the new Biden book

I can't stop thinking about the Biden thing today. Saw two interviews with Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson last night, regarding their new book "Original Sin", the longest interview being a full episode of Washington Week with the Atlantic. I hardly ever do this, but I broke down and ordered the book today.

One of their main observations from interviewing over 200 people was that Biden experienced significant decline in 2023 and 2024, that the first-two-years Biden was largely capable of being President, but not so by the end of his term.

Some observations:

1. If the opponent hadn't been Trump, this "existential threat to democracy", maybe insiders would have done something earlier, but they didn't want to risk rocking the boat. They probably figured, okay, let's just babysit him through the election; Trump has so much baggage now that no way that many people will vote for him. After that, if Biden needs to resign, we will still have our Dem in there, who at least will be better than Trump.

2. The mindset sort of reminded me of the lead up to the Iraq War and, to a lesser extent Ukraine, where far too many leaders think it's time to stop asking fundamental questions and just get on board.

My one huge question which was not really asked by Jeffrey Goldberg:

Who could have gotten Biden to not run in, say, late 2023 and why the hell didn't they?

- the authors mentioned names of people in Biden's inner circle. Names which I did not recognize, except for Ron Klain (who was not one of the first names mentioned). Half the reason I'm buying the damn book is to find out who these idiots are!

I halfway give Biden himself a pass, due to his condition and Presidential hubris.

I halfway give Jill Biden a pass, because loyal spouse. Note I said "halfway". She's still Lady Freaking MacBeth to me.

I mostly give Kamala Harris a pass because the VP's main job is to support the President. The last thing she wants to do is knife her boss in the back, even if it's the right thing to do.

For this reason, I sort of give people in his Cabinet a pass. Sort of.

I also sort of give Nancy Pelosi a pass because she was finally the one who put her foot down, albeit six months too late.

But where were the party insiders, the ones who are super-connected and know how to pull all the levers of power? People whose names I may not even know because they are so deep inside? Those people do exist. And then there are Obama and Bill Clinton. I guess they didn't want to disrespect a fellow fraternity brother? Great job, guys.

Don't tell me these insiders didn't know what was going on because Biden was secluded from their view. That very fact would be enough to send up red flags. In the year-long lead-up to an election, this stuff is all they're thinking about!

Fascinating stuff. Our grandkids will be reading about this story.

Anyone that covered for Biden was wrong as is anyone that covers for Trump. Both men, in their best day, were dumb as turnips. It gets worse when you add old age into the mix.

Biden still has one advantage over Trump. Despite his senility, Biden still has the ability not to share, real time, every thought as it drifts through the chicken pudding he has left for a brain. Trump lets it all out there. His supporters only watch and read Right Wing media so the insane and senile material is strained out.

Trump's speech at West Point today corroborates these comments:

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Trump had the understanding of "a fifth- or sixth-grader."

White House chief of staff John Kelly called Trump "an idiot" and said he thought the president was "unhinged."

Both Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and former chief of staff Reince Priebus called Trump an "idiot."

Former economic adviser Gary Cohn said Trump was "dumb as sh@it," and former national security adviser H.R. McMaster said the president was a "dope."

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said in November 2017 that Trump was "like an 11-year-old child."

Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in July 2017 called Trump a "moron."

"(Trump's) understanding of global events, his understanding of global history, his understanding of US history was really limited. It's really hard to have a conversation with someone who doesn't even understand the concept for why we're talking about this.
-Rex Tillerson

*The only due I will give Trump is, like charlatans from time immemorial, he has a natural instinct for thieving from those that are as stupid and greedy as he is.

*It infuriated me that the Bidens let their German Shepherd continue to bite their Secret Service detail. How character defining do you reckon that is?
Her insisting to be called Dr. also p@issed me off. I have a JD but lawyers in California are prohibited from using the title "Doctor." Even if I could use the title, I just want to be called by my first name, bearister.

One of my business partners once gave me a litigation matter involving a client that was a chiropractor. The tw@t insisted that I address him as Doctor. I refused. He went ballistic. I returned the file to my partner and told him to reassign it to a litigator willing to call him doctor.

Finally, my complaints against the Bidens vs my complaints against Trump & Company is like comparing misdemeanors to felonies (or worse).

Trump's biggest asset is he's a great conman -- someone who can make his MAGA constituency support him regardless of what he says.

He's also great at abusing power (like a Mafia Don) to intimidate his personal "enemies": He has a dedicated civilian militia consisting mostly of domestic terrorists such as the "Proud Boys" and the "Oath Keepers" standing by to intimidate/punish and even kill his "opponents." This makes it difficult, for example, for journalists to directly call out his obvious lies and unprecedented corruption.

I give nobody in the inner or outer circle any benefit of the doubt. They spent 4 years talking about Trump and the 25th Amendment then literally had the actual need to use it right in front of them but didn't because of power. Some wanted the presidency over other Ds and all of them wanted the Presidency over Trump; they seemingly believed the existential threat talk. In short, they put themselves over country. Those that did eventually get Biden to drop did so not because he was mentally incapacitated but instead because they no longer thought he could beat Trump. That isn't heroism, it's craven power mongering and cowardice. I believe it is highly likely the inner circle ran the country when Biden was incapacitated during 2023 and 2024. See the movie "Dave", except this isn't comedic. People should be rotting in jail.

