Mao and Stalin did not get along very well, and things only got worse after Stalin's death, when China and the USSR became near enemies, with border disputes. As well Russia and Iran were historical archenemies. Historically as well, the Russian Empire annexed outer Manchuria from China in late stage Qing dynasty when China was a heroin-infested basketcase.

Today Russia and China are very close allies, mostly due to the fact that US administrations want to break up Russia and stop China from continuing to expand economically. Iran is the southern frontier of modern Russia and the western frontier of China, one that neither country can afford to let down lest their geopolitical positions unravel.
