Bears Come Up Short Against Aztecs In Overtime

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO (AP) – The California men's basketball team used a stingy second-half defensive effort to force overtime before ultimately falling 76-67 to San Diego State in the SoCal Showcase on Saturday.

San Diego State made 9 of 10 free throws in overtime and Jaedon Ledee added a pair of jumpers to outscore Cal 13-4 in the extra period. The Golden Bears (2-5) were just 1-of-7 shooting from the floor in overtime.



Cal trailed by as many as 12 with 9:24 remaining in the contest but climbed back by holding San Diego State (5-1) without a field goal for the final 11:33 of regulation. Rodney Brown Jr. hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Fardaws Aimaq hit 3 of 4 from the line to tie the game with 1:42 left and force overtime.

Reese Waters hit 6 of 11 from the field, including 2 of 3 from long range, and was 10-for-10 from the line to lead the Aztecs with 24 points. Ledee added 19 points, going 7 of 10 from the line. The Aztecs collectively were 31 of 37 from the line (83.8%), compared to a 12-of-18 effort by the Bears.



Jaylon Tyson hit 9 of 21 from the field, to lead the Bears with 23 points – his fourth game with 20 or more – before fouling out of the game. Aimaq had his fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Grant Newell added 11 points and eight boards to round out Cal's three double-figure scorers.

Cal was without Devin Askew (foot) and Jalen Celestine (foot) for the fourth straight game, while Keonte Kennedy (hand) remained inactive to start the season.
 
The Bears return to Berkeley to host Santa Clara on Saturday, Dec. 2. Tipoff from Haas Pavilion is at 4 p.m. PST on the Pac-12 Network.

Late period fades will probably keep happening until more of the roster returns from injury.

Agreed. I like a lot of what I see Maddog and this team doing. But until he has most/all of his players, we can't judge the current w/l as the finished product.

The point guard is the biggest issue. I think that the NBA - because of the raw skills of the 2-5 and the ability of SO many current big men in the NBA to go outside minimizes the importance of the PG. I mean a great one can make it work better but isn' a requirement.

But the difference in the SDSU game was their grad transfer from USC who played most of the minutes at point. It wasn't even that he got THAT many assists but that he took control of the team on the floor and really allowed them to run their offense.

And BTW - both my brother (Long Time Cal Fan) and I thought that SDSU probably got mostly in trouble because of a strange subsitution pattern at the end when they pulled out one of their threes and then put a guy in who wasn't as skilled. No program sold so not sure about names/numbers but a key part of the SDSU offensive rotation was on the bench when the Bears clawed back to tie it.

And BTW #2. Cone has GOT to learn to play in the offense. Grant actually had a nice game and seemed to be playing both with confidence and letting the game come to him. Cone as a grad transfer really needs to recognize that and feed Grant the rock. But BTW #3(and reminding ourselves these are, in the end, kids), Cone aslo posted on social media that his family was in attendance, it looked like he had a great thanksgiving and he probably was putting up shots becuase he felt he could make them and his family was there (they hadn't been able to see him according to his posts for much of his college career).
