My CAL roommate back in 1980 and 81 had three John Prine albums so I heard all of this back then. Then we saw him at a very small venue in about 2005. I really like John Prine Thanks for reminding me I should be listening to the two CDs I have now

The Great Compromise is a good Post Vietnam era song too.

"Bob Dylan's take on Prine: "Pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mind trips to the nth degree."

I've seen Prine several times over the past 40 years and think he's great. But greatest? I dunno, Joni Mitchell and Dylan are still alive.

I would give him the nod for best at clever and amusing -- Space Monkey, In Spite of Ourselves, etc.

Favorite song? Probably depends on my mood... But I think it is Paradise.

Got to go with Paradise as well. Probably because it was one of the first I heard live, way back in the 70's.

Also share your thought about mood - love the goofy ones when I'm feeling that way. Jesus - The Missing Years is good for that.

Illegal Smile and Spanish Pipedream. Dad had that album on steady rotation throughout my childhood so I love all of the songs. But those first two are my favs!

This would have made Mr. Prine vulnerable:

"In 2013, Prine underwent surgery to remove cancer in his left lung. After the surgery, a physical therapist put him through an unusual workout to build stamina: Prine was required to run up and down his house stairs, grab his guitar while still out of breath and sing two songs. Six months later, he was touring again." Wikipedia
