Rivera has called Trump a "loyal friend" whom he supported for four years in office and accused "leftist creeps" of trying to destroy Trump at all cost. He praised Trump for his role in producing a COVID-19 vaccine and said it should be named after him. But Trump's baseless denial of his election defeat soured Rivera's loyalty.

He allowed that Trump stopped talking to him after Rivera declared the 2020 election over. Rivera has called out Fox News colleagues and Trump for amplifying the fraud claims leading up to the Capitol riot and blamed Trump for inciting the siege. He said shortly after the insurrection that it revealed a "dysfunction" in his friend that he had not seen.

For Rivera not to have seen that "dysfunction" he had to be willingly blind to it. Trump told us in 2016 he wouldn't accept election results unless he won and has always been a sore loser claiming that things were rigged against him. 2020 was nothing new.

As a teen, I used to enjoy watching his show. In the beginning he had a decent show with good topics. I believe he was fairly liberal back then. I guess money and fame eventually corrupts.

Yes I think he was liberal. And yes I think he was earnest. But he had an audience to fill, ratings to hit, and so the show's topics strayed into the bizarre or extreme. He knew he had to be salacious, edgy.

I don't know how it came to be that Fox was his employ, but I believe he morphed to fit the need, just like with his show, just like Lindsay Graham, Ted Cruz and all the others have bent like a willow.

So, you're right, money corrupts. Followers in the wrong deed.
The real problem, though, are the misguided leaders. Must cut off, punish, the head of the snake.

Trump created OPERATION WARP SPEED.

Not at first. I remember his show discussing serious topics in a reasonable way. Of course, not all of his shows were like that and he did later become Springer like. But the show I really liked was Phil Donahue. Now that was a great show.

Wikipedia says "Rivera had inadvertently launched a "no-news" form of news, where instead of reporting on news, entire programs were about possible and hypothetical news."

Sounds like a perfect fit for Fox. Just because Geraldo has been in the media for a long time doesn't mean we should re characterize him as something he isn't. He was perhaps the first mover in the war against substantive fact-driven news.

Well done, but the Capone piece was much later, and perhaps his Jump The Shark moment.

You're right, though! He's been chasing eyeballs 30x longer than he was ever "earnest" as I had suggested.

I remember Geraldo from 20/20 before he had his own show.

He was a pretty good investigative reporter before he launched his show and started slumming it along with Maury, Sally, Jerry, and Morton Downey.
