Being against the SAVE act is like being a ND fan proud of that offisides call that led directly to their comeback win over Cal.

I am okay with Voter ID laws if the laws also make it easy for anyone to get a valid ID for free.

SAVE act does not do that. If anything, makes it harder. No thanks.

If the Save Act passes my mother will probably no longer be able to vote. She has no passport and no Real ID (no drivers license at all). Her CA state ID would not qualify her. Her birth certificate no longer matches her last name since she was married 58 years ago. Who knows where her marriage certificate is since she was divorced 48 years ago. At over 80 years old she is not going to jump through the hoops of this big government activity.

This kind of voter suppression is the goal of the Save Act.

Folks without IDs lose the ability to do a lot of things. How does she pick up a prescription? How does she travel? How does she bank? If it is important to her to vote, can't you just help her get an ID? Non-driver ID cards can be obtained at her local DMV.

What's worse about you not comprehending my post is you not understanding the legislation you support. I will restate what I posted above for you:

"Her CA state ID would not qualify her" to be eligible to vote. She uses her state ID for everything else you mentioned but that is not good enough for your big Federal government. There is no voter fraud problem. The Save Act does not solve a problem. It is just voter suppression.

You've sure got your democratic talking points down.
If she was married in California, she can contact the County Clerk for the county she was married in and request a notarized copy. Costs about $15 depending on the county. Many California counties have marriage records going back to the 1850s. I'd assume most states are very similar

It's important to remember that voter fraud is not a problem so the SAVE Act doesn't resolve anything. The outcome is the goal and the goal is fewer eligible voters voting.

The plan for my 83 year old mother who gets help with her daily living is for her to file paperwork for a duplicate marriage license. And what will be the response time for San Diego County when they receive tens of thousands of such requests at once? Once my 83 year old mother gets the duplicate marriage license where will she take her paperwork to get registered to vote? What is the government infrastructure for this?

What the Federal government is doing is creating another DMV type experience for citizens to vote. Do you like your current DMV experience? How motivated will people be to add another such experience for the privilege of voting? Many fewer eligible voters will vote, particularly in urban areas where the large populations will make navigating this new Federal bureaucracy more difficult. And that is the goal.

Bingo. The vast majority of state IDs do not qualify as valid voter ID under the SAVE Act. Have Republicans come up with any remedies for this in their legislation? No. You have to pay to get a passport or birth certificate or some kind of cure if your name changed along the way. Sounds like a poll tax to me.

If the law allowed for a broad swaths of government-issued ID to be considered valid then I wouldn't have the same objection. I still think Voter ID laws are solving a problem that hardly exists, but whatever, go for it if it makes people feel better. The SAVE Act doesn't do that, it's very restrictive.

Is that because CA provides state IDs to illegal immigrants? Given that fact, it sounds like she needs to proactively prove citizenship. Hopefully, you can help her with that matter so she won't be "disenfranchised."

You see how ultimately they don't care if eligible voters are disenfranchised. In fact, it is the goal.

If the federal government is placing these additional restrictions on people's voting rights, they need to make it very easy for legitimate citizens to remedy any issues and stay eligible. Just saying "well State X needs to fix this law" isn't good enough. Do you disagree?

No, nowhere in Dajo's post does he describe himself or his mom lifting a finger for her to vote. If he or his mom made a good faith effort and just couldn't figure out how to get eligible under SAVE, then I'd agree.

It's pretty clear that you and Dajo actually have a solid understanding of the legislation being proposed in the SAVE Act. Your posts on the subject are valuable.

Thank you for educating others who clearly haven't done their homework.
