How do you guys put up with these right wing news sites? That was a mass of popup ads, popup videos and survey and daily briefing requests. I can't deal with all that nonsense. Other news web sites do it too but not to that degree.MinotStateBeav said:

It's very obvious that wasn't the implication. It's also very obvious that one event had nothing to do with the other which is why it was strange Chancellor Christ brought it up.Cal_79 said:
What is inappropriate about the chancellor's announcement? Are you implying that the senseless murder of a white male is not as disgusting as the senseless murder of a black male?

If it helps, I doubt Cal has ever had a good look on the Washington Examiner.

George Floyd isn't really just about "George Floyd." The George Floyd killing has had a domino effect of shaking up the world we live in. I mean, if he hadn't died, Mississippi wouldn't be poised to remove the Confederate Flag from its state flag. There's been a worldwind of events that have resulted from his death that, quite frankly, could be seen as overwhelming. And it seems to me that was what the chancellor was referring to.
Of course, a Conservativepublication like the Washington Examiner is going to try to seize on anything liberal UC Berkeley does to generate outrage because they know their audience.

I couldn't imagine inviting Chancellor Christ to speak at the kid's funeral.
We mourn his passing but... we also mourn George Floyd.

He was killed during these stressful, unusual times in the campus community and the world (her sentence included the pandemic *and* George Floyd). And she's acknowledging that. I think his family is smart enough not to respond to right-wing trolling of her words. Any "normal" person would realize these aren't normal times.
Christ devoted her first 12 sentences to Seth Smith.
Her 13th sentence was devoted to putting his death in the context of our uneasy times.
When my fellow Cal classmate Ken Ishida, age 20, was forced at gunpoint into the trunk of his car at his Channing Way apartment garage and shot dead in a Vallejo alleyway, I don't even recall the chancellor's comments -- if he made any.

Rode-Smith said she does not, however, want to see her son's killing used as fodder by those who want to fan the flames of racial divisiveness.
"Let's get rid of the hate, period," she said. "Nobody should feel anger and hatred toward another human because of what they look like."
"I don't hate anyone," Rode-Smith continued, trying to hold back tears. "But I certainly am frustrated and I wish I had my son back."
Before "Hate Crime" can be applied to this murder you need to know if this was a crime of opportunity. Was this young man killed in a robbery or was he killed because of the color of his skin? Once that is established then you can make a determination and apply the "Hate Crime" moniker if warranted. Does that meet with your approval? Maybe you should use that standard before you post the incendiary postings featuring people of color that you are so well known for.BearForce2 said:Hate crime? That is a tragic story. It is also a statistical anomaly in that (if I read a chart correctly) 1.7 % of murders in the United States are committed by people the suspect's age (60 years).
Reviewing his criminal record certainly indicates the criminal justice system failed. To me, the mob style execution of a complete stranger (from what we know), tends to indicate the possibility that he may have murdered before. It will be interesting if any cold cases are revisited.
I wonder if they will look at the guy for this one. He could have followed this man home from choir practice:

*Emilie Raguso is an A+ journalist. I followed her coverage of a criminal trial and her reporting had the detail of a court reporter's transcript and did not contain any bias. She makes Berkeleyside a top local news website IMO.

Hey, Bear Fart unless you know why the crime was committed then you are tilting at windmills. Have you seen the DA's interview with the suspect? If not then why not let the investigators conduct their investigation but I guess that would stop you from hurling the racial bombs that you are so well known for. I am more than willing to try someone for murder if that is what the case calls for but until we know exactly what happened I need more information to make an informed decision. Since there are but a few people of color who post here, I am more than willing to add my comments when I see bull**** posted and if that is what you mean by "savior" then, you're welcome.BearForce2 said:Hey Captain Catastrophe, there was no robbery, he was shot in the back of the head and that's it. If there is proof that his motivation was based on race, than yes it is a hate crime and should be prosecuted as such. It probably won't be because there is nothing demonstrating it was racially motivated at the crime scene. If the guy has any other things that would provide that evidence (anything in his home, internet postings, etc.) I hope they find it. However, failure to charge a hate crime is not indication that it only applies one way (it doesn't) There is a very likely possibility the guy is just crazy. There is also the possibility that he was racially motivated but gave no outward indication of that motivation. Motivation is hard to prove when you aren't caught yelling racial slurs while you commit your crime or you don't post on the internet what you are about to do and why.BearForce2 said:Hate crime?
