I like burbons, Knob Creek and Makers 46 are in my rotation, but CA whites suck, period. I love Rutherford cabs (caymus etc) but these wines are way overpriced and a bad value, you can get half a case of pretty good Cahors or Nero d'Avolas for the price of one bottle of Caymus.

I guess it's a matter of personal taste, I'm not into the "buttery" CA Chardonnay style, in a pinch I would go for fume' blancs like Grgich but for non-French Sauvignon blancs I like NZ Marlboroughs. Sancerre for splurges. For everyday whites, with fish, it is Cotes de Gascogne, superb value even as imports, same varietals used to make armagnacs and cognac (Colombard, Ugni blanc), around $10-$20 per bottle, one of the best value in French wines.
