Bear Insider Video: Cal 1B Andrew Vaughn Talks SMC Series Win
Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn continued his torrid start to the 2019 season with a grand slam and solo homer plus a single, pushing his average to .529 for the season, keying the Bears' 9-3 win at St. Mary's College in Moraga today.
The Bears (6-4) stayed hot, bouncing back to win six of their last seven games after starting 0-3.
Vaughn had plenty of help, with dual sport athlete Brandon McIlwain going 3-for-4 with an RBI and catcher Korey Lee adding three hits. Moraga native Max Flower had a succesful homecoming, adding a pair of hits and a solo home run, pushing his average to .317. After a bit of a slow start, McIlwain’s climbed to number two on the Bears in batting average at .360, adding eight runs and five RBI on the season in just 25 at bats.
After a rough start, giving up two runs in the 1st, pitcher Grant Holman settled down to pitch five scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and the pair of runs in six innings.

The Bears ended up taking two of three from the Gaels after a slow series start in their 10-3 loss in Berkeley Thursday night. They bounced back for a big 13-1 win Friday before today’s win. Yesterday’s game was postponed indefinitely due to rain.
Cal wll go on the road to Baton Rouge to face #2 LSU (8-3), who is sure to fall in the polls after being swept by Texas this week in Austin.
