Bears Add a Big Transfer in Penn State Safety Isaiah Humphries

January 13, 2019
30,546

The Bears added a nice piece to their highly-rated defense and defensive backfield with the impending spring 2019 transfer of Penn State safety Isaiah Humphries, who will enroll this week and sit out his transfer season after redshirting as a freshman. He’ll have three years to play three seasons beginning next spring.

The 5’11/190 safety was offered by the Bears out of high school and they formed a good connection with the Sachse High School (Rowlett, Texas) recruit but the 3 star athlete chose to follow in his father’s footsteps to sign and enroll with Penn State in spring of 2018. Humphries chose the Nittany Lions over other top programs like Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Baylor in addition to Cal when he made his initial decision.

The decision to transfer wasn’t an easy one for Humphries but ultimately, he felt that stepping out and following his instincts was the right thing to do.

“Sometimes in life you gotta make those tough CEO decisions,” said Humphries. “Those decisions where you have to lose a little to gain a lot more.

“I knew my situation at PSU and I didn’t know what would happen if I left but I prayed about it and took a leap of faith and ended up on the other side of the country at the best public school in the world. I felt as if I wasn’t going where I needed and wanted to go in multiple aspects of my life and going to Cal allows me to fulfill those needs.”

When it became time to officially move forward, the Bears were front and center in the talented DB’s mind.

“When I put my name in the portal, the first name that popped in my head was Cal,” said Humphries. “I knew I would fit in there and be able to come in and compete, and the environment was one that I knew I would like.

“Visiting the campus and the Bay Area, I realized that I wanted to be near a city like San Francisco but just far enough to have that college feel. I was very impressed and I felt truly at home.”

Humphries likes what he’s seen in the program’s trajectory and the increasing dominance of the defense at Cal, as well.

“I’ve liked the direction everything was headed and I want to add my skills and athleticism to the team and try to be the best that I can be,” said Humphries. “I want to help turn Cal into the PAC12's premier team and start something that will last years after I finish playing.”

As a senior, Humphries compiled 60 tackles and seven interceptions along with one forced fumble and one fumble recovered.

An excellent student, sporting an impressive 4.37 gpa in high school, Humphries would like to apply to Cal’s Haas School of Business this fall. He noted that Cal’s prestigious academic reputation played a big role in his interest in enrolling at Cal this spring.

welcome aboard! Gosh our defense is going to be good and that isn't a bad identity to bring to the table.

Couldn't care less who Kima is but happy to have a player of Humphries' stature to acclimate to all things Cal, learn the defensive system, and be ready to step in at safety when Hawkins and Davis have departed!

Welcome aboard!

Anybody who doesn't know who Kima is (or Bunk, for that matter), you could be in for a treat: They are characters on the HBO series "The Wire", which aired for 5 years just after the turn of the century. Watch it some time, as it is often hailed as one of the greatest series ever to be on TV and I will not argue the point. It is about life in inner-city Baltimore during that period. EXTREMELY well written and well acted. Very easy to watch on a basic level, then you can ponder the other levels.

PS: Again, welcome to Cal, Isaiah!

Better than Inspector Morse, Beck, or Fog and Crime? I think not......

American TV is as Newton Minnow so memorably said... a vast wasteland.

I'm afraid that none of those shows have a character even remotely as compelling as Omar:

not to worry. It's "free" now on Amazon Prime. I've watched all of the danish, Icelandic and British stuff the other poster speaks of and I'll put this series against those. All are very good. But back to Kima, she is not, I repeat not, Humpries' mom. But if she were, he would be even more badass then he
is. Watch the series and get back.

Thanks, LA. Between family, work, outdoor activities, coaching football and rugby, kids sports, and some occasional attempts to read books, any remaining TV time is spent mostly watching college and pro sports. Shameless with William H. Macy is entertaining and trying now to get into Game of Thrones. Guess I'll try The Wire next.

The Swedish (very dark with a twisted sense of humor) and German stuff is the best. Although, I do like the Norwegian (Mammon was really good) and Danish (I just started a 20 episode set of The Eagle) shows as well.

I too am a fan of the Nordic shows (The Bridge, Occupied, Borgen, Trapped, etc) but I wouldn't counsel anyone to start The Wire unless they've watched Breaking Bad, the greatest show of all time...probably twice. And that's no disrespect intended to The Wire. Awesome series and top 10 of all time easily.

Edit: And welcome to Cal, Isaiah!

It seems to me that Wilcox doesn't see any instant upgrade for his offense other than through trying to coach-up those *** recruits that he can get to come to and otherwise be accepted to Cal. This means that he will expect his defenses to come through with wins. Isn't his and his staffs inability to attract marquee offensive skill players kind of like Sonny's problem in reverse?

I know....I know...many of you are going to shout at me, "But he's got Cal is going in the right direction." Well is he? I mean, I could go along with such homer mantra if Cal was rising in the conference standings. Cal isn't. All I can hope for is that Wilcox will bring in those offensive stars in the 2020 or 2021 recruiting classes. I guess our concerted plight is that "we'll just have to wait." I've heard this before over the last 50 ****ing years!

The Wire over GOT? Not in a million years for me. I've seen all the episodes of The Wire, including season 2 with my old high school football teammate Chris Bauer who was one of the stars as Frank Sobotka, but I've seen every episode of GOT at least 3 times and read all the books, including the prequel illustrated novels and am halfway through the new Fire and Blood book. It's not even remotely close IMO, though I know there are a lot of huge Wire fans here that might disagree. Two completely different styles and genres, though, obviously. As a side note, really interesting to see Baelish playing Tommy Carcetti in The Wire after first seeing him in GOT since I only caught up on The Wire a couple years ago.

First, welcome Isaiah!

Second, I've only read a couple books from GOT. I had to stop in the middle if the third book because Martin's writing was that bad. His writing is tedious and he creates artificial suspense by skipping from one narrator to another. I can see how his writing style might work for a screenplay, but it's complete rubbish for a novel.

Also, some of the decisions made by his characters defy common sense or logic. How does Catherine fulfill her duty either as dowager lady of Winterfell or as a mother by staying at her father's castle? How does releasing Jamie Lannister help ensure her daughters' safety? He was her only bargaining chip/point of leverage. These are just some of the obvious flaws with Catherine, there are innumerable problems with many of the other characters.

Seriously, Martin's a worse writer than Dan Brown. How I loathed _The DaVinci Code_.

The thing is, I wasn't even an English major at Cal. I've just grew up reading well-written novels.

"Catherine?" A big fan, I see. Over 70 million GOT books sold would seem to contradict with your premise about Martin's writing prowess, but I digress.

It could've been spelled "Katherine," but she was often referred to as "Cat." Like I said, I only read two books and put down the third, so I'm clearly not a fan. Again, this was due to Martin's tedious style and irrational characters.

That 70 million copies of the books were sold does not lessen these criticisms nor invalidate them. Different strokes for different folks and all that. _The Da Vinci Code_ sold over 80 million copies, but it was also poorly written. The _Twilight_ novels have sold over 100 million copies, but are utter crap. As I'm sure you'll agree, popular fiction does not always equal good writing.
