Pro Bears Week 5

October 14, 2020

It was a relatively quiet week for Cal alums in the NFL, with Aaron Rodgers, DeSean Jackson, Alex Mack, Marvin Jones Jr. and Jaylinn Hawkins out with either injuries or byes.

There were some impressive performances however, including Jared Goff’s skillful showing in a win against Washington. Keenan Allen got his third touchdown this year. The best performance of the week must’ve been Cam Jordan’s, who helped the Saints defense wreak havoc on the Chargers’ offensive line.

Cam Jordan

Cam Jordan is finally looking like the player we’ve come to love and know, fielding a very busy day against the Los Angeles Chargers. With a game-high 10 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and 4 QB pressures, Jordan made his presence known.

Jordan totalled just 13 tackles and 1 sack in his first three games, which isn’t something to criticize at all. But, as a 5x Pro Bowler, there is a level of dominance that we’ve come to expect from Cam when he takes the field. That was on full display on Sunday, as he now has two consecutive games with sacks. He’ll now go into Week 6 with a Saints bye.

Jared Goff

Getting the win to bring LA to 4-1, Goff had a solid day, completing 21 out of 30 attempts for 309 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. He also rushed for 1 touchdown. Goff is looking good this year, and has been the silent hero for an underrated Rams team coming into 2020.

Goff’s highlights of the day included a 56-yard bomb to Robert Woods on the first play of the second quarter. Goff has been averaging an outstanding 9 yards per attempt, showing he hasn’t lost his ability to air it out.

Statistically, Goff is on track to finish his most efficient season, with a current rating of 108, higher than his career-best of 101 in 2018. With a strong start this year, Goff will need to make sure he doesn’t trail off, which happened in 2018 when he finished the last 10 games: with 61.8% completions, 16 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

Keenan Allen

Forced to leave the game in the first quarter with back spasms, Allen caught two receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown in Monday’s overtime loss to the Saints.

The Chargers will be on bye Week 6 rather than Week 10, conveniently affording Allen some extra maintenance time before Los Angeles’ next game Oct. 25 versus the Jaguars. The expectation is that the wideout will be at or near full health by that point.

Mitchell Schwartz

Adam Teicher / ESPN
Schwartz extended his streak of consecutive regular-season starts to 133 in Sunday’s 40-32 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Schwartz registered no allowed sacks and his first penalty of the season, with a holding call. Last year, he was called for holding just 4 times.

Schwartz and the Chiefs offensive line has been inconsistent this season, with Schwartz giving up 2

sacks already and Patrick Mahomes taking hits and pressure constantly. Making it worse, left tackle Kelechi Osemele was ruled out for the season yesterday with torn tendons in both knees. The offensive line will look to improve next week on Monday Night against the Bills at 2pm Pacific Time.

Tyson Alualu

Alualu registed 2 tackles (2 assist) in Sunday’s 38-29 win over the Steelers. That makes Alualu one of two Cal alums on undefeated teams, along with Aaron Rodgers.

The loss this week was the worst from the Steelers defensive front this season, and they’ll face a bigger test in the Cleveland Browns next week, who are the best rushing team in the league. Should be a good day for Alualu.

Is there any good reason not to have an 1 NFL game every day of the week? I mean, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night(I think they have that), and then a Friday night game.

That would be great. At the same time though, Sundays would be less great.

It would be great for the fans. The main issue would be scheduling especially rest between games and preparation time. Might be really difficult to make it equitable.
