Oh, I just remembered I have now met TWO people who were in Breaking Away. There I was shoveling snow off the roof of our Sierra lodge a few years ago when I got to talking to a fellow shoveler I hadn't met before. We were chatting and I happened to mention that although I like the snowy winters and I ski a little bit, my true love is coming up in the summer to mountain bike the Donner Pass area. Told him cycling is my #1 activity.
He then asked, "Do you know 'Breaking Away'?" I said of course I did, and it was formative in my youth. He then went on to say he was a student at Indiana when the film was made and participated as an extra during the racing scenes. I was very impressed! Thereafter I met a woman a year or so later who was also an extra in the movie. Kinda cool if you ask me.

It's on my movie top ten list.* I feel so lucky that my father brought it my attention way back when. He said to the family one day, "Hey, Siskel & Ebert really liked this new coming-of-age movie. Let's all go see it." So we did. He loved it for the family dynamics and humor (as did I). But I loved it for the riding! And thereafter I was smitten with all things bicycle. Despite spending my childhood first on a Schwinn** 20" and then early teenage years on a Mongoose BMX, tearing up the neighborhood and being a degenerate on it, the movie prompted me to beg dad for a road bike. He relented and I became the proud owner of a Raleigh Super Course. I rode that bike everywhere.
One of the middle school bullies saw that I rode a lot. He was big, strong and pretty mean to all of us. I guess he felt he could further assert his dominance over me by beating me in a bike race after school. Although intimidated, I was also kind of intrigued, so I agreed. I had no idea how I "measured up," so I went for it. We met after school at the Alpha Beta and picked a starting and finishing line. "GO!" he shouted and we were off. I cranked the pedals as hard as I could and after 20 or 30 seconds, I realized he was nowhere in sight. Dang, I blew his doors off!
If memory serves, I sheepishly rode home without talking to him. I assumed he'd be TOTALLY PISSED at me and want to pummel me for totally embarrassing him. I did NOT look forward to school the next day. But this was a learning experience for me. Instead of beating me up the next day, he actually was nice to me. And he never really mistreated me from that day forward. I learned that I had earned his respect. (I never boasted or rubbed his face in my beating him, which probably helped too.)
I credit "Breaking Away" with giving me the motivation, devotion and love for cycling that led me to that day wit he bully from school.
And that's not all, but I won't bore you all to tears. Sorry I went around the bend here, but I just couldn't resist.
* Watched it a few months ago after not seeing if for AGES. I must admit I'm sad to say it hasn't aged that well.
** Kinda proud to say I've briefly spoken on the phone with Richard Schwinn, great grandchild of the company's founder.

Awww, thank you. Racing with Cal Cycling was an amazing experience... something that "Breaking Away" prepared me for WAY before I had ANY idea I'd be racing in the peloton proudly wearing the Blue & Gold.concordtom said:TandemBear said:Not only have I seen it, it's what cemented my life-long love of cycling!LudwigsFountain said:If you haven't seen Breaking Away, give it a shotTandemBear said:
