Cal Football Recruiting

Recruits Shine in West Coast's Return of High School Football

With California, Washington and Oregon finally allowing high school football to take place, the vast majority of Cal’s 2022 offerees now have the chance to show off their skills. To cap things off we’ll start with Cal’s lone 2021 commit to have played this past weekend.

Lu-Magia Hearns picked off a pass in De La Salle’s 35-27 home win over St. Mary’s on Saturday. Hearns is a fiesty 5-10 CB with a knack for tipping passes and snagging errant throws. He’ll join three other DBs as part of Cal’s 2021 class. From the same secondary, 3-star CB Zeke Berry returned one kickoff for an impressive 45 yards, adding one catch for 40 yards on the Spartans’ offense.  On the other team was 4-star junior wide-out Jadyn Marshall, who is also being recruited by Cal and a number of Pac-12 programs. He had himself a day with 8 catches for 184 total yards and a couple of scores.

Also from the 2022 class, two Cal offerees played exceptionally well in Servite’s 42-6 stomping over Damien in southern California. 6’5 4-star Keyan Burnett caught one 70-yard touchdown and 6’3 5-star Tetairoa McMillan caught one 80-yarder.

In the state of Washington, Djouvensky Schlenbaker ran all over Sehome in Squalicum’s 54-20 win in the city of Bellingham. The 6-1 3-star RB made plays on the rushing and receiving end, going for three touchdowns, highlighted by one 74-yard scamper.

Three hours south in the town of Chehalis, Austin Terry caught five passes for 70 yards and a TD, to go along with a ½ sack, blocked punt and pass defended off the edge, putting on a terrific all-around performance.

4-star WR Tobias Merriweather was trending on Twitter after his impressive kickoff return versus Skyview on Friday in Camas, a suburb of Vancouver. The 6’4 receiver showcased his elite speed as he ran past Skyview’s entire special teams unit. He finished the night with 105 yards on five catches with another td on a reception, with two tds for the night.

Andrew Savaiinaea, a 3-star DE/TE out of The Dalles, Oregon, had a big first game for the Riverhawks, recording five tackles (3 solo, 2 ast) and three catches for 42 yards and a TD in the 27-6 win over Putnam. At 6’3 and 273 lbs, Savaiinaea is a big, jacked recruit that can play both sides of the ball as a dominant blocking tight end or versatile defensive lineman.

South of Portland in Springfield, underrated 3-star TE Jacob Newell‍ produced a stellar outing in Thurston’s game against Willamette, catching six passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns, adding one tackle for a loss of four. Newell surprisingly only has one other offer from New Mexico. At 6’5 and 220 lbs, he’s a quick, nimble tight end that has also has the strength to block.

With a small class, Cal's only taking 1 QB

Doesn't diminish the fact that he has been offered, does it? Or has Cal told him, "we have our man, you should look elsewhere"? Is that what you are insinuating?

Welcome back, DLSb! I was supposed to be at DLS for the opener but they decided to not let media in And the Miramonte-Piedmont game I went to earlier that day turned out to be a scrimmage and even that started at least an hour late so I've still yet to see some high school ball. Can't wait, though!

That's a bummer! St. Mary's gave the Spartans all they could handle! Great game! With Terry E now retired, the D at Winton Dr will now be under a microscope! Can't wait to get back to Memorial this fall! It's been too long!!
