About ten years ago, I stopped going to Smokehouse because they violated my Burger Rule #7 ("Onions shall be sliced and not chopped."), but then I started going back this year and I'm digging the place again, as are my kids. Go figure.

My first memory of the Smokehouse was about age five - probably 1960. I didn't go while a Cal student (was a Northside guy) but have been back a couple of times in the last few years. In the ever-changing panorama of Berkeley (Spengers, Cafe Venezia, Taiwan Restaurant, Edy's, Top Dog on Hearst all long gone), it's a stroll down memory lane - and a solid burger! My wife and now-adult kids loved it.

To be clear, Lynsi Snyder is moving her family from CA to TN.

That's about it.

First trip to 5 guys we saw the large fries were like 1400 calories.

Call us stupid but we didn't need to go back after seeing that. Don't care how good the burger may or may not be (it would have to be "one tasty burger")

The Ten Burger Rules of Big C could be the book of the year at the BI Bookstore and a sensation on TikTok

Damn, I'd better get off my azz and invent more rules than just #4 and #7! Don't get me wrong, I got ten or so burger rules loosely formed in my head, I just never formalized them... yet.

Wait, "BI Bookstore"? That doesn't sound too lucrative...

If you order 2 medium fries at 5 Guys you are going to get a paper bag completely full of fries with 2 medium size containers buried within. You will need to exercise restraint to avoid calorie overkill.

Pro tip: avoid 5 Guys if you are looking for healthy

Good riddance. Try Farmer Boys. It's way better.

Farmer Boys is a completely different business. In N Out is awesome.

They both serve food. I go to my Farmer Boys and there's an InNOut right next door. I moon them as I drive by.

Where can I find Farmer Boys and what are their burgers like?

The closest one to the BA is in Lodi.

Oh, Lord, stuck in Lodi again.

The article title and its tone are somewhat hyperbole, as I tried to point out. The move of the corporate headquarters (which is what really is the news) likely has more to do with their expansion back east, and their ability to control their roll out. The commentary about issues in CA and Snyder had more to do with a narrative to get clicks. Snyder may in very generally oversee the company, but the business is run by professional management, which now will be located in area where they are rapidly growing, back east. They are not expanding in California because they already have penetrated and control their segment of the market. It is interesting how with a fair amount of the media there is a constant narrative about California, though more through innuendo here.

IMO, INOut Burgers taste good due to condiments and freshness. The burger itself is just okay. Fries are meh, but they are supposed to be healthier with only one fry, rather than the double fry. Shakes are good.

The article indicates the are keeping their CA stores, but making a big expansion on the east coast.

The Habit burgers are pricey. average char burgers, bland and salty. They are expanding still in CA and a lot outside CA. IMO, they have good selections outside theirnburgers. Also, no mammoth lines lines like INOut.

I'm a huge Shake Shack fan - love their burgers.

I suggest you stop eating at these places, evaluating them for flavor and enjoyment.

The hamburger is OK, fries in beef tallow not all that bad, but the milk shake or even the soda in large quantities is what will get you.

Uh, I'll disagree.
All of that is part of the unhealthy SAD (Standard American Diet).

I used to like Smokehouse before hoop games.

First time I went to Smokehouse was in the late 60's. I worked the swing shift as a teamster in Emeryville, back when it was industrial, and during the summers moved lived back home in Pleasant Hill, subletting the apartment to save money. At that time the fastest way late at night to get to the 24 tunnel was straight up Woolsey. Would stop in for a late burger.

$25 burger as a menu item coming across the street from WC Gott's soon.

The info about diets is constantly changing. I remember a few years ago asking a gourmet food cart chef what they used for their fries, she said they used beef tallow, so I held out. Well it turns out that tallow is healthier than vegetable oils.

Red meat isn't unhealthy either, it is a source of many nutrients like taurine, which protects heart muscle

Part of the problem Americans have is portion control... and the good people from Corporate Food aren't helping, what with their super-sizing and all that.

I had one of those mini 7.5 oz. cans of Coke today. So what! I also had a giant mixed-greens salad. But what I won't do is get one of those 24 oz. cups of Coke they urge you to get at fast food.

When my kids and I get burgers (currently either Smokehouse or True Burger), we each get a burger, but we split one order of fries and one Coke three ways. Cheaper and better!

While healthy eating is beneficial, an excessive focus on food and diet can lead to restrictive behaviors, social isolation, and an undeserved sense of moral superiority about one's diet. My advise is get a life.

Extra virgin olive oil, carrots, cabbage, purple foods like purple onions and cabbage, sweet potatoes, orange squash, arugula, spinach, garlic....stuff that RFK Jr. likes. Garbonzo beans, the suff they use in hummus, have you tried cauliflower pizza where they substitue wheat flour with cauliflower? Delicious.

Tom, your thoughts?

I was a Giant Hamburger stan in San Pablo when I was high school(90s). The greasy burgers and cooked onions had me, but I loved the chili fries the most. The lettuce was usually soggy garbage though so I picked it off lol. I've heard their quality has went down big time, anyone else been to a Giant Hamburger in the bay recently? It as bad as I hear?
Cal88

It was never that good, Nation/Giant's main selling point was their late night hours and relatively nice dining area (for a fast food joint). Oscar's on northside was pretty good, char-gilled greasy burgers.

Agree on George's. Is the Russian place a couple of doors down a front? I used to suspect that of the now shuttered Casper's up the street. What did they used to sell, 2 or 3 dogs a day?

Eating is habitual, subconscious.
Lack of focus on habits passed down (again, SAD) gets people killed.

I'm not obese, but still I was diagnosed with cardiac artery disease years ago - like so many others.
I focus on diet in order to stay alive.

You're very pompous when you presume that this focus leads to restrictive behaviors, social isolation, and an undeserved sense of moral superiority.

Get a life, ha, yeah, that's what I'm working on. Life, as in Alive.

But you do you - keep eating your obesity-making foods. I tried to offer you some advice.

Will you also need to know some boundaries. Not that I need to explain myself, but the last couple years with arthritis and gout, I rarely eat red meat, and typically rely on plants protein on terms of limiting inflammation. That change in diet did result in some initial weight loss, but I don't diet, and I never have, and I'm not thin, and I do make exceptions when on a road trip. Never got the lecture about eating from doctors because I never had the medical conditions associated with unhealthy eating (I also exercise religiously). So imagine my surprise when some nut job I don't know starts lecturing me on eating better. You constantly mention a lot of personal stuff about people and yourself. Boundaries Tom, boundaries.

This is a thread about in and out. And then people start rating which place is better. So I simply chime in saying that the whole of it is poison, and offered some alternative healthy diet information.

…Well, of course you and I don't particularly like each other because you once got me banned. And then you lectured me about it on top of that. So then there's that. (And never mind that my prediction/warning was 1-2cm from coming true.)

Good job on the religious exercise! That's super important, and I need to do more of it. I hope your gout and arthritis situations go well.
