CAL FOOTBALL 2021 RECRUITING CLASS

National Ranking by 247 Aggregated Ranking = 28th

Pac 12 Ranking by 247 Aggregated Ranking = 3rd

Phil Steele has rated 7 of the incoming Bears as Very Highly Touted (his highest ranking).  Interestingly, those rankings are not necessarily in line with the 247 aggregated ones.  In order:

Jermaine Terry - TE

J Michael Sturdivant - WR

Derek Wilkins - DE

Kai Milner - QB

Mavin Anderson - WR

Akili Calhoun - DE

Hunter Barth - Safety

The rest of the class was rated as Highly Touted save for Nate Rutchena and Lu-Magia Hearns

****’

While not as insightful as one might think (because not all offers stay actionable and some players eschew broad recruiting interest and narrow in quickly), it's always valuable to look at who the Bears beat out for their class.  These are in order from top to bottom by Bear Insider’s Ratings for each player:

J Michael Sturdivant‍ - (31 Offers) Stanford, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, UCLA, Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida State, Oklahoma State

Jermaine Terry‍ - (25 Offers)  Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA, Washington

Akili Calhoun‍   - (8 Offers) UCLA and Arizona State

Kaleb Elarms-Orr‍ - (17 Offers)  Arizona, Boise State, Colorado, Washington State

Mavin Anderson‍ - (11 Offers) Auburn, Oregon, Arizona State, Nebraska

Kai Millner‍ - (15 Offers) Miami, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa State, Arizona State

Kaleb Higgins‍  - (14 Offers) Arizona State, Baylor, Oregon, Texas A&M, USC and Washington

Bastian Swinney‍  - (15 offers) Iowa State, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma State, TCU

Moses Oladejo‍ - (17 Offers) Arizona, Colorado

Thank you for this detailed article on our very nice 2021 recruiting class. Now, we need to prove it on the field on Saturday afternoons.

Go Bears!

P.S. I expect the two WRs, the TE, two DEs and the JC DT to be significant contributors this year. The JC DT may be an unranked recruit, but, his level contribution will impact in winning a couple more games.

Far and away the most highly rated class in Wilcox's five years, especially on offense. The new offensive staff is having an impact. Next year's class too. This gives me hope. Go Bears!

I believe it is surprisingly rare that we beat Furd out for a recruit (Sturdivant and Wilkins). The tide is turning and I think we can expect the Axe to be spending a lot more time in Berkeley over the next several years! Go Bears!

Did we just grab another 2021 commit? 247 says he has an Oregon offer.

He appears to be a safety (out of Lakeland, FL) which would fill a need. Seems to have been little recruiting interest in him. Really late for a 2021 commitment. Perhaps a PWO?

Pictures of him have him wearing a jersey with "All America" printed on it. Could be from some football camp?

Champion will join the 2021 class as a Preferred Walk on playing the H Back position (FB/TE hybrid).

Thanks. Being from Mater Dei makes him much more interesting. I was reporting what they had at 247sports, which wasn't much. They had no high school listed for him. Our other investigative journalists did a better job than me.

little to be found about Darius Long

how much eligibility does he have

saw that he was class of 2017, so a bit older .. which could be good

further insight on this would be nice

If accurate his offer list is interesting: San Diego St. and Oregon.

All offer lists should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Many schools cast wide nets with no intention of boating all the fish that find themselves in the net.

Think of it as a math exercise. If you extend more than 25 offers, you can't possibly take every recruit who received one.

Offers are tiered. Some are strictly wishing and hoping, some you are willing to wait until signing day, some you are willing to wait until whether an official visit is scheduled, some you are covering your bases, etc. etc.

That is why you can't simply take it at face value that it is a big deal when Cal says they signed a kid who received a bunch of offers. OTOH, when a kid narrows down his offers to a few big name schools and chooses Cal, it is a big deal.

Good point. But there are many who don't get an offer at all.

He is on campus. Because by definition they do not sign a LOI or a scholarship agreement, walk-ons are still recruits and are recruitable until they are on campus and enrolled in Summer Bridge or classes. It is an NCAA violation for the coach/school to discuss recruits.

Yes. I believe MoragaBear once said that the staffs of most all the schools usually keep their PWO lists close to their vests for this reason. They can change their minds right up until the last minute and go somewhere else. Maybe a San Jose State even finds themselves with an open schollie and offers it to a Cac 12 PWO.

I've always wondered about this. If you offer a lot more than you have scholarships and you get a bunch of your third tier guys ("some you are covering your bases") accepting your offer, do you tell them we can't accept their commitment until we hear from the guys we are really after? How does that work?
