I suspect, given that the speaker is not a native speaker of English, that the word he used does not have the nuance that RWNJs want to assign to it.

But Republicans have never been very good at nuance. And confirmation bias is one of their core characteristics. Not surprised that the easily duped are all ginned up about this.
