Dumbest question: "What was his motive?!?"

Only two possible reasons knowing his motive might be important; 1) to satisfy our morbid curiosity (legitimate)... and/or... 2) if he is working with others to do more of this s_ _ _ and we could catch them before they act (unlikely)

Otherwise, you want to know his motive? It was some combination of the following...
- he's nuts
- he hated Trump
- he wanted to impress Jodie Foster

The only question is, what percentages of each of the above. But does it matter if it was 80%/19%/1%? Or 35%/45%20%? What effing difference does it make?!?

When an outlet like ratings-seeking CNN poses that stupid question like the answer actually carries some big importance, it only serves to legitimize a heinous act like this. It's bs.

That said, I do sorta wonder what his motive was... and why, in 2024, Jodie Foster?

Travis Bickle's motivations for being a political assassin were not clear either. He suffered from social alienation.

*I don't think they ever established a motive for the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. He fired more than 1,000 rounds, killing 60 people and wounding at least 413. The ensuing panic brought the total number of injured to approximately 867. Wikipedia

Honestly, finding out more about this poor guy makes me sad. Mostly for the other victim, but also for him. I hope the 1-2 injured people are doing okay.

I initially thought it a dumb question - like, "he wanted trump dead!"
But then I considered John Lennon's killer and he wanted Jodie Foster???
That's crazy. And there are crazy people. So who knows.

Does it really matter? Because, whatever it was, it was deranged. No?
This is why we need secret service staffing.

Not in jest at all. But outside of morbid curiosity (which I have as much as the next guy), why is it important? Or, at least as important as the media is making it out to be?

(In my original post, I did account for maybe learning if he is perhaps part of some network that may strike again.)

Does anybody think there might be more to this than some combination of being nuts and hating Trump? (the Jodie Foster part was in jest... see Reagan 1981). Is it important to know in what sense he was nuts, or exactly why he hated Trump?

Bottom line, it's not "dumb to try and find out" because people are naturally curious, but dumb to attach "importance" to it, which the media seems to be doing (I get it, they're telling a story for ratings.).

I reason that establishing a motive is essential in any criminal act. Helps with the investigation, to understand why it was committed, and to help prevent it in the future. I never would've imagined the idea of establishing motive was something contentious. But I'm an internet nobody, unlike you who seems to know everything there is to know.

The only motive that is relevant is that he intended to kill. What drove that intention is not relevant in establishing crime. Even if he did not intend to kill, if he showed reckless disregard for human life or someone died in the commission of another crime, that is sufficient for murder.

Writing that he is a conservative is bizarre. Why would someone on the far right try to kill Trump?

The bottom line is that it takes someone beyond crazy to think killing is the right answer. And people like him should not have access to guns. But that epiphany will never be had by the fervent gun fanatics.

What should be obvious is that, like here and the rest of the country, thinking the other side is evil and you are good instead of thinking that you disagree on opinion on what is best for the country, you are part of the problem.

It's a sad, sad story for him and for his parents. I can't imagine what would drive someone to do what he did but then again, the reports were that he was bullied every day. Like someone mentioned to me yesterday, hurt people hurt people.

As the "Democrat Party" is now the party of the educated elite (read that somewhere), I seriously doubt that any of us would misuse the word "literally" like that. Instead, we would say something like, "Trump is not Hitler, but the two do share some disturbing similarities."

No he doesn't.

Vance wrote privately to a Facebook friend in 2016:

"I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical ******* like Nixon who wouldn't be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he's America's Hitler."

Possible, but unlikely. You don't get it. Are you purposely twisting things? Is it because you hate Trump?

The problem isn't necessarily the media. The problem is its audience is stupid and seeks confirmation bias, as demonstrated by your false conclusion.

So, which is true:

1) Vance thinks Trump is literally worse than Hitler, an existential threat to our democracy (which you stated here); or

2) Vance thought in 2016, prior to Trump's first presidency, that Trump might be America's Hitler, which Vance himself expressed in a private Facebook message in 2016?

I, along with about 150 other boys in my childhood Boy Scout Troop, shot rifles each and every year at scout camp and other places. Funny, none of us grew up to be killers.
