I'm convinced now that I've had time to think about it, yes, his kiss, arm wave, salute was intentionally a dance on the line.
He's being playfully provocative in order to see what he can get away with.
Elon may very well end up dying doing something stupid that could have been avoided. Something like driving too fast in his roadster, blasting off in a rocket creation, OD'ing on some novel substance he takes for productivity enhancement, or saying the wrong things to the wrong crowd without ample security.
I'm not predicting it - just saying, it wouldn't be unforeseeable. He pushes the edge of what is possible. It makes him great in many ways. But the same people that push greatness forward also sometimes push toward folly.
