The cut in nih indirect overhead (get ready for the same in nsf) if it stands will create a an 8 or even 9 figure hole in uc's budget. I can not over emphasis the risk to research universities if this moves forward.

I would be surprised if this can be applied to existing contracts.

This article was brought to you by Politico, funded through USAID, funded by taxpayer money, discovered and brought down by some guy named Big Balls.

I've had far less political threads removed and even then the guy claiming "politico is funded by USAID" is parroting a proven lie propagated by a right wing extremist.

Is this the same NIH that's supported by US taxpayers along with USAID that helped to fund EcoHealth Alliance that helped to fund gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology where the Covid-19 virus leak occurred?

Yes it does (or they are going to try)
Of course they are going to try but these are signed contracts between the government and institutions. The indirect costs are negotiated between the government and the institution so I am sure this is headed to court.

BTW, it would be interesting to see what the indirect cost % is for space-x. I would bet it's much higher than 15%.

Woke? What the heck does biomedical research have to do with "woke"? This looks like it will have a huge blow to scientific research at all/most universities.

So play this out. The universities sue, maybe win, maybe it is appealed all the way to the Supreme Court and miraculously they rule in favor of the universities. Trump still illegally orders the government not to pay but the same Supreme Court ruled he is immune from prosecution for illegal acts. Theoretically, the GOP controlled House and Senate could impeach him if they wanted to and had the courage to but they are MAGA controlled now.

If you are curious about how indirect costs work, you can watch this short video:

Cal's indirect cost rate is about 62%. Trump is following Project 2025's playbook exactly by cutting the indirect cost rate for all universities to 15%. This would result in a loss of 10s of millions of dollars to Cal annually. This sudden loss of funds will devastate all research universities, research institutes and medical schools. It is likely that Trump will try to same thing for other federal funding agencies like NSF.

Here are some of the benefits of our country's investment in biomedical research through NIH.

Here you can see what NIH funding brings just to the state of California.

Most universities being effected have huge endowments and so those should be shrinking to pay for any loss of revenue or rising costs.

False about the large endowments. This will hit public universities mostly with minimal endowments, and medical schools, in red and blue states very hard, and even most privates with large endowments don't have endowment funds that can be rebudgeted
