ASU Game Canceled -Bears Looking For Alternatives
For the second straight week Cal has had its football season opener canceled. The Bears matchup against Arizona State, scheduled for Saturday night in Tempe, was canceled Friday.
However, unlike last weekend’s matchup against Washington which was scrapped after a Cal defensive lineman tested positive for COVID-19 and the entire position group placed in quarantine, this time the reason for the cancellation is not because of the Bears,
ASU had canceled its Thursday practice and ESPN reported that coach Herm Edwards and “multiple players and coaching staff members” had tested positive.”
“In the past few days our test results included a number of positive cases, including multiple student-athletes and coaching staff members, one of which is Head Coach Herm Edwards," Arizona State athletic director Ray Anderson said in a statement. "This put our team below the Pac-12's minimum threshold of 53 available scholarship student-athletes under the league's game cancellation policy.”
The Arizona Republic reported that, “Edwards has been among those adhering to guidelines, keeping to social distancing standards and wearing a mask and yet he still contracted the virus and uses this as an opportunity to stress how important it is for the public to take it seriously.”
