BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball has opened the season 3-0 thanks to a physical 81-49 win over visiting Utah State on Tuesday night at Haas Pavilion. The Bears were led by junior forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt who had a career-night en route to her second double-double of the season.

Cal (3-0) did not have their best night shooting, connecting on 37 percent of their attempts from the field (27-for-73). However, the Bears were stellar from the line, making 21 of their 30 attempts from the charity stripe.

On the glass and in the paint is where the Golden Bears shined. Cal outrebounded Utah State 57-41, the 57 rebounds are the most by the Bears since they had 55 against UCLA on Feb. 9, 2020. Of their 57 rebounds, 23 came on the offensive end, which led to 23 second chance points.

Turnovers also played a big factor. Cal turned it over 16 times, but the Aggies could only convert that into 14 points. Utah State however, turned the ball over 23 times which led to 25 points for the Bears.

Lutje Schipholt was a force on the inside. She led all scorers with a career-high 23 points going 10-for-16 from the field. She also grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds and had a career-high five blocks. Joining Lutje Schipholt in double figures was freshman guard Jayda Curry with 18, followed by Dalayah Daniels with 11. Jadyn Bush had eight points and seven rebounds as well.

Utah State (2-1) was led by E'Lease Stafford who had 13 points, she was joined by Laci Hawthorne in double figures with 10. The Bears did a tremendous job defensively on the duo in the second half, holding Hawthorne scoreless and Stafford to just four points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies scored the game's first bucket on their opening possession, it was their only lead of the night. Cal took the lead for good when Lutje Schipholt was fouled in the paint, the traditional three-point play gave the Bears a 6-4 advantage and they never looked back.

A three from Curry saw the Bears push their lead to eight, up 15-7 with under 4:15 in the first quarter. Cal pushed that lead to 17 late in the second quarter thanks to an 8-0 run culminating by a fast break layup by Bush.
Cal went into the locker room leading 45-28. They continued to build their lead throughout the second half, leading by as much as 32 late in the fourth quarter.

NEXT UP
Cal returns to the road when they travel to La Jolla, Calif., to battle host UC San Diego on Saturday. Saturday's contest will tip off at 4:00 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