Right up until the debate where everything became obvious (to most everybody), my thought was, okay, he's obviously getting to be too old, especially to take on a four-year job that begins in January 2025. Let's say he was capable of fulfilling his duties in late 2023 / early 2024 (turns out he wasn't), you project out to 2027/2028 and, no, he shouldn't be running, duh.

It was like when Diane Feinstein, at age 104 or whatever, decided to run for one more 6-year Senate term, when she shouldn't have even been buying green bananas.

But a year ago, even somebody with my wisdom and expertise* didn't say that too loudly.

Biden has been toast for a while. It was clear to the average voter just as it was to someone who can read this board. Ironically- the "saving our democracy" nonsense turned around after the debate. Now voters doubted Biden could even effectively serve let alone be given a new term and, he, not Trump became a greater threat. At that point the con had nowhere to go but down

Just think, as evidenced by his West Point Speech, Trump is as out of it as Biden, but with one significant difference, Trump's surrounding cast is every bit as f@ucking stupid as he is. "What's habeas corpus?" MAGA!

Half of me is in favor of term limits and I guess now even age limits, but the other half -- my more libertarian side -- says let the people decide at the ballot box. But that is assuming that voters have full information. I know I would have voted for Biden if the election last year had been on June 26th, but shortly into the debate on the 27th, I knew he was toast... started a thread here that very night about it.

Certainly I am partisan, but I'm trying to examine this issue from a non-partisan POV (heck, there have been GOP candidates in this same situation... ones who got elected, but Biden has been the extreme case, in terms of Presidential candidates)...

Shame on Biden's inner-circle and also on the high-level Dem players and power brokers who could have done something in late 2023 , when there was still plenty of time. Again, this reminds me of the Iraq war, when way too many people refused to ask the fundamental questions... at least in public.

Trump's biggest asset is that he can do many, many, many norm-defying things and they never stick. It's the concept of more is less, less is more. He'll do many, many outrageous things, and it's like doing zero outrageous things. Whereas Biden could do a few outrageous things, and it's like he's done many outrageous things.

That's why Republicans love Trump. And it's why left-wingers should stop saying "if Obama did what Trump did, blah blah blah."

Each speech now is newsworthy because his mental state is riding the Big Dipper….just the going down track section from here out.

"President Donald Trump told graduates to avoid "trophy wives" during his commencement address at the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 24.

"He ended up getting a divorce, found a new wife. Could you say a trophy wife? I guess we can say a trophy wife," Trump said, referring to real estate developer Bill Levitt. "But that doesn't work out too well, I must tell you, a lot of trophy wives, it doesn't it work."

Apologies for responding to my own post...

Just dug up the thread I started last June 27th. Interesting to see the perspectives. Also noted that bear2034, only about six weeks ago, posted a clip on the thread that answered one of my questions. Somehow, I had missed that...

Biden's "inner circle" that shielded his worsening state:

Mike Donilon
Steve Bruschetti
Anita Dunne

I think these are the same people that Tapper/Thompson name. I am not enough of a political junkie to have ever heard of them.

Proof of "Dave"
====
A former aide to President Joe Biden said White House staff felt justified doing "undemocratic things" in order to stop the "existential threat" that was Donald Trump.

Axios reporter Alex Thompson revealed on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Bream that White House insiders revealed to him they often viewed themselves as the decision makers in the Biden administration and were shielded from the president's oversight.

If you believe and I think a lot of these people do sincerely believe that Donald Trump was and is an existential threat to democracy, you can rationalize anything, including sometimes doing undemocratic things," Thompson said.

Another aide also reportedly told Thompson that former President Biden "just had to win, and then he could disappear for four years."

"He'd only have to show proof of life every once in a while," Thompson said the aide told him. "His aides could pick up the slack."

Trump's Memorial Day message:

" HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY THROUGH WARPED RADICAL LEFT MINDS, WHO ALLOWED 21,000,000 MILLION PEOPLE TO ILLEGALLY ENTER OUR COUNTRY, MANY OF THEM BEING CRIMINALS AND THE MENTALLY INSANE,THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE, AND THROUGH JUDGES WHO ARE ON A MISSION TO KEEP MURDERERS, DRUG DEALERS, RAPISTS, GANG MEMBERS, AND RELEASED PRISONERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, IN OUR COUNTRY SO THEY CAN ROB, MURDER, AND RAPE AGAIN ALL PROTECTED BY THESE USA HATING JUDGES WHO SUFFER FROM AN IDEOLOGY THAT IS SICK, AND VERY DANGEROUS FOR OUR COUNTRY. HOPEFULLY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, AND OTHER GOOD AND COMPASSIONATE JUDGES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, WILL SAVE US FROM THE DECISIONS OF THE MONSTERS WHO WANT OUR COUNTRY TO GO TO HELL. BUT FEAR NOT, WE HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS OVER THE LAST 4 MONTHS, AND AMERICA WILL SOON BE SAFE AND GREAT AGAIN! AGAIN, HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY, AND GOD BLESS AMERICA! "

*Am I supposed to to try to be more understanding of the citizenry that thinks this message, viewed by the world, is ok? I'm pretty sure I have understood all of them from the beginning.

*Please explain to me why it is being paranoid to believe that a POTUS capable of generating this message is not also capable of imposing a totalitarian regime if he is convinced that the military will support him.
*Does this message cross a line/exceed the comfort level of any BI Trump supporter?
