California-Arizona Football Game Cancelled

Pac-12 Statement Regarding California-Arizona Football Game

The Pac-12 has, after consultation with both Arizona and Cal, cancelled the Arizona at Cal football game scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 19. This decision was made under the Pac-12's football game cancellation policy due to both Arizona and Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for the game. Under Conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest.

The cancellation of this game is very disappointing to our student-athletes and our fans. While all of us want to see our football student-athletes on the field competing, our number one priority must continue to be the health and safety of all those connected to Pac-12 football programs.

California Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox’s Statement

"Our heart goes out to all the student-athletes who put in so much preparation and time to play the game they love. We are disappointed that we are not able to host Arizona, but I am proud of our team and what we have been able to accomplish under difficult and unprecedented circumstances this season. Providing a safe environment has been at the top of our priority list throughout the season, and I'd like to thank everyone who helped us put together a plan to practice and play within health guidelines. I'd also like to recognize our seniors for their hard work, dedication and leadership throughout their Cal careers. They truly are a special group of student-athletes who have helped build our program. We have a bright future ahead of us, and we are looking forward to preparing for 2021."

Setting aside the crazy games I saw this season, it is disturbing that somehow teams right in our conference and conferences across the country adjusted much more quickly to take whatever steps necessary to try to save their schedules and athletic programs than Cal did.

Covid won. Cal lost.

Yup agreed - so Cal of us to talk like we know best and then look like idiots. Oh well - hopefully I will be in memorial next year.

This was so predictable that you have to wonder about the judgment of the people who announced this game would take place.

Looking at you, Larry.

A fitting end to a fatally defective season. Unhappily, we now have a similarly flawed basketball season to deal with but much more important issues than college sports need to be resolved.

This is the way the season ends: not with a bang, but a whimper.

I'm not looking at data but it just seems like the basketball programs have not had the issues that the football programs have had. Anyone know why?
The truth lies somewhere between CNN and Fox.

Good question. Maybe less players per roster?

Probably because there is like 10x the people involved in Football, and football is a contact sport.

Sure basketball has some contact, but not the level of snuggling.

I guess that's as good an explanation as any.

I'm not looking at data, but it seems like the basketball programs have had the same issues the football programs have had.

A whole lot of scheduled basketball games have been canceled or postponed, a lot of programs have had to "pause." I'm aware of at least 60, and that doesn't count teams/leagues that have simply shut down for the season. At least 2 Pac-12 games already scheduled were postponed, SC-Stanford scheduled for yesterday was postponed due to SC COVID, and Colorado-Arizona was postponed. UConn-Georgetown and Texas-Baylor didn't happen yesterday. Other Pac-12 teams have had games canceled, like ASU-Baylor, Long Beach UCLA, Stanford-Utah Valley, Northern Arizona-Arizona. The ACC opener for Louisville/NC State this week ain't happening, Louisville hasn't played since December 1 and is on "pause," although NC State is back to practice after a COVID "pause." The biggest college basketball game of the year so far, #1 Gonzaga vs. #2 Baylor, didn't happen due to COVID. Last week, Duke canceled the rest of its OOC schedule.

Coach K and Rick PItino have both suggested postponing the season, with others saying they are crazy and the players are safer staying on campus with the team as much as possible.

Cal had to "pause" before the season started to deal with COVID, which certainly affected Cal's ability to get ready for the start of the season. Cal is going to, if it hasn't already, cancel the road trip to Boston College (and perhaps another school) scheduled for next week, and try to replace the game/games with something more local.

I'm not sure how we compare who has had it worse so far, football or basketball. Basketball certainly seems off to a worse start, but the start of basketball is happening during a surge, where as football at least got started when things were relatively calm.

Anyway, basketball programs HAVE had the issues football programs have had.

Two things are more manageable for basketball during the pandemic:
1) Greater number of games and ability to play more than once a week provides greater flexibility.
2) Greater "fungibility" of players. A college football team with no available offensive linemen doesn't want to put together an o-line of tight ends and linebackers. A basketball team with no available power forwards, but 10 available players, can and will still play a scheduled game.

No other PAC 12 school has only played four games.
Is there some rule that says that the game couldn't be played on December 26 in Tucson?

?? UW has only played four games, they won't play another.

WSU and ASU have only played three games, they will both play a fourth this weekend barring a cancellation.

Utah has only played 4, but will get a fifth against WSU barring cancellation.

Colorado has only played 4 conference games, plus the only OOC game played by a conference game all season (vs. SDSU), and are slated to be the only odd-man out this weekend, with their scheduled opponent getting bumped to play in the "championship" game and Colorado left out in the cold.

Even if all games scheduled for the weekend get played, we won't be alone at the bottom with 4 games. Fully 1/3 of the conference will only have 4 games of any kind. For a lot of reasons, the staff and players are done, and we don't need to play another just to get to 5 games.
