Former El Camino College wide receiver transfer Trevon Clark was a key pickup for the Bears late in the recruiting process for Cal’s 2019 class. The 6-4/180 junior brought the size and skillset the Bears’ receiving corps was missing and so far has lived up to his billing after hauling in 57 receptions for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns to earn All-American, All-State and All-California Region III recognition as a sophomore.

“Right now, I’m getting really comfortable and can really feel it and see it in my game every single day in practice,” said Clark. “I feel like as we progress through the season -we’re at the halfway point- I’m going to be really comfortable.”

Clark was coached and mentored at El Camino by former Cal star receiver Geoff McArthur and the former Bear had a big impact on Clark’s development and view of the recruiting process.

What did he learn about Cal before committing from McArthur?

“Really, their culture and the love that they have for their players -not only on the field but off the field. Coach is always going to look out for you.

“The environment is really just amazing, what kind of football player Cal can make you. That’s what I learned from him.”

McArthur has continued to follow his Bears closely over the years and with his former pupil now in the blue and gold, the former Cal star is watching even closer.

“I’m very proud that Tre has been able to contribute early on this season,” said McArthur. “There was a definite learning curve but it seems like he’s more comfortable with the offense and the game speed

“Going forward, I expect consistency and productivity. That’s what I got from him at El Camino College and I expect the same thing moving forward.”

Clark echoed his former coaches sentiments.

“These last few games, I’ve had good games so it makes him feel good that coming here and playing and with him having been at Cal, is like I’m walking right in his footsteps, so he’s really excited,” said Clark.

After an initial breaking in period, where Clark took 2nd and 3rd team reps in fall camp and gathered one reception in his first three games, the athletic receiver’s picked up the pace, hauling in 12 more passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns in the last 3 games, moving into a starting role and third on the team in total receptions, tied for first in touchdown receptions.

In what areas does he hope to grow as the season progresses?

“Honestly, just attention to details,” said Clark. “The little things within the plays, my depths, the right allignment on the field. Really just being more of an aggressive wide receiver. I’ll be working on it.”

After the slow start, it’s been easy to see the progression in Clark’s game along with the blossoming confidence.

“Definitely,” said Clark. “Like against ASU, I feel like my momentum from that game carried over to Oregon so I feel like I’m going to start rolling here really soon.”

As with Clark, QB Devon Modster is a work in progress after taking over for injured starter Chase Garbers in the Bears’ disappointing 24-17 loss to ASU. Clark sees the progress Modster is making, both personally and in his connection with the Cal receiving corps.

“We’re excited to go into the second half of the season,” said Clark. “Devon -he really likes to throw it downfield so we’re really locked in at the receiver room.

“Since ASU, every every single day and every snap, I’ve seen progression from him. I’m real excited to see what he has going.”

Saturday’s matchup with the 2-4 (1-2) Beavers Saturday could be just what the doctor ordered for an offense that has struggled to find consisistency, particularly of late.

“Oh, we’re real confident,” said Clark. “The way Oregon State’s defense plays, that’s going to be a good matchup. Devon -we have plays set up to really put some points up on the board.”

Music to Cal fans’ ears.
