How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm helping my grandson with his math class. I solve his current problem set before sitting down with him. I check my work with AI (Gemini) to make sure I don't make any arithmetic mistakes. This week's problems involve a picture of parallel lines intersected by other lines. Each of the angles formed has an algebraic expression. You have to solve for x by setting up an equation based on the relationship of the angles involved. Twice in six problems Gemini got the relationship of the angles wrong. I would have thought my now such an easy problem wouldn't generate an error. Is my expectation out of line?

Your expectations aren't out of line but AI still struggles sometimes.

Try a prompt like this next time: "Before solving, identify the two angles, state their relationship, and explain how their positions in the diagram establish that relationship. Then write and solve the equation."

i was curious to see if that worked as in addition to solving the equation it did expressly state the relationship of the angles (incorrectly twice.) before working through the algebra.

So what happened? I used that exact prompt and while it correctly solved the two previously wrong problems it made an error on a problem it previoiusly got right! There were three angles involved and it set up an equation with two of the angles in the problem and a third that wasn't in the problem. Seems like an odd error

Maybe because the prompt specifically asks about two angles and not three?

changed the prompt to read "... identify the angles involved in the problem, ,,," and it still made the same mistake

Yeah that's frustrating for sure but it's a good example of AI still having work to do. It ain't perfect

Be careful, AI does not take criticism well.
