"The rate of undergoing a gender-affirming surgery with a TGD-related diagnosis was 5.3 per 100000 total adults compared with 2.1 per 100000 minors aged 15 to 17 years, 0.1 per 100000 minors aged 13 to 14 years, and 0 procedures among minors aged 12 years or younger (Figure 1). Of gender-affirming surgical procedures identified among adults and minors, 1591 of 2664 (59.7%) and 82 of 85 (96.4%) were chest-related procedures, respectively."

A family member works at our state's lone medical university, which also happens to be a major center for performing sex change operations (they publish that in 2016 they performed 12.5% of all such surgeries, with > 50% of patients coming from out of state). They now have children's clinics dedicated to gender dysphoria. Treatment starts as early as 10. It is important to remember that treatment includes puberty blockers before surgery.

That family member started their career with this field being an area of specialty some 30 years ago (their very first surgical procedure). My recollection is there was no such thing as child surgeries at all. Those who had gender change surgeries were definitely adults; there was a structured psychological evaluation component, and not all were approved (after all these years I still recall a particular denial). Our family is not as connected to this practice any longer but from afar it appears that the practice has changed substantially.

Finally! Numbers about the scope of gender affirming surgeries!

I'll do a little math here for California. Census data says California has roughly 40 million people and 13% are in the 10-19 age group. That comes to about 5.2 million in that age group which I will simplify to 520,000 at each age from 10 to 19. Your statistics say 2.1 per 100,000 in the age group 15-17 had gender surgery. With 1.56 million in the 15-17 age group, that comes out to about 33 gender affirming surgeries among 15-17 year olds in California.

Doing similar math for the 13-14 age group (1.04 million) at a rate of 0.1 per 100,000, I get 1 gender affirming surgery in the 13-14 age group.

The US population of 340 million is about 8.5 times that of California. At similar rates, we are talking about 280 gender affirming surgeries among 15-17 year olds nationally and about 9 in the 13-14 year old age group.

While I'm not in favor of gender affirming surgeries among minors, the numbers for California and nationally are pretty underwhelming. Certainly not matching the amount of teeth gnashing going on.
