Bears Add Commitment From Mater Dei CB Cameron Sidney
The Bears picked up their 11th commitment of the 2022 class from 5-10/165 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) High School cornerback Cameron Sidney this morning.
A 2-year starter for the Monarchs, Sidney is the first defensive back commitment from Cal’s 2022 class so far.
“I was looking at a place I could call home,” said Sidney. “When I get there the second time, I could tell just from being around the people and on campus and the way people interacted with each other just gave me a sense that Cal was a place I’d like to be for the next four years. And having a good relationship with Coach Tre Watson before I visited Cal, that prior connection made the visit even better. And meeting Coach Wilcox and the staff was great. It helped majorly in my decision.
“Coach Tre told me he likes my high football IQ and instincts and that those things play a big role in the secondary at Cal.
“Cal’s academics played a big role in my decision, too. Honestly, I think Cal’s the best public education school out there and that played a big part in my parents and my love for the school. We got a tour of the academic center and we got to see how much they invest into the student’s education at Cal.”
Mater Dei head coach Bruce Rollinson has seen a ton of D1 talent come through his program in his over three decades of coaching. He certainly likes what he sees in his two year starter, Sidney.
“Cam Sidney is a young man that is blessed with extreme confidence, academic excellence, and he is also an outstanding football player,” said Rollinson. “He possesses tremendous leadership ability and work ethic. He can flat-out cover anybody and everybody. He’s not flashy he just gets the job done and allows us not to worry about his side of the defense. I’m very proud of what he is accomplished and I’m extremely proud that he’s committing to Cal Berkeley.”
The Bears will look to add five to six more pieces to their ‘22 class. Sidney is the sixth defensive commit, joining NT Damonic Williams, DEs Jaxson Moi and Nate Burrell, OLBs Curley Young and Nunie Tuitele. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bears have commits from QB Justyn Martin, RBs Jaydn Ott and Kaleb Johnson, OG Sioape Vatikani and WR Jaiven Plummer.
Sidney also holds offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Boise State and more. He’ll join Mater Dei teammate Champion Johnson an potentially receiver Nikko Remigio if he opts to return for a final season of eligibilty at Cal.
