Jimmy Buffett taught Americans to hate their jobs and live for nights and weekends so they could stuff themselves with food and alcohol. But pride in work is what gives Americans purpose and explains our success. Deaths of despair may be considered part of his cultural legacy.

How long before Richard Hoste starts posting in BI offtopic?
I follow some music reaction channels on YouTube. Lately I've seen a few start doing reactions to the most ridiculous right wing political and conspiracy theory videos. The really crazy out there stuff. Anything for more views, I guess. One of them was a Michelle is a man video. I unsubscribed from the channel and left a comment saying I couldn't stay subscribed to a channel that was putting these ridiculous videos in my YouTube recommendations. I didn't say I wouldn't watch his music videos. You should see the replies I'm getting from the crazies. "You're going to burn in Hell!" is about the mildest one. It reduces my faith in humanity.concordtom said:Okay - THAT was me laughing out loud!!!okaydo said:A man who claims he had sex with Barack Obama in 1999 tells his story.

Quote:
Every story of how an individual came to their political and social views has both a psychological and intellectual component. Recently, it's been revealed that over a decade ago I held many beliefs that, as my current writing makes clear, I now find repulsive.
My posts and blog comments in my early twenties encouraged racism, misogyny, misanthropy, trolling, and overall bad faith. Phrases like "racism" and "misogyny" get thrown around too easily, but I don't believe there's any doubt many of my previous comments crossed the line, regardless of where one thinks that line should be. Below, I'll offer an explanation for why I wrote such things, and why I no longer hold such views. But first it's important to discuss the nature of the recent journalistic attack and what it is trying to accomplish, and why I think it's likely to fail.
Quote:
When I try to reconstruct my emotional status and reasoning of 12-15 years ago, a few things stand out. First, there was the desire to just adopt a posture that was the polar opposite of those I considered political enemies. So if liberals lied a lot about race, I needed to speak "harsh truths," without much careful thinking about whether I was actually getting at truth or simply being similarly dogmatic. If they denied the overwhelming evidence in favor of heredity being important for individual outcomes, then I had to be a caricature of a geneticd eterminist. They required PC-speak, so my tone of course needed to be as offensive as possible. It's really that stupid, and thinking about my own history has made me extra sensitive towards noticing the flaws of others who seem to "reason" in a similar way.

I honestly don't give a sh*t. Whether he did or not does not change the good or bad in the policies and regulations he promoted. I generally liked Obama other than his lack of leadership on certain racial matters that divided instead of united the nation. And whether he did or did not have a male lover in the past does not change my view one iota.GoOskie said:Man, this is huge if true.
