Cal Basketball's Jaylon Tyson's Waiver Request Approved by NCAA
Jaylon Tyson, a key piece of Cal's 2023-24 roster will immediately be eligible to play after his transfer from Texas Tech, joining the team in Friday night's contest.
At issue was Tyson’s waiver request to be immediately eligible to play after his second transfer, having first transferred from Texas to Texas Tech.
“We are very thankful that the NCAA has approved Jaylon Tyson’s waiver for immediate eligibility. We are excited that he will be back on the court Friday night playing the game he loves.” Cal head coach Mark Madsen said this morning.
Tyson requested his waiver after being the victim of inappropriate verbal abuse from former Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams where he likened Tyson, who is African American to a slave and him as a master, who resigned after the incident.
Tyson immediately gives the Bears a big boost both both ends of the court as an elite defender and rebounder able to play several positions effectively and an immediate threat on the offensive end of the court. Reports from summer and fall practice had Tyson as a clear leader and energizer on the team who heavily impacted his team’s fortunes. As a sophomore at Texas Tech, Tyson averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting 40% from the perimeter.
