Cal Basketball Picks up Fresno State Guard Transfer Jarred Hyder

Mark Fox has filled another scholarship with the commitment of 6-3 guard Jarred Hyder.

Originally from San Bernandino, Hyder played his freshman season at Fresno State where he was fifth on the team averaging 9.1 points in just under 32 minutes per game. Hyder shot 38% from the field including 30.2% from three but also shot 83.3% from the free-throw line. He averaged 3.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.5 turnovers per game. Hyder played primarily point guard for the Bulldogs.

In a game at Haas Pavilion against Cal this year, Hyder scored seven points in 34 minutes going 3-of-10 from the floor as the Bears pulled away from Fresno State and won 69-63.

As a prep at Damien High School in Laverne, CA, Hyder averaged 21.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game his senior season before signing with FSU. Hyder will be reunited with former AAU teammate Matt Bradley at Cal.

A traditional transfer, Hyder will have to sit out this season per NCAA rules. However, the NCAA is scheduled to vote on May 20th to potentially allow immediate eligibility for student-athletes transferring for the first time. If the organization passes that ruling, Hyder would be eligible this coming season.

Hyder joins an incoming class that includes freshmen wings Monty Bowser and Jalen Celestine and graduate transfer wing Ryan Betley from Penn. If available this season, look for Hyder to help run the point alongside sophomore Joel Brown.

Fox still has one scholarship to use and the Bears are in the final running for combo guard Michael Flowers who was set to decide earlier this week but has since pushed his decision back to a date to be determined. Flowers, who has played three seasons at Western Michigan is reportedly working to finish up his undergraduate studies by the end of the summer to qualify as a graduate transfer. The 6-1 guard originally from Michigan led Western Michigan in scoring and assists with 16.9 points and 3.2 assists per game in just over 32 minutes.
