Jack Ma was placed under house arrest for several months by the Chinese government after he suggested that the Chinese financial system should be run differently, and his voting rights in the Ant Group (Alibaba, Alipay) were slashed from 50% to 6%. Basically the CPC sent a strong message to Chinese oligarchs that they should stay out of politics.

Alipay processes nearly $20 trillion in transaction volume annually, almost all in China. If China were run like the US, Jack Ma would have had the wealth and power of Musk and Bezos combined and would have wielded tremendous political power and influence in China.

Ideally, there should be guardrails in a healthy democracy between government and local or foreign oligarchs and the financial industry, because their interests and those of citizens don't always (often?) converge.

Ironically here, the rise of China as an industrial behemoth was greatly facilitated by Wall Street pushing for outsourcing.

No he was only on house arrest for a few months. He's out and about but keeping out of politics.
