This is where we are

"…before the match between Amador High, a mostly white school perched in the foothills southeast of Sacramento, and Rosemont High, a largely Black and Latino school tucked into the city's industrial eastern fringe, Amador officials abruptly called it off. Everyone would have to leave. And to make sure they departed safely, the police department in the bucolic tourist town of Sutter Creek had called in reinforcements from the Amador County sheriff's department and other agencies."

We are (still) a very racist and ignorant country.

It's pathetic.

Diablo, I take issue with your statement. While there is racism in this country, the country itself (as a whole) is not racist. That's not to downplay where there may be pockets, but they are an aberration in relation to the populace as a whole

And I don't know what is behind the situation here. But are you certain that racism was involved, or are you jumping to a conclusion because of your inability to see things without looking through color?

I may have missed some details, so please understand I'm writing this without more information than has been provided in this thread.

Yes, you're clearly missing some details that are easily found in the article posted by the OP.

It would appear that you didnt bother to read the article(s)

The first incident, in March, involved an El Dorado Hills' Oak Ridge football player taunting a Buchanan High soccer player with ape sounds. Last week, Amador High canceled its varsity football season because of a Snapchat group named "Kill the Blacks." Last week, River Valley in Yuba City canceled its Friday game with Woodcreek after a TikTok video created by players included a mock slave auction.

I would be curious if there is any truth to the allegation that the group name had nothing to do with race. I am skeptical that it is not racist or, at the very least, complete ignorance.

This is going get out of hand real quick and I suspect this thread will be removed! If anyone reads the articles and deems the incidents NOT to be racism then you are part of the problem! Mock slave auctions are not funny, kill the blacks, ape gestures are not the case of teenagers just having fun!

Tom racism is very much alive and well in this country, maybe you should remove your blinders and see the truth!

READ WHAT I WROTE! I didn't say there is no racism. I said the country is not racist, and it is not. There is racism in some places with some people (some of it coming against whites by the way). So don't give me any crap about blinders or anything else. I expressed an observation, period. And comments on threads constitute a place where people can opine......unless you want to shut down more free speech.

As for the article, I indicated I had not read the article. If what the article claims is true, then it is despicable behavior, and needs to be addressed.

Anyone else want to try some misrepresentation?

If what you're saying is that not every single white person in America is racist, that is correct.

However, saying that the country "isn't racist", and then saying that there is racism against white people, shows such a lack of understanding of systemic racism, as well as how power works, that your opinion is useless.

That's my opinion, anyway.

Sadly there's is a lot, too much, racism in this country, to say and believe that's only "some" racism is too view the country with blinders on and if that offends you then, I'll say it again, you need to remove your blinders!

We are living in a highly emotional world that goes way beyond any debate on whether or not to keep/ fire Wilcox, there are really dark parts to this world and racism is a major part of that darkness and I truly wish it was not!

Tom, I believe you are referring to only overt, expressed, hostile, racism.

Unfortunately, racism itself, the unscientific belief in the inherent existence of "races" and/or the arbitrary categorizing of human beings based on "race" is at the core of the way this country was organized for 500 years. It's ongoing negative effects are systemic and pernicious. We cannot even have a discussion about it without resorting to racist terms as you did saying "whites are sometimes the victims of racism." It is the ocean we swim in.

Not all racism is hostile. If you say "Asians are good at math," that is a racist statement. The broadway show "Avenue Q" had a great song "Everybody's a Little Racist Sometimes." The idea being that we often have a racist thought pop into our heads. The key is to be able to recognize it in ourselves as well as others and dismiss it or call it out and correct it. Many Americans are unable to. My ex-boss CEO of a large company, once told me "The Blacks should be for Trump, because Mexicans are taking the jobs Black people should be doing." I tried to explain to him the many wrong (racist) assumptions in that statement but he couldn't get it. He also couldn't understand why he kept losing his best employees that did not look like him.

Whatever is going on here is not the 1980s Sacramento I grew up in. I bounced around 7 area schools before high school in every neighborhood from Del Paso to Antelope to Highlands to Roseville to Grass Valley. Something has changed recently in our culture that is making kids behave like this and making racism a thing.

