This deserves its own thread.

This guy nails it, excellent summary of the nature of Deepseek and its landmark disruption of the business world:

AI is about to become a lot more accessible, and a lot less expensive. The question isn't if this will disrupt the current players, but how fast.

The only thing that will be holding China back from the US auto market is tariffs.
But the USA always felt smug that it was superior in high tech. Now, that has to be questioned.
And once that is accepted, well, didn't I have a thread called something like "Say Goodbye to the US Dollar" ?

Guy on CNBC says he was playing with Deepseek all weekend. You can run it on a laptop, he said.
I just went to Deepseek.com
Someone here should check it out and report back.

As we track Deepseek's impact on the market today, this news blip came out last week.

Nancy Pelosi and Tempus - it's a a Health AI company that went up big time last week. I say it because it's in the AI space.

I've seen claims that like TikTok, DeepSeek gathers data about users and sends it back to China. I don't know if it's true, but it seems wise to keep our military from using it until it's been determined if it's gathering data.

TikTok's servers are run by Oracle's cloud network, their data is in the US. The main reason TikTok was banned is because it wasn't as heavily censored as Facebook or Instagram, with users being exposed to what is really going on in Gaza.

The stuff collected by DeepSeek as described above (IPs, device info, user patterns) is standard info stored in the cookies of most websites you will visit or use.

Google and other sites already spy and gather all information- are they less a threat than China. Debatable, I think and tied to a political agenda

Troubling overreach by OpenAI:

"People are rightly ridiculing OpenAI over its accusations of Deepseek using their output to train their model, but most people are missing the truly terrifying implications here. The far more worrying aspect here is that OpenAI is suggesting that there are some cases in which they own the output of their model. Now think for a minute what this means in the world of tomorrow where so much will be generated by AI (and already is): all the software code, the emails we send each others, the videos and images, etc.

Do you want to live in a future where, if for some reason the AI giants are dissatisfied with the way you use the output of their model, they can claim ownership of it? A future where every piece of content touched by AI - which might be virtually everything in the world of tomorrow - comes with invisible strings attached?

The implications for innovation and creativity are staggering. Small businesses and independent developers who rely on AI tools could find themselves trapped in a web of intellectual property claims. Worse, we're looking at a future where the very act of learning and building upon existing knowledge becomes gated by the interests of AI giants.

This would be techno-feudalism on steroids: if we don't challenge this now, we risk sleepwalking into a future where human creativity and innovation become the property of a bunch of AI overlords, and a world where they can dictate not only who gets to innovate, but what kind of progress is acceptable based on their own interests."

Very true but that's another reason to adopt Chinese if true. Less huge data centers with attendant electrical and water use. The fact that private companies are commissioning small nuclear plants to power these tells you what a sink they are.

Right, Deepseek can run on a high-end PC, effectively slashing the need for GPUs and energy to perform AI by a factor of hundreds.
