable.

I agree about the owner. I really don't follow baseball as closely as I used to, but everything I've heard about the current owner says that he's either cheap or can't afford to run a baseball team effectively.

Aren't the Giants a Bay Ara franchise? haven't they won a couple of World Series titles in the last ten years?
And had the best record in baseball last year? Oh and pre-Covid had exceptional attendance.
Like the A's, the Giants couldn't persuade the City/county to build them a stadium; so they went the LA Dodger route and built their own stadium on city land. With the Raiders gone, I can't think of a worst professional Bay Area franchise than the A's. The 49ers might be closest, can't stand Levi Stadium.

Did you give the Warriors extra credit for leaving Oakland/AC? While the Giants stayed in The City?

OK, I didn't mean to start a range war. I merely meant to point out that the A's aren't terrible. You have a good argument that the Giants have won 2 World Series in the last ten years. They've also lost 85 or more games 4 times in the last 10 years. In fact, using the same last 10 years metric I used for the A's, the Giants went 779-739, a .513 winning percentage and somewhat worse than the A's. Because of the 2 World Series wins, I'd give the edge to the Giants, but they clearly have had higher highs and lower lows. I'm more of an A's fan than a Giants fan, but I've been a Giants fan since I was 3 or 4 years old. I still have a drawing I did of Willie Mays back when I was around 5. Unless my wife has been getting rid of my "clutter" again.

I'm from Oakland. I lived there the first 35 years of my life there aside from my time at Cal. I don't give the Warriors any extra credit for moving to San Francisco. I'm disappointed for Oakland, but I'm not butt hurt about it. It's not like I could afford Warriors tickets these days anyway, if I still lived in the Bay Area. I'm a fan of all the Bay Area teams, not just Oakland or just San Francisco. Like I suggested above, I root for the A's when they play the Giants. I was delighted to see the Giants winning 3 recent World Series. The exception to being a fan of Bay Area teams was the Raiders before they bugged out for Las Vegas. May they have numerous 100+ degree games in their new home. I was a diehard Raiders fan as a kid (even managed to attend their 1976 Super Bowl win) but when they moved to LA in 1982, they lost me. That was the one team I didn't care much about when they were back in Oakland. Besides, they ruined the Oakland Coliseum with the expansion they demanded.

If I had to pick a worst Bay Area franchise, I'd probably say the San Jose Earthquakes. Their wining seasons are fairly few and far between.

The A's are a farm club for the rest of MLB. Billy Beane is a genius at spotting and developing talent for the teams willing to pay for it.

Having to memorize the roster each season is ridiculous. Some creeper like Larry Ellison would spend passionately if he owned the A's.

I am so happy for BoMel that he was able to get the F out of Dodge.*

True.

It's difficult for the average fan (let alone Little Leaguer who attends games with his Mom and Dad) to have to memorize the roster each season given all of the guys that Billy Beane sends packing. This is not how you evoke brand loyalty.

Like I said earlier, ownership treats the Oakland A's like a commodity based business.
It's pathetic.

My A's story:

Former A's pitcher Danny Haren bought a house down a court over my backyard fence (200 yards away) when he played for the A's at a salary of $750K. He moved when he got traded to the Angels and got a $12M annual raise. I said hello to him when we were walking our dogs. He was painfully shy. I did speak to his wife. She was very nice.

Haren put our neighborhood on the map for the A's. I have a buddy that has a house on the same court where Haren lived. When he was single, he rented his house to Seth Smith when he was an A; and then to Jon Lester and Barry Zito when the A's "rented" those pitchers for the playoffs. I never saw any of those guys.

My buddy said the rent was way north of market so he moved to a hotel during those periods a cleaned up financially.

Chaparro Court in Walnut Creek.
At the end of Walnut Boulevard, East of Mountain View Blvd. Some very cool Open Space back there.

Backside of Whitecliff Way in Rudgear Estates.
I lived off Palmer in the 60's.

The A's have been pretty good on the field, but leaving the Raiders out of it it's pretty tough competition I'm the Bay. The Giants won two titles, like you said (and another just outside the 10 year window). The Warriors won a bunch. The 49ers got to two Super Bowls and almost got back again last season. Even the Sharks got to a Stanley Cup Final.

The A's haven't been able to get over the hump like that, not even close really (no further than the Division Series since 2006).

It only became a dump when Al Davis was allowed to rape the city of Oakland for PSL fees that came out of policing, education, and library budget. And, oh, he built that monstrous wall that ruined the building for what it was.