Amador High might call it a match - like in tennis or lacrosse- but in the rest of the country we call it a game.

The 500-year "systemic" argument is one theory. As noted by Dr. Thomas Sowell (Stanford) and Dr. Walter Williams (George Mason University), African Americans made strong progress for 100 years after the 13th Amendment was passed. Then after numerous social and welfare policies were passed in the 1960s, economic progress slowed, and the traditional Black family was decimated. Inner city schools, many run by liberals, went downhill. A third contributing factor was increasing union and government requirements on big business, driving many heavy industry jobs overseas. Countless large factories closed, eviscerating the economic base of the communities. A chicken and egg scenario then developed with inner city riots, spurring "white flight" to the suburbs. Drug use also exploded into the mix.

All of the cited actors in these three ugly incidents are under 18. It's well-known that the prefrontal cortex development doesn't fully develop until 25 years of age. I don't generalize the standing of 330 Million people based upon a group of Covid-locked-down 15-year-old jocks. To the ignorant youths who made derogatory sounds or conducted an ugly, reprehensible skit, suspend or ban them, but not the whole team. The ugly online thread is really troubling, and we're handicapped by a lack of information.

It is correct that President Trump's policies and decisions led to the lowest unemployment rate ever recorded for African-, Latino-, Asian-, and female Americans.

FIFY

Trump ended with the worst jobs record of any modern president. He inherited the longest sustained period of economic growth in U.S. history but ended with much higher unemployment than he started with. Citing his mid term numbers would have made Herbert Hoover look like a good jobs president.

It was Governor Cuomo who refused to acquire ventilators for years despite multiple warnings, and failed to buttress weak hospital systems in NYC. President Trump supplied ventilators in record time, enacted Warp Speed, and provided a military hospital ship for NYC. NYC Democrats refused to use the ship, and instead released infected seniors back into nursing homes and underreported nursing home deaths, all while preening for the cameras and having a book ghost written.

In California, Governor Schwarzenegger had created two large, mobile emergency hospital units with beds, ventilators, etc. Governor Brown sold and gave it away. (Los Angeles Times) In contrast, Governor Ron DeSantis set up emergency strike teams to swarm problematic locations and concurrently fast-tracked freeway work while lockdowns were in place. (Win win.)

Your knowledge base is terribly poor.

"Ron Klain, White House Ebola response coordinator under the Obama administration, took issue with the characterization of the travel restrictions as a travel "ban."

"We don't have a travel ban," Klain said. "We have a travel Band-Aid right now. First, before it was imposed, 300,000 people came here from China in the previous month. So, the horse is out of the barn."

"There's no restriction on Americans going back and forth," Klain said. "There are warnings. People should abide by those warnings. But today, 30 planes will land in Los Angeles that either originated in Beijing or came here on one-stops, 30 in San Francisco, 25 in New York City. Okay? So, unless we think that the color of the passport someone carries is a meaningful public health restriction, we have not placed a meaningful public health restriction."

Indeed, on Jan. 24, a week before the travel restrictions, the CDC confirmed two cases of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. from people who had returned from Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began.

Furthermore, Klain said, the import of goods from China is exempt from the travel restrictions, "and, of course, the people who fly the planes and drive the boats that bring those goods from China. We couldn't ban that activity. We vitally need that. Ninety percent of the antibiotics in this country come from China. All kinds of vital medical supplies … we will use to treat people. So, travel bans … that's not what we're imposing, that's not what exists."

I challenge anyone in this thread to define "systemic" from your own knowledge and not after looking it up in some political tract. And, cite the systems in our country that operate systemically racist. Not did, but do so now. With evidence.

This country has been working to eliminate racist practices since at least 1787...further back if you count abolitionism. All in the face of racist backlashes from Reconstruction to the Great Society...practiced by...

What's going on now has nothing to do with the elimination of racist behavior, but rather the leverage of racism accusations to gain and keep political power. It's getting more desperate and, therefore outlandish, because more and more people of all races are recognizing the ploys that these accusations of the radial few represent.

Don't let yourself be guilt-tripped into accepting every name flung your way.

Exactly. Trump banned Chinese citizens from coming to the US, but brought back thousands of Americans from China with no testing or quarantine.
