Yet the U.S. has an astonishing lack of maritime capacity. Of the tens of thousands of large vessels that dot the oceans, a mere 0.13 percent are built in the United States. China, by contrast, fulfills roughly 60 percent of all new shipbuilding orders and has amassed more than 200 times America's shipbuilding capacity.

Not only do most U.S. imports and exports travel on foreign-built ships, but those ships are owned and crewed almost exclusively by nine giant carriers based in Europe and Asia. By the end of 2024, these carriers had organized into three cartels that controlled about 90 percent of the U.S. containerized-shipping trade.

As long as we still lead the world in young men playing games and placing sports bets on their phones, do we need to even care about shipping?

Sounds like another good reason to tariff imports and encourage domestic production, am I right?

Did you watch 60 Minutes?
China has hacked all our water treatment plants so they can poison our water if war comes.

Not to mention that they featured Andrew Ross Sorkin, who recently wrote a book called 1929.

Do you think we should limit od exclude Chinese foreign nationals as they allegedly take an oath to the CCP; have a culture of IP theft; and every year we catch Chinese nationals stealing our IP.

Fang Fang (Swalwell) and Diane Feinsteins 20-year-plus personal chauffeur weren't from Latvia or Guatemala.

I'm very skeptical of that claim. Do you have a link to that segment?

Littleton MA is a small, wealthy town that must have a very advanced water treatment plant. Most water treatment plants are under invested and far removed from being able to remotely administer chemicals via computer. However that is coming and we need to invest appropriately.

Sensationalist fearmongering propaganda. The water plant could just shut down their ERP, load an old backup and restart the process.

The point of the claim was not that literally they can poison 100% of the population - I myself am on well with my own electrical source to pump it - but to open our eyes that we could be VERY F'd up in so many ways should certain actors choose to go there.

I can grow food. But I can not live "off the earth".

Certainly, USA can F others up, too.

I prefer the idea of cohabitation and shared prosperity on earth.
Trump pisses me off because he keeps tossing g out this mindset of America First which ends up being And Last, too. This faction of Americans who think it's a world of Us vs Them - which is no doubt the vast majority of all Americans and indeed most humans - is not how I would lead.

I prefer JFK's speech,

and lest Diablo complain that I've hijacked his thread, let me add this: So What if China manufactures all the ships. Comparative Advantage Economics says to let them do it, and we will trade with them those things which we have an advantage in.

Foolish?
Yes. But then, I'm an idealist. And I'd make friends with foreigners, rather than bomb them*.
I was also raised in the shadow of Berkeley, born in the 60's. So it's no wonder, right?

I don't have time to watch fully but.....

1) I work with a few water utility people. HUGE interest and investment in cyber for internet of things.
2) And they are daily pitched by companies about this
3) I would want to know who the general is now working for. I do not say they are being alarmist but a core part of the cyber security marketing pitch is that if you don't invest TODAY you are DOOMED. They also (and this is good) remind folks that the most important step to take is the human element - and making people much more aware of cyber threats and good cyber practices and fear plays a part of that: don't open that attachment and be paranoid.. That isn't to dismiss him but to understand how his current position may color his interview
.
4) I have little doubt that we are engaged with likely Russia and China in a bit of mutually assured destruction. Given the vulnerabilities of systems and capabilities we have I do not doubt, for example, that we have the potential to, for example, seize the systems controlling the automated container cranes at major harbors and shut them down.

5) Given 4...and then the whole, "They know what we know that they know" I think a cyber attack that reached the level of dumping chemicals into our water way would be the cyber equivelent of launch at SLBM. Now having watched House of Dynamite (highly recommend) this weekend that doesn't let me sleep as well as I used but I still believe in MAD as a mechanism that works ;-(

PS

Somewhere I read that they think genetic viruses can be created to wipe out people with certain genetic code (but not others). Like, Asians cannot digest lactose the way Caucasians can. If you can use AI to help create such a biological weapon…..

Isn't such a thing insane?

John Lennon was right. Imagine all the people….

I would suggest that you take the 20 minutes to watch the segment.

Timothy D. Haugh - Wikipedia

China is a massive threat to our infrastructure. They aren't even bothering to install malware on these networks. They are simply gaining entry and administrator rights and then playing possum until need be.

By the way, Retired 4-star General Tim Haugh lost his job because that ***** Laura Loomer told Chump that he wasn't LOYAL.

The evidence of the 4-star general's disloyalty?

He was appointed by Biden.

Not skeptical. 12-15 years ago I saw a special on CSPAN about the Pentagon and our stupid idea to open it up to the Internet. China then was inside all of our networks, and we have some idea of what they are doing. They have massive numbers of tech savvy engineers snooping and breaking into our networks FT. Top target? Taiwan topics.

Not to mention all of our IP that they steal, massive numbers of CCP-aligned engineers here, etc.