It's really interesting to think about what fans prefer and why. The Giants have had some great postseasons since 2010 but a number of atrocious years which were terrible for fans. This past season was awesome for fans up until game 5 of the NLDS. First division title since 2012 which means they have rarely been in first place in their division.

The A's have only won one more division title during that time frame but a lot less time at the bottom of their division, and far less postseason success. Maybe some fans prefer that more consistent winning, albeit with less postseason success. There's something to be said for really enjoying the summer with a team that is playing pretty well.

Before the Dodgers finally got their first title in 30+ years recently, they had won 8 straight division titles. They were terrible in the postseason given their regular season performance but my Dodgers friends told me they enjoyed the fact that their team was in first place for most of the regular season and that the playoffs were overrated. Again, it all depends on what you really care about.

I wouldn't give up the Giants 3 titles for anything but I'm also not going to pretend like 2021 wasn't a fun season. It wasn't as fun as 2010/2/4 but a hell of a lot better than 2020.

You need the Big Ticket players to do well in the playoffs because those players are usually clutch and that is why they are making bank.

The A's trade those type of players away when they are young and their contracts are coming up.

I would like to throw a pie in Dave Kaval's face.

There have been some other "fun seasons" for the Giants in that time. They were in contention with winning records in 2011 and 2015, and also made the playoffs in 2016. That gives the fans something to cheer for even if you don't get to the World Series. They were also "in contention" until the end in 2020, but given the short COVID season and expanded playoff it's debatable how much that means.

If it had been all terrible teams in between 2010 and now then that would be one thing, but they've still been mostly good.

Sure, that's one view. But the other view is that this was the first season they won 90 games since 2012 and they had 4 straight losing seasons before this one. Even at their best when they were winning 3 world series in 5 years the fact that it was torture was part of the appeal. Some people might prefer regular season success without titles to titles without regular season success. To each their own.

The A's have been pretty good on the field, but leaving the Raiders out of it it's pretty tough competition I'm the Bay. The Giants won two titles, like you said (and another just outside the 10 year window). The Warriors won a bunch. The 49ers got to two Super Bowls and almost got back again last season. Even the Sharks got to a Stanley Cup Final.

The A's haven't been able to get over the hump like that, not even close really (no further than the Division Series since 2006).

IMO for most fans titles mean a ton. Especially if you haven't had any in a while. Flags fly forever and all that.

The Giants used to draw crap down at Candlestick.
It's amazing to me how their attendance suddenly became a phenomenon to be at the new park.

Granted, Oakland is no SF, but if they could put a park at the center of transit hubs (which the current plan does not really do) they could have a very nice little gig.
It's all in the planning.

At this point it's going to be hard for the A's to reach the Giants' level of popularity in the region, but . . . there's plenty of money and people in the Bay Area, so there's no reason they have to keep operating like a "small market" club. Other teams that share a market and are the secondary team in that market (Mets, White Sox, Angels) don't behave that way. It's the current ownership that chooses to live on the cheap.

An owner willing to spend money isn't the whole story.

The Knicks and Mets have spent money and have nothing to show for it.

Ditto the Angels and the Clippers who both made some big splashes in free agency but haven't accomplished much as a result.

All things considered the A's are doing pretty good.

I like how Donald Sterling ran the clippers.
He had a low payroll, not designed to win but to make a profit based mainly on shared league revenue (tv) rather than his inept home arena ticket sales.

If the A's owners can profit without taking risk of spending, why not???

Born at Alta Bates raised in North Oakland. Rickey is #1 in my eyes. But I don't feel good about the politics involved (maybe if had some skin in the game I'd feel otherwise) too much shady stuff that nobody is even considering.

I'd rather they go to Portland… Vegas is the last place they need to be imo

Neither of those markets is ready to support Major League Baseball IMO. Portland couldn't even keep their minor league team. Vegas is a very small TV market by comparison to other MLB markets. That doesn't matter a ton for the NFL, since NFL TV revenue is all shared anyway, but local TV revenue is very important in MLB.

A's President Dave Kaval's answer the other day to the question why the A's keep trading away talent:

" Well, this is exactly why we need a new ballpark. … In order for us to retain our talent, to have a much higher payroll, we need higher revenues. That comes with a new fan-friendly facility and we just don't have that." SF Chronicle

…and if you believe that balderdash, Dave has some swamp land in Florida he would like to sell you.
I wouldn't buy a used car from a guy that looks and talks like he does.
