1. Please go back in your imagination to 250,000 years ago.
During this time there were multiple variations of the genus Homo coexisting in various places:

Key Locations with High Homo Diversity

1. Africa
Homo sapiens
Homo naledi
Possibly H. heidelbergensis holdouts
Most dynamic region for early human evolution.

2. Southeast Asia
Homo erectus (Java)
Homo floresiensis (Flores)
Possibly Denisovans farther north in China

3. Central and East Asia
Denisovans in Siberia and Tibet
Neanderthals as far east as Uzbekistan

4. Europe & West Asia
Neanderthals
Denisovans (overlap zone)
Possibly late H. heidelbergensis

Being able to identify accurately your species among multiple similar genetic variants may have been important for your survival.


Exercise #2:
Ponder two neighboring chimpanzee tribes that fight one another. Why do they do this?
For control of breeding females.
For control of food resources.
To obtain alpha male status….

Whether we are talking about different species, different tribes, different races or different baseball teams, Stanford neuroscientist Robert Sapolsky has given numerous speeches/lectures on how it would be a survival tactic to immediately recognize the difference between an "us" and a "them". I have posted on this phenomenon MANY times here on BI.

Here are some Sapolsky clips talking about it, but the conclusion, I think, is that it's not RACE which is at the core but the organization of ourselves in our primate mind to form groups which we bond to. And that is evolutionary used as a survival tactic.

Man is not a solitary species like Tigers. We are not the fastest, the strongest, or with the biggest teeth. Alone, we die - eaten.
Together, we survived on the savanna. Together, we build cities, iPhones, and go to the moon. Together we became the dominant species on planet earth. Thus, we are social by nature, yet divisive by nature in other ways to ensure that our genes survive, and not that groups over there in the valley beyond the ridge.

We organize ourselves together for survival, and we fight with each other to ensure OUR (small us, not the greater us) survive.

In other words, it's instinctive, but not necessarily (as Sapolsky says) as Race per se.

Watches the last minute of this one where us vs them, which might initially appear to be instinctive as to Race, can be changed if only you wear a different baseball hat.







Sapolsky has other, longer talks about how our biological neurological, derived from our evolutionary past, impacts our behavior. I recommend exploring and learning, G4R.

But the thought excercise to engage in is why borth africans (or australian aborignees) not considered "black" (in the us)? Once you thibk that through you sgpuld see how it is a social construct. Or why are barrak and michelle obama "black" eveb thpugh their ethic herotages are very different

I have long said that this show does more for race relations than anything. Skip Gates shows how interconnected we all are, with white guests who have black ancestors and black guests who have white ones.

But take the case of Isa Ray, who had black slave ancestors who were owned by…. Free blacks.

Or consider Angela Davis, who is my cousin, as we are both descended from Mayflower hero William Brewster.

You may find this show to be as interesting, entertaining, and educational as I have. I recommend you become a regular viewer.
