BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The California men's water polo team landed at No. 1 in the nation in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) weekly poll, as announced Wednesday.
The Bears (5-2, 5-2 MPSF) are coming off a 3-0 weekend of MPSF action in Los Angeles, defeating No. 2(T) UCLA and No. 2(T) USC on Saturday before knocking off then-No. 1 Stanford on Sunday at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Freshman Tommy Kennedy was named MPSF Newcomer of the Week following his impressive effort through the weekend, totaling three goals and four assists.
Leading the Bears in points through the first seven matches are Jack Deely (21 points, 10 goals, 11 assists) and Nikolaos Papnikolaou (19 points, 18 goals, 1 assist). Papanikolaou leads the MPSF in drawn exclusions, recording 30 to date.
Adrian Weinberg is 5-0 in the cage this season and is averaging 13.60 saves per game (56.7 percent). He had a season-high 15 saves in Sunday's win over Stanford. Weinberg's 68 total saves are second-most in the conference.
Cal will play in one more round-robin style regular season tournament, matching up once again against UCLA, USC and Stanford in Palo Alto Feb. 20-21. Seeding for the MPSF Championship will be based on the four teams' play in the matches hosted at USC and Stanford. The MPSF Championship is slated to take place March 6-7 at UCLA.
