Sct jr has an internship offer there. 5 days a week. Feels like a soil crushing commute. How bad? We would need to buy him a car as will be 2k a month a least of hard stop and go miles. Does cal run a shuttle?

Don't know about a shuttle (I see what did there with NASA), but how long is the internship? If only for a couple months that seems doable to me with a car. I'm spent multiple years living in the East Bay and commuting to the South Bay for roles

Berkeley to Moffett?

Gee, when we got married my wife commuted from Walnut Creek to Los Altos. Sometimes I'd drive with her at 6 and then Caltrain up to SF, then take bus to market street.

I'm not too sympathetic, my friend.

CT Jr tells me that cal students get free Public Transportation of some sort. She barts to SF.

Thus, you can tell SCT Jr to bart to the intermodal station near SFO (Milbrae?) and then Cal Train south, and then ride his electric bike to Moffett.

He will be able to sleep and do all his work on the trains.

Beats the soul-crushing traffic. But being a Bay Area guy, it is what it is. Commute in off hours if you opt the car option. It's doable. He's young, these are the things he needs to overcome.

If the opportunity is temporary and a good career move, this is nothing. Buckle up.

Bike ride from Mountain View station to Ames is 2.1 miles. That's not too bad, but the train (BART + Caltrain) = 2 hours.
That's sucks!

There is a blimp that runs every day from Cafe Strada to the Ames hangar.

BART to Milpitas is $7.75 with no discount and 80 minutes.

VTA train from Milpitas to Bayshore/Nasa station is $2.50 and 40 minutes. Then still 1.2 miles away.

That's another 2-2.5 hours.

That sucks, too.

I'm starting to have sympathy. And think the car is better.

Buy him a Tesla with auto-driver, hahaha. So much for sucking it up, kid.

It would actually be good practice in life. He can try both Bart-Train routes, be an expert.

Leave at 6AM
There by 8:30

Leave at 5:00
Home by 7:30

And he becomes master of both sides of the bay.

With the car, it's 48 miles.

I'm sold.

Get him a gym membership. Commute early/late, find something good to do when he is not in the office.

It is an internship/ felllowship. So off hours probably less of an option. Feels like at morning rush hlur about the same time as mass transit

From when to when?
I would never sit in traffic.
Leave at alternative hours.

I hate traffic.

Full days? Partial days?
Would he then stop taking classes on campus?

3 days a week?

If this is a full time internship during a non-school portion of the calendar I'd consider renting Jr a room nearer the internship over buying a car.

Now you are talking!
I bet this is a couple days on a couple days off. Otherwise they'd already have thought of this?

No. During Term. Unclear how many days a week but "The boy": seems to think he can balance. I think he is understimating the impact of 90 minute one way commute on his QOL.

That said, there is value in learning that lesson before you take a job, have your significant other convince you she absolutely needs a a yard and then commute 3 hours from Modesto ;-)
