When an immigrant or their offspring succeed in the USA, they aren't "leapfrogging" black people. Black poor immigrants are more successful than poor American black people. They are likely smart and putting in the hard work required to succeed in America. When you aren't smart or don't work hard, it is very difficult to succeed. It is logical to conclude that folks are reluctant to work hard when they are being told that life is unfair, and they deserve monetary reparations from the mistreatment of their ancestors.

He is an awkward son of an immigrant who had to earn his way. He didn't have the benefit of learning social graces. How many kids of first generation from lower middle class family have the social graces that seem acceptable to elite liberals and conservatives? Liberals say they want people to feel accepted just as they are without having to confirm but then allow implicit discrimination if someone does not have country club social graces.

He went to Yale on his own merit, graduated magna cum laude while on the baseball team and working as an electrician, served in the military, received medals, went to Harvard Law School (again with no benefit of legacy, etc.) and graduated cum laude.

He could have accumulated extreme wealth with those credentials, but he decided to pursue service in the military and then public office.

He has nothing close to the wealth of typical politicians, and did not enrich himself like Biden and others did with much inferior credentials.

He is awkward. So are many kids of first generation immigrants who came from low income families.

Would not vote for him now because of his political foot faults in bending the knee for Trump and running to the right of him when we needed a moderate, but the reasons people argue (stupid, awkward, etc.) are just elitist and ironic coming from those with inferior academic and professional accomplishments and demonstration of intelligence and nothing resembling liberal or progressive or inclusive thoughts. Instead, it betrays lingering idea of the WASPY graces that everyone still thinks are necessary to be accepted. I know how elitist (even among liberals) the Ivy League can be, and how excluded folks like me who did not go to boarding school. did not have membership in country club, did not know wine, etc., and did not develop country club social graces are made to feel.

I have a friend who I recently found out went to high school with him. She didn't mention him being brilliant but without bashing a kid I'll just say that what I heard was consistent with what we are seeing now. He doesn't have the strongest people skills.

Gavin Newsom isn't running for POTUS on a "Make America Florida" campaign. Newsom is mostly governing for the state and its residents whereas Desantis is clearly governing entirely to support his campaign. Almost nothing he is focused on is designed to solve problems that exist in Florida.

You are right on the immigrant side. Got confused on that point based on Trump's attacks on DeSantis and his Italian heritage. It was his great-grandparents who immigrated from Italy.

My point on Newsom is based on the tit-for-tat between Newsom and DeSantis and the fact that you wrote DeSantis is not doing a good job for Florida. Most people I speak to from Florida believe he has made their lives better. Not sure people say the same for Newsom. They definitely did not think he did as a mayor of San Francisco.
