They think their skin color is what is holding them back and not the fact that they are uneducated hate-filled tools.
I often wonder how I've managed to survive in this country, being a white, heterosexual, college educated male. I mean, all the cards have basically been stacked against me since birth, right? I guess I attribute it to my intestinal fortitude, somehow managing to overcome one obstacle after another, against long odds.
Seriously, when some historically disadvantaged group asks for a larger piece of the pie and my first reaction is "Wait, does that mean my piece might be smaller?!?" I just think about the absurdity of the above... 'cause guys like me are going to be just fine, for goodness sake.
It's like when an older sibling complains about having to share with a younger sibling. "Before baby brother was born, I used to get everything and now I have to share. Life is so unfair." The child is expressing regret about the loss of an unearned privilege.
When you are used to getting more than your "fair share" of everything, an erosion of that unearned privilege can feel like an injustice if you don't have perspective.
A lot of Americans don't have perspective and are entitled, whiny and lazy. That wasn't a problem when they had minorities under their thumb and could flourish in mediocrity but it's ever so slightly less easy for them now. Or at least they perceive that to be the case. That's the driver of a lot of xenophobia in our country.
For what it's worth, this framing of the issue
doesn't tend to land well with the people we're talking about. They become defensive and make excuses. We've seen this play out time and time again on BI and I won't be surprise if this discussion follows the same pattern.
