Men's Basketball Falls to UCLA
LOS ANGELES – Three Golden Bears scored in double figures but California was unable to match a hot start by UCLA in a 76-56 loss at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday.
Makale Foreman hit four 3-pointers and led Cal (2-3, 0-2 Pac-12) with 14 points while Ryan Betley and Matt Bradley added 12 apiece. The host Bruins (3-1, 1-0 ) shot 69.6 percent (16-23) from the field over the first 20 minutes to pull away from Cal, which dropped its second straight Pac-12 contest.
Cal traded blows with the Bruins over the first seven minutes of the game and found itself trailing by just five, 16-11, following a layup by Dimitrios Klonaras. UCLA responded by reeling off 15 straight points, however, to take a 31-11 lead by the 6:57 mark and eventually led, 40-22, at the intermission.
The Bears were not able to cut their deficit to fewer than 12 points in the second half, despite an improved offensive attack; Cal scored 34 points on 52 percent shooting (13-25) over the final 20 minutes and was led by 8 from both Foreman and Bradley.
A made jumper by Grant Anticevich with 4:30 remaining in the game brought Cal within 66-54, before the Bruins reeled off 10 consecutive points to close it out.
Cal will remain in SoCal to play Pepperdine at 6 p.m. PT on Wednesday, Dec. 9 in Malibu. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network with John Sadak and Pete Gillen on the call.
